Hello>
Everyone!

Welcome to my gallery full of nonsense, weird art, and sometimes something Phantasy Star related.. As you can see this is my second third fourth gallery thread already (thanks to some topic title edit bug), my first one can be found right here (http://pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137076). my second thread can be found here: http://pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144098 and the third can be found here: http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167127

So.. What can you find in here:
Part 1: Rules for requests
Part 2: Latest art
Part 3: 4 recent art pieces
Part 4: Art PSO related
Part 5: Art PSU related
Part 6: Art PSZ related
Part 7: Tutorials
Part 8: Other random stuff

You can find all of my non PS related old stuff, by clicking on one of Qox' boobs in my sig..

-------------------------------= Part 1: Rules for requests =-------------------------------
You can request ANYTHING! be it PSO/PSU related.. something creepy? some other games/anime/human you want me to draw for you? I accept pretty much everything..

Basic Rules
• Try to keep your request within the rules of this board. I don't really care about drawings mature stuff, but others here might.
• Make a detailed discription, with preferably as much reference as possible. If you don't, I will make weird poop-art.
• You can pick any style you wan't. Just name the drawing out my gallery with the style you like, and I'll do it.

Current request list:
• None

-------------------------------= Part .0: Project Comiq =-------------------------------
This is a little project I am working on for about 2-3 months. At first I wasn't planning to share stuff, to prevent interference, but I guess most guys and gals here already found my stuff on my DA, so I figured I could add it here as well. 99% of the stuff I draw for this project is not and will never get colored (by me that is). You can find the group on DA here: http://project-comiq.deviantart.com/

Remember: You can't join as a member (you can watch if yo want to). I am the one who invites people, when I think you can be helpfull.

I won't share story related stuff here. Just the art.

Creepshading videotutorial (covers most of the basics of my coloring):

Little F*cking Mermaid Layering:
[spoiler-box]
Little fucking mermaid ripped apart:

First the sketch:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t0.jpg

Next I did some flats and erased the sketch:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t1.jpg

Next I did some shading in a "Linear Burn" layer:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t2.jpg

and more detailed shading in a "Linear Burn" layer on top of it:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t3.jpg

Next I did some soft dark shading in a normal layer that is underneat the Linear Burn layers:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t4.jpg

Next I gave the skin some color by using a red brush in a normal layer that is underneat the dark shading layer:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t5.jpg

Next I added some specular lighting in a "Color Dodge" layer (Dodge does the opposite of Burn):
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t6.jpg

Next I added some gloss in a normal layer (I hope the PNG file works):
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t7.png

Next I added blood. The blood layer is underneat the shading layers and above the skin color layer:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t8.jpg

Next I added some dark and heavy shading by using a grey/blue/purple brush in a normal layer that is on top of the other layers:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t9.jpg

Next I did some flats for the background:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t10.jpg

Next some shading in a Linear Burn layer:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t11.jpg

and some more softshading on top of it, in a normal layer using dark brushes:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t12.jpg

I added some blood to the BG, this layer is underneat the shading layers:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t13.jpg

I did some specular lighting using a "Color Dodge" layer:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t14.jpg

I did even more dark shading in a normal layer on top of the others:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t15.jpg

I added some glow in just a normal layer:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t16.jpg

and finaly I always do some color corrections using a Brightness/Contrast layer, there are two versions: One with high brightness and contrast and one with low brightness. note: The Birghtness/Contrast I use is new in Photoshop CS3, so if you have an older Photoshop version you have to use different tools:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok9t17.jpg

...just http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif
[/spoiler-box]

Nerdlove layering:
[spoiler-box]
When you use Linear Burn layers it's easy to make shades by only using all sorts of grays.
Lets rip nerdlove appart:

Here we have the line work:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t1a.jpg

next I filled it up with some flats:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t2a.jpg

next I made the cell shade in a "Linear Burn" layer.. as you can see I only used some gray tones.
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t3a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t3b.jpg

next I added some color to the flats, the "Linear burn" layer is still on top of this one:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t4a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t4b.jpg

next I added more reddish to the skin and a very soft grey/purple tone to the rest:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t5a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t5b.jpg

next I added some blush to the cheeks of the nerds and some darker shadows to the background:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t6a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t6b.jpg

next I added the shadow that is casted by the objects:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t7a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t7b.jpg

I added some bricks to make the background less empty:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t8a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t8b.jpg

and I added some glow to the harts:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t9a.jpg http://jojo.sappusx.com/ok22t9b.jpg

Yeah I still work on it. I still got two requests running, though it's a little hot here the past few weeks, which makes me not wanna sit inside my room with my sweaty arm sticking on my tablet.

