Okay, I'm reformatting the entire thread!
I'm putting all the pictures up in the first post, just like the other guys' threads.
The newest will be closer to the bottom!

Check out my Deviantart! (http://volcompat321.deviantart.com/)

Any second now, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles burst out of that sewer manhole cover.

Volcompat321
Feb 1, 2010, 04:57 AM
Only if I could draw that!
I would.
Or I might draw Ernie Reyes Jr delivering a pizza!

Mike
Feb 1, 2010, 05:31 AM
Heros in a half shell.

I could definetly see a turtle peaking out of the manhole. You wouldn't even need to draw a full turtle, just the top of the head and mask.

Volcompat321
Feb 1, 2010, 05:43 AM
Hmm, I'm gonna try that!
I can erase the manhole(wannabee), and put a huge green head with a mask and some white eyes. :p

It might be easier to do this with Photoshop though.
First try, DSi!

EDIT: The finished product!
I finished it on the DSi.
I had to look up some pics of Ninja Turtles too see how the head was shaped. lol

Also, an unfinished drawing.
I went to this website (http://www.how-to-draw-cartoons-online.com/) that gives you the basic shapes for drawing certain things, and one was a "cartoon dragon".
So I decided to give it a try.
The result-
(I still have to do the background, any ideas? (keep it simple, I'm still learning)).

Just do it a lot (preferably every day if you want some progress), and you'll get better. It all depends on how much you really wanna get good at drawing.

Volcompat321
Feb 1, 2010, 07:23 PM
I'll definitely be doing this everyday!
I'm trying my best to learn, and up until now, it's been really hard for me to even do the dragon thing.

I never knew about the shapes thing, because I've never seen it before.
Though it sure does make things a lot easier.
I just wish the program I'm using on the DSi had a layers option. :/

Hell yes.
I just typed in "How to draw", and that came up. :p

Volcompat321
Feb 2, 2010, 11:05 AM
Alright, I drew this one with pencil and some weird almost see through paper.
It's called "Rag Vellum".
My brother in law gave it to me a while back when he dropped out of school for Architectures.

Anyway, I drew the outlines on the sheet below, traced the parts I needed(from the sheet below), and with a lot of help from a picture I took in PSU, here's the outcome!

Sorry for the horrible quality of the picture, I don't own a scanner, or a better camera. (This was taken with the DSi camera...so yea.
Here it is!
[SPOILER-BOX]http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk115/Volcompat321/90107fc3.jpg[/SPOILER-BOX]

I already know I need to work on the legs, and hands, and definitely the face and chest area.
Seems one leg is fatter than the other, and the hands are very low detail, and don't make sense. lol. :p
I tried! :D
Took me about 2 and a half hours.

Well, doesn't look bad at all.

I dunno about the "How to draw" things though. I don't like most of them, since they just teach how to apply tricks. There are no shortcuts to learning how to draw. Try to draw pictures of real humans, you'll learn the most by doing just that. Don't expect it to look any good the first few tries. It's important you start to understand what you draw, instead of just making lines, just because the tutorial told you so..

Yea, I stopped using the How to draw thing.
I didn't like how they jumped from the basic stuff, to BAM! ART!

I've been working on drawing the CAST picture on the DSi using Colors!
It's coming out pretty decent so far.
If I can figure out how to upload the part of me drawing it, I'll post it here.
If I cant figure that out, I'll just post the link where it shows my picture being drawn, but at a higher speed.
(which is a neat little Colors! thing. I like it!)

I also figured out it's a lot easier to draw on paper than it is to draw with the Wacom and DS.

I definitely need to work on shading, and how to make things pop out.
I'm teaching myself, and along with my uncreative mind, it's so hard for me.
I took some advice though, I keep drawing, almost to where the point my hand hurts like a betch. But I love it!

I'll post the picture/Colors! link of me drawing the Cast when I'm done.
I'm coloring her in still.

I've had the not being creative/don't know what to draw thing as well.

That itself is just a stupid reason people always use to not start with drawing. Just put yourself over it. The more you draw, the more ideas for drawings you get. Create an account on DeviantArt and CGhub and start skimming around, watching others art, post some of yourself. Thats an easy way to excite yourself to draw more and better.

If you don't mind I will make an art request for you. That should keep you busy

Volcompat321
Feb 2, 2010, 01:31 PM
I don't know what CGhub is, but I can Google it. :p
I've seen other forum members DeviantArt up, but never actually been to the site.

