An itch to draw!

Recently I started playing PSU again. With it came a desire to build stories around my characters. Sadly, I'm a terrible writer. Instead I began what could be a series of sketches, but it'll most likely be just this one.

I'm quite proud of this, since I haven't drawn anything in a long time. I KNOW it has a bunch of flaws though, so before I put anymore detail in I decided to take it to the experts. (You guys! )

[spoiler-box]http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz358/RYstyles/Drawings/Nudrop03.jpg[/spoiler-box]

This is Nudrop, my newman. She began as the assistant of a RELICs archaeologist, never considering working for the GUARDIANs due to her strange lack of talent with Technics.

During the first Unification Point, Nudrop disappeared in the bowels of a RELICs site. Despite days of searching nothing could be found explaining what had happened.

Several weeks later a team of GUARDIANs on a purification campaign came across the newman girl passed out yet unharmed. In her possession were items alien to Gurhal but curiously still ran on photon energy.

When she came to, the GUARDIANs claim she began babbling nonsense about creatures that don't exist, ruins of a space ship, and the "Red Captive Child". Baffling her doctors even more was her physical condition. Not only was she unharmed, she suddenly possessed strength, speed, stamina and agility rivaling that of a Beast's.

Nudrop soon joined the GUARDIANs and put her new set of skills to work. Those that have fought along side her claim that she seems to stare off beyond Gurhal and into another world.

Nice story. :)

As for the sketch - you would do well looking at more references and study the human body. That means, drawing a lot of them. You can use an image search engine to find the pose you want (just leave safe mode on).

Here's what I found using "woman standing front hands head":
Upper body (http://cache3.asset-cache.net/xc/83108816.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=D4DA32DF5F8999C3F7B52C66333D5275DD3EE21D69CB10C1 8A9438A99EBE9468E30A760B0D811297)
Full body, relaxed stance (http://www.worldofstock.com/slides/PAD5640.jpg) Full body, arms out (http://cache3.asset-cache.net/xc/56377598.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=51100C4ED77196F372F752CD857D0F896A0999426D2F5336 BAF38A2764F7354A)
(mid search Googles interface changed X_X)

I'd also say loose the pidgeon toes. You try standing like that ;).

Anyway, practise makes perfect. You're off to a good start.

Agreed. Doing it freehand with no refs was hard.

You links won't work for me though

Really? I usually see that kinda pose everywhere. It is kinda hard to stand that but I wasn't going for natural standing position, more like a sexy strike-a-pose.

I'll keep that in mind though, thanks for the C&C. :)

Ah, sorry about the links. I'll attach two of them (as fate would have it, I can't find the exact same ones now).

Pidgeon toes: I'm aware they appear a lot in japanese manga drawings. But especially with the feet close together, it doesn't make for a strong stance. To me it also looks very juvenile (which may be the intention originally).

Edit: For freehanding, you can use guidelines and sketch a skeleton first (a better stick figure as it were).
http://drawinglab.evansville.edu/ might be a good starting place. Also, doing gesture drawings helps.

Those refs aren't too bad, I'll have to save them! :)

Looking at the hands-over-head one, my original idea(that pose) doesn't feel so odd afterall. When I began this sketch it was going to be more like that, but I switched to a "hands clasped together, behind the head" pose.

As for the pidgeon toes, I suppose I could give the standard stance a shot. The sketch does kinda make it look like Nudrop has to use the potty.

I love doing the skeleton part, that's how I managed to not totally screw up on proportions!

Double post.

I made changes to the drawing. Decided to go with the standard stance, looks much better.

I don't think I'll be doing anything more though, my heavy-handed erasing has started to wear on the paper. Some slight fraying by the knees but I'm not too worried. I definately need more practice. I had so much trouble with the silly leg guards.

I'll try to work out the kinks before I begin coloring.

giggles..

Anyway I'll leave the feedback to the experts here.. I am not good at that kind of stuff.

Alrighty, my morning was free so I got alot done. Didn't fix the legs like I said I would, since I was afraid to ruin the paper any further.

My medium was colored pencils. I used a blending stick for the skin, hair, and red and grey parts of clothing. I would have used it on the black too but somehow the broad tip of the blender has gone missing, leaving me with the fine point tip.

I need to buy more of these things. While going over the boots I smudged a little red in there from the trim. That's no good!

Dont be afraid to manually blend colors together by strokes over the other colors' it'll have a less machine type apperance to it.

Cool :)

A tip in general, if you will: don't be afraid to start over, on a new page. Keep it up!

Haha, I suppose I'll have to get over my obsession with cleanliness. Point taken about the machine look.