You can still drop new requests if you feel like.

Doesn't he get those perfect lines with Illustrator? :P
Even if he did, they're still amazing to look at, and I love this new one, for Sayara!

I'm still astonished at how awesome Sieno came out!

Keep up the good work! P.S. I'm working on Q now for you, even though it's been like 9384938 months since you requested her! lol

Also, I think that's the bottom lip, isn't it, Mimo?

qoxolg
Jul 26, 2010, 04:12 PM
@Sayara:
Kay, will try try to keep the skin light while shading.

@Mims:
Perfect? not nearly! this is one of my poorest jobs when it comes to lining. I think the brush was a little to small for this resolution.. I used 50% zoom for most part of the clothes, but it came out alright after tweaking the brush settings in Photoshop which gives more precision and better interpolation to your brushstroke, though it will really kill your computer when using it while coloring

Other then that: Lining is simply getting the flow and getting the flow in one smooth movement of your hand..

And no.. she doesn't stick her tongue.. it's the inner lines of her mouth/lips. I never really like to draw the lower and upper lines of the lip, it makes the look fat. Lips are just an extension of your skin with a slighty different color, thus no lines should be above or underneath. yush!

you can see it in the original sketch that it's her lips:

@Volcom:
No no, not illustrator, the main con about letting Illustrator generate your lines, is that it can sometimes change the look of your drawing completly, and it will make some errors at parts where it crosses other lines. Illustrator lines are very recognizable.

Great to hear your working on her.. your new computer handling it fine?

Ooooh, I thought you used Illustrator!
Hehe

Yea, I've been having fun trying to get her where I wanted her (lol) again, but this time my computer isn't shutting off on me! HAHA!

The new computer can finally run Photoshop, and wont lag (even with ridiculously large pictures!), so I'm having fun making a lot of different things, and entering some contests on DA. Mainly for fun though with that.

@Volcompat321: Gib Illustrator? XD

@Q: That's insane, my hands are always shaking during the outlining step of my work. Which is why most of the times I don't bother to clean it up.. but you do a good job of it, keep it up and improve! (I not mean this in a bad way n.n)

@Sayara: I see, it is nice to see someone incorporating his style within their own. Looks really neat. : D

@mims:
It's not very insane (Well, I am insane because I am doing it). My hands shake like hell aswell  my handwriting is also not the best in the world

Clean lines are a bit overrated though. For 90% it's a waste of time for a good artist. I am not really much of a great artist myself, so I try my best to put alot of time in perfecting everything that doesn't require much skill. I simply compensate my lack of talent with techniques and tricks

I don't think your art needs clean lines. Your current way of lining matches good with your coloring.

You just inspired me to try out some watercolor pencils whenever I have funds to do so. I saw them one day and passed them up since I've never seen anyone use them before.

@Ami:
I did it because I wanted to do it myself. I had this planned after finishing Sayara's request past weekend, but stuff came up so I didn't finish it  I had this nice idea, and it came out close to how I imagined it, so I'm happy I made it.

Potential cover chapter 1 comiq
In the first place I was planning to use the tutorial pic for the cover of my first comiq chapter... BUT.. today I fixed my tablet somehow, so it now works with properly again (well, missing the lower part of it now).

First I started sketching to try it out, then I thought: Hey, looks pretty good, lets line it.. then I thought: NEH! don't feel like lining, so I started graying it.. and ended up look this:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/coverps.jpg
facials:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/coverpd.jpg

Actually, I like this one more then the tutorial picture. So I am gonna do a background for this one I guess.