Make the request!!! :D
I'm excited about it!

But, are you going to give me something to reference, or do I have to just draw what you request?
Cause I'm not good with poses, at all.
I'll try my best though.
I read something somewhere where it said, "never underestimate your drawing"...."no matter how crappy it is.".
So I'm trying to stick with that idea. lol.

Anyway, please do request something!

I can start taking some requests.
Like qoxolog said, it'll definitely keep me busy.
Though I cant say for certain it will be good. :o

Like I said, I'm still learning! :D

I'll be drawing on paper though, because it's soooo much easier to draw on the paper than the DSi.
I'm getting excited now, I'm on my way to becoming an artist! : jkjk, not yet.

CGhub.com. There is also a link to it in my sig. CGhub is like DeviantArt, but then without the retards and furry lovers. Most people on CGhub are proffesional artists. so don't get intimidated when you visit that site.

Just give me some time. I'll provide you with some screens and a reference pose you can use. I'll make a request of Qox (my PSO FOnewearl). You can base her appearnce either based on screenshot or my own art of her.

Great to see someone so excited about getting into art. Keep it up and you'll make mindblowing progress. :)

I haven't checked out CGhub before, but for learning the ropes I'd definitely suggest looking at conceptart.org's (http://conceptart.org/) forums. It's pretty beginner-friendly, and if you use the search function there's a lot of beginner questions that've been addressed. And there's this guy (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870) ...

I read something somewhere where it said, "never underestimate your drawing"...."no matter how crappy it is.".That's one of the most important things to remember about art. Never convince yourself not to draw something that you want to draw because you "can't" or "it'll look bad." Drawing is learning, and you can't learn how to do something new without trying it out.

The most important: Always always always have fun. It's the best way to really learn something. If you don't like what you're doing, scrap it. Burn it. Fold it into a paper crane. Draw zebras all over it. Or Ninja Turtles, for that matter. Scribble like you've lost your mind. It doesn't matter what you do; as long as you keep drawing new stuff, you'll keep learning new stuff.

Like I hate it when you have some super awesome drawing/sketch in your mind, but when you try to put it on paper... fAiL DXTruth is, when that happens, you don't actually have a great drawing in your mind. You know who or what you want to draw, you know the general feeling you want it to have, the basic pose, perspective -- that's all concept. Actually getting it on paper depends upon how much practice you've had with what you're trying to draw.

You can have a pretty awesome idea for a cat in your head, but if you've never drawn a cat before, it'll look pretty goofy. It's the same thing with anatomy, new poses, stuff like that. If it isn't coming out how you want it, compare the idea in your mind to the result on paper, then see what makes it feel off to you. Practice in that area. If you can't figure out what's making it look strange, ask someone else; it's what critiques are for.

(Sorry, didn't mean to ramble and get so off-topic :( )

I'll check out those websites!
These past few days, I've been trying to draw some awesome things.
And like you said, it's hard to get it on paper.
I know where I have to practice, and what needs work on, so I'm drawing them over and over.
I definitely need work on the head shapes, and angles. Mouths, EYES, and noses.
I have the ears down pretty well, so I'm happy at least something is done! :D
What I'm doing to get ideas, is sticking to PSU.
The first drawing, was of my CAST Enzylon-2 (which I'm almost done coloring on the DS!)
I'm going to draw my Newman, and other CAST as well, and then the picture qoxlog is going to give me to draw.

I'm super excited, because it's something HARD to do, and I'm not progressing too slowly.

Hm. Like many others have said, the best thing to do is practice.
The best to do, is real life studies. Draw stuff you see laying around. Google human anatomy and draw some of the figures that poop up. Especially draw and study the ones without skin, only showing the muscels. Understand how muscles work and how the connect is very important in understanding anatomy.
When you get better at anatomy, and understand how it works, it's no problem to create extreme features, like very long legs, very bend arms, sharp muscles etc. and don't make it look broke or akward.
Also, when looking at your surroundings, pay attention to the shadows, the things create and on the items themselves.
I always find it very interesting to see the lights and shadows on my hand when I sit infront of the PC.

I also would give the advice of trying different techiques. Like using pencil, markers, ballpoint pens. All work differently and have different effects and styles.

Hope that in someway helps you out :3

I never thought about trying to draw or sketch the muscles to see how they work.
Hopefully I can do that, because that just sounds like tons of fun!
:D:D
I have been trying to work on shading a lot, even if it's just drawing a square, and figuring out where the lighting is coming from.
I have done this with pretty much every basic shape, and I've been trying to do this with different lighting angles.
:D:D
Thanks much, there's always something else to learn, and I love it!

