The animation is maddeningly slow.

I prefer shogi over chess though, not because loljapaneseisbetter, but I like the idea of getting to use the pieces you capture from your opponent against them (to say nothing of the whole promotion gimmick), it's more fun. Unfortunately, it's harder to find a set (especially if you want a less traditional one so that you can actually read the piece names) and even more so to find anyone that actually knows how to play.

My biggest complaint about chess is that figures look incredibly...impersonal. Leading minions that at least have semblance of being from flesh and blood has that charm.

That said, I did see chess sets with alternate figure designs where I live. I've also seen one that was made of Garnet (which is Czech specialty) and one that I;m pretty sure was made of gold and marble. All hideously expensive.

Off note, It would be awesome to get my hands on Gundam-like strategy

Because dropping colonies and doing dramatic finger pointing to fire main guns is way better than chess. Especially if done with mechs and battlecrusiers.
