Why is there an option to play alone on Wi-Fi?

Well, basically, it's a way to play alone if you're waiting for your friends to go online.
There will be a notification that will let you know who just went into Wi-fi, that is, while you're actually playing alone.

WiFi has better drop rates.

If you don't want to play Free Play and no friends are on, might as well do solo play, so you can watch for friends coming online, while you have the better drop rates than playing normal story mode.

I am not sure but there might be some different missions online.

I'd do it just for the drop rates, but being able to see when people come online is a bonus.