Ok Qoxolg. How exactly do you pronounce your character's name?

qoxolg
Feb 6, 2010, 04:20 AM
@Zeek:

Dunno.. something like "kok-solg" where both "o" sound like the "o" in the word "collection". Unfortunally you can't pronounce the "g" the way I do, cause I assume you ain't dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_phonology). The dutch " g" has a very nasty sound actually, which you only hear in some arrabic languages, other then dutch.

qoxolg was the original name to get my HUne on BB a Skyly ID. I just tried random, non excisting, names untill I go the ID

All my other characters always start with "qox" and then something (or nothing) behind it.

Alright, I think I'm pretty happy about the lines.
I've been trying to do them over on Photoshop, and it's VERY hard doing it with a mouse.
I'm going to have to use a scanner somewhere.
Even then, the coloring is going to be super hard.

I'm going to keep trying though.

qoxolg
Feb 8, 2010, 05:39 PM
great!.. if you line with the mouse.. try to use different tools.. another trick is scanning in illustrator, and then let illustrator interpolate the lines by placing the scan, and then play with the trace tool.

That was done on the DSi!

Instead of a scanner, save your money for a tablet (preferably a wacom one). Seeing how well you do on your DSi, a tablet is the way to go for you!

Tablets take some time to get used to though..

Volcompat321
Feb 9, 2010, 08:10 AM
I've actually used a tablet, and it was a Cintiq!
That thing was like heaven in my hands.

Though, they cost a lot of money....like a lot, a lot.
I was looking into getting one a while back, but then backed out because I quit my job. (stupid me).

That's a good idea though.
I'd really like the ones that have a screen on it, those seem to be a lot easier to handle than the ones with just the pad on it.

Feb 9, 2010, 08:35 AM
Hehe.. I've been thinking of getting a cintiq, though an intuos was a great investment. I think that since I've got my tablet I've been improving like hell. I have enough money for a cintiq, it's just that I still love my good old intuos.

Hehe.. I've been thinking of getting a cintiq, though an intuos was a great investment. I think that since I've got my tablet I've been improving like hell. I have enough money for a cintiq, it's just that I still love my good old intuos.

Haha time to move on! :P
And then sell me the intuos!.

I wish I could afford either one of those right now. I'm sure it would help improve my art.
I'm just loving that I can do this, and stuff comes out decent, and some people like the stuff I do.
I know I have tons and tons to learn still, and it's so much fun.

The earth and the feather painting are really great. Especially considering you`re on the ds. The only thing i`ve managed to get to look decent with colors is my cartoon link practice that took me forever.

I like digital art, especially since it allows you completely redo everything, and you can save a lot of money on paint. You might think about springing for a tablet laptop if you get the chance. Having the right tools would probably help.

Anyway, I use a Bamboo Fun for my digital work. Nice tablet for the price I paid for. Though it does take some time to not look at the work surface. I could have gotten an Intuos. But I didn't want to go overboard with my first tablet. I may get one in the future.

Illustrator is Adobe's Vector Fancy program, Its the common choice for performing images with vectors verses using pixels. Its also the program used for designing posters, books and what ahve you since everything can be resized without worries of pixelation (since its all vectors and flatlines)

EX: http://saltshaker911.deviantart.com/art/VECTOR-38238670 this is vector based artwork (it wasn't made in Illustrator but the effect is still the same)

I'm sure I shouldn't get a super expensive tablet for my first one, so any tablet without a screen should do.

I really hope it's easy to get used to, because I think it would be weird to try and draw and look at the screen above/in front of me.

I really want the Cintiq12x thing, but that looks out of reach for a very, very long time.

I'll try to do the illustrator tutorial when I come home from work (8,5 Hours from now that is)

They are a bit on the expensive side, but by the sound of it, they are very well worth the price tag.

Illustrator:
Getting clean lines without a tablet:

• Greate a new file in illustrator with a pretty large size.. something like 3000x4000px.
• Now do: File>Place>choose the scanned drawing. IT works best if your drawing is not to high resolution. Mine is 700x813px in this picture (5 times smaller in each dimension).
• Now you see the picture in the canvas. Hold donw SHIFT and start streching it to the edges of the canvas.
• Now make sure the placed picture is still selected:
in the menu do: Object>Life Trace>Tracing options...
• Make sure you check the " preview" box, and start playing with the values untill you think it looks good.

result:
[spoiler-box]
original sketch:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok83sketch.jpg

Traced:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok83illus.jpg
[/spoiler-box]

Now of course my example doesn't look perfect, because the sketch was very sloppy. With penciled outlines, the trace should come out fine.

From illustrator you can export it as a PNG, and then open it in photoshop.

have fun!

I know you are "buying" Illustrator. But might I suggest Paint Tool SAI as well. For me, I'm not Adobe-smart. No really, I can't work photoshop for me. So I came across SAI one day and fell in love with it. Though not as advanced as Photoshop, it's lightweight and gets the job done for me. Plus I love their linearting. Just click on the paper with pen at the layers section and then draw like normal.

Oh god, I sound like a salesperson >_> Don't mind my crappy art in the screenies....or the 1024x768 res D: I just like suggesting it to everyone who wants my opinion on programs to use.

I just want to avoid lines with the mouse.
Coloring is different, I don't exactly have to be neat with that.
When I try drawing with the mouse in almost any program, it seems like I can only move on a + like axis.

Hard to explain, but here goes.

It seems as if I can only make squared off shapes, and not draw what I actually want.

Alledgedly, the rule of thumb is,
if you're a student, its OK to do ... that.

When you're a student, you can grab a student licence for 1/10 the orginal price.

I still have my student licence from the CS3 suite.

For CS5 I'll probably only buy Photoshop, since this time I have to pay full price, and I don't think the other adobe programms or worth that much to me.

In the professional art business people mostly use Photoshop or Painter. Other programms are hardly used.

Oh, it kinda is. But some of that stuff is what I added for my sake. You can pick and choose what you want. The only problem is that since it's not so widely supported, what brushes you have there is what you get. I was able to find one set of brushes, but then again, I don't even use them that much. But I do love that I can make my own palette. And that it isn't a memory hog like PS (for my computer at least)

And SAI's less than $70....so yeah.....

I'm more of a hobbyist for drawing so SAI works for me. But you want to have a career in it, then you should get PS to familiarize yourself with it.

This doesn't look too bad for my first tablet. So far, I'm quite happy with the quality of this, being a secondhand one and all.

Hopefully I will learn how to use it fairly quickly.
The lady said she doesn't have the disc but she gave me the Wacom Website where you can download drivers.
She said it didn't come with extra pen tips. :o
But as long as the one on it is fine, whatever. -
Only problem I see now, is it's too small, but that's okay too. It's affordable, and close.

Wow that nice

For a Zune I never used equal to about $50(what the lady wanted for the tablet to begin with).

I'd say it's damn nice for that price. I'm excited, I want to start using it!

If AOL didn't have a stupid log-in problem earlier, I could have gotten it tonight.
Stupid AOL.com.

Here in the Netherlands it's quit common to go to someone elses house when you buy stuff 2nd hand. (well, within 2,5 hours I can get to pretty much every corner of the country  guess thats a little different in the US).

I've bought my 2nd hand Sega Saturn like that.

I missed a lot not being here. Congrats on the tablet. I have the same brand. Just white and bigger. I think you'll enjoy using it. If you ever need to buy some tips it's like 5-6 dollars for a pack on Wacom's website. But the nibs should last for a while. I'm still using my nib that was already in the pen. And I've had it for about 5 months now. So you shouldn't worry about that for a bit.

I just never bought anything second hand, and went to the house to get it.
I have met people somewhere before.
Just thought it was unusual for a woman to invite me to here house.
If I was a woman, and saw me, I'd be quite scared. :o (lol)

Well, that's good to know.
I don't have to worry about tips for a while.

I've been reading up on the tablet though, and it seems hard to configure. :o
It'll obviously be easier to tell once I have it and installed, but...do you know if the drivers comes with some type of tutorial on how to set it up?

Like the eraser part used as an eraser. That's awesome! lol
I'll Youtube/google it if I have to, so no big deal.

I thought it was pretty easy.. just download the driver from Wacoms website, and configure the tablet to your liking. The default settings are in most cases good, and changing some settings won't do much good.

Things that I changed in the settings:
I mapped my tablet to my screen, which means the corner of my tablet makes my mouse go to the corner of my screen. This will give a better "paper-like" feel, though I dunno if it also works well with smaller tablets.

Other then that I've set the two buttons on the pen on "Shift" and CTRL+Z

I never use the eraser on the back of the pen. Once you learn to use the quick keys in photoshop, it will be faster to click on the E button for Eraser and the B button for Brush.

Oh okay. :D
I'll see if that more paper setting works good on this one. I would think it's too small to do that though. No harm in trying!
I definitely have to get used to the quick buttons on PS. I haven't seriously used Photoshop for much, so I haven't learned "how to" Photoshop yet.
I do have a question though... how does the pen know you're trying to make it work?
Like...how does it know to use the ink or not, if yo have your buttons to shift and ctrl+Z?
Is it automatic?

qoxolg
Feb 27, 2010, 10:09 AM
The tablet knows were the pen is, when it's up to 1,5cm above the tablet surface. It will ink when you touch the tablet surface and the harder you press the bigger your brush gets in photoshop, which is very important when lining and coloring.

the buttons are just quick keys for stuff you use a lot. I use Shift to make multi-selections in photoshop and to draw straight lines. CTRL+Z should be obvious

I'll definitely be using your tutorial on how to color and whatnot.

I need to learn how to do backgrounds.

Well, while taking a break from your request qoxolg, I decided to make a wallpaper for myself!
Here's the start of it.

It's going to be this background, with a bunch of tiny Monster Hunter Kut Kuu's jumping around chasing a Hunter!

I need to make it higher quality, but it just wont seem to get better. :/
Anyway here's the background so far, not finished.

[SPOILER-BOX]http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk115/Volcompat321/2b979c51.png[/SPOILER-BOX]

The two dark green lines are indicating where to start and finish the monsters. The lines wont be there in the finished product.
I'll also be toning down the color a bit. Seems a bit too bright for my likes.
I'll be adding more detail to the grass as well.

Hey hey! j/k.. You don't have to perfect it. Making mistakes is not a bad thing as long as it is allowed, and in this case I never asked for perfection, so just do your stuff, show it, get feedback, etc.

I see this alot @ work as well. People taking weeks to create a plan/document/report which could be made in a few days. Problem is they are affraid of making mistakes and eventually the thing is done way to late, deadlines are missed, or the plan/document/whatever isn't even relevant anymore.

How I like to work: Create, ask feedback, fix, done

Getting art done quickly is imo way more satisfying, then taking multiple days or weeks to finish something.

Do what you did with the painting of that album. Just do it like that, and it will be ok.

Okay then. I'll finish it faster, and ask for feedback/help!
I just have to compensate my lack of skill with time. :p

That is something to think about though.
Plus, the sooner I'm done with one thing, I can move onto the next!
I'm still getting used to the tablet with fine lines, which is mainly halting me.

qoxolg
Mar 10, 2010, 12:11 PM
Thats exactly it! Just finish stuff, understand your mistakes, learn and move on.

Making good lines is easy: Work on 200% zoom and a 20px brush (with dynamic brushsize) for perfect lines. These days I use 100% zoom and a 15px brush when I am lazy, since it will quicken the lining exponentially.

If the lines get to fat, higher the resolution.

Hey, for anyone using SAI, how do I get the picture to let me color under it? :o

I don't want to mess up the lines, and when I close it, I cant just start with a new layer underneath.

:(
And sometimes SAI wont let me change anything when it's been sitting up for a while.
I think that might be my computers error though.

Make a new layer and set that new layer to multiply. You can use that to color. I personally make a layer set (the folder icon on the layers list) for different parts (like one for the skin, on for eyes, ect. ).

To save your layer information just save it as .sai file. It's like photoshop's .psd format. I don't know about yours but mines can open and save .psd files as well >.>

Using Photoshop will solve your problem

I can't imagine you can't run photoshop on your machine. I've been running photoshop on a machine with a 1Ghz proc and 256MB when I started (well that was Photoshop 6), but still, you can always try to lower the resolution of your picture. If you still get alot of crashes, maybe your tablet driver is broken.

Also, try to keep the amount of layers to a minimum. A lot of people that are new to digital coloring seem to stack tons of layers without much of reason. More layers != better picture. I've been cutting down the amount of layers I use drasticly lately, making the whole coloring proces faster and less straining for your computer.

It's not the tablet that's the problem, it's the computer itself.
My computer cant even run more than 5 pages of any type of web browser.
It's dying every day.

I expected for it to die months ago, but it just wont give up.
I'll be getting a new computer soon enough, so I just need to make it last.

My laptop truly is a sad story.

As for the layers, I don't use many, but I would like to close and open when I can, or in case my laptop shuts down, I can re-open it.

The saving as the sai should help that though!