By the way: This is the first time I've colored something with 16-bit. It really seemed to have paid off, since there is close to no banding :) Though I warn you: Only use 16-bit if you have a powerful computer!

qoxolg

@Volcom: Thanks! No line rocks! I think I've finally perfected this style.. now if I didn't make mistakes while sketching..

@Mims: haha. not really man jaw.. more a.. a.. fat-jaw.. But it's okay for you to sketch. Then everyone can learn from it :)

@Pirrip:
I really shouldn't have tried in the first place. It's punishment for random scribbling and then turning it into a picture.

The comic? not very well :( I've made some concept art, I tried to write the first piece of the first chapter in some kind off script (I am no good story write). I've made doodles layouts for three pages.. then I realized I had to make a map of all the places I am gonna use, to keep it consistent.. so now I am busy with that. In between.. I make this sort of art, which I might use for the comic.

Pirrip
Oct 23, 2010, 11:20 PM
I don't think you should have not tried. I mean, you have to take risks to get better, at least in my opinion. Sometimes, when I want to do a pose guaranteed to make someone look awkward someplace, I'll look up a posefile, or get someone around me to do a similar pose so I can draw it out just the way I want it.
I do that all the time, now, map out places I need to keep consistent in my manga pages. Like, there's a doujinshi my boyfriend and I have been working on for a while, and we needed to draw up some maps to keep the details right.
When it comes to making pages, I usually have an idea for a story first, then write it out in a script-like-format, and then draft single scenes to take no longer than 20 pages.
I usually make very rough looking draft pages, just jotting the poses and dialog and important details. Then once I've drafted a chapter out, I start on the real pages. It's a long process for me and I sincerely wish you luck.
Will you be posting any previews from it here on the forums?

Mimo
Oct 24, 2010, 12:58 AM

I need to help you on some stuff... but I still have no clue where to start ._. and I'm doing an art trade with Pirrips so I'll be busy for a bit. n.n; Well mebbe you can do some sketches and I can refine them a bit.. like add detail to stuff you don't have time to fix.. or something.

@Pirrip:
It's a good thing that I at least do try hard poses. These days I don't use any reference at all anymore for the poses. I've done that a lot, but after a few times I didn't learn much of it, so I decided to not use reference anymore (at least for characters, I do use reference for backgrounds). One of the reasons I am doing the comic, is so I get forced to draw all kinds of poses, perspectives and background.

My biggest trouble right now is getting the story done. What I've done so far, is that I made a timeline for like 12 possible chapters (never gonna make it) and I put the timeline PSO's original story aside it, to make sure that I keep true to the original story.

Originally Rust was gonna help me with the story, but I haven't seen him for months. So now I have to do it myself.

Just like you I am writing some sort of script with the dialogs and stuff that describes what happens. It's real chunky and I've written it in my own language at first. The comic will be english, but since english is not my native language, it's easier to think out the script in my own language and later translate it.

After writing down a small portion of the story, I wanted to test out how fast I could make it into some draft pages. (using wireframe figures for the poses and perspective and a rough layout of the environment (and of course including the textballoons). So far it's going pretty fast, but I have trouble with thinking of the environment out of the blue, which is why I first wanna make maps and also design objects that fit into the PSO universe.

There are still a lot of things I haven't really decided on. I will try to make a list so maybe other people can help me think.

You can follow my comic project on my DA group: http://project-comiq.deviantart.com/ people can join the group if they want, I really need help on some things to speed up. There is still a lot of concepting and thinking to do.

@Mims:
Yeah.. fat Qox :o eewwww..

I couldn't join the group,(it said it was closed) but I watched it.
I cannot stress enough that I think you're making a comic for all of the right reasons. I mean, comics/manga really are the best way to get better at things like poses, perspective, backgrounds, and all sorts of other things.

I grew up in the U.S., so I am a native speaker of English. BUT, I did make a hentai manga once--in Japanese-- so I've had a similar experience where I've written my draft pages in my native language before translating them for my final pages.

Years ago, when I first discovered PSO when it came out for Gamecube, I made a little comic about it in a small diary-like book. Your project makes me feel nostalgic. I'm very excited about your venture and I really can't express that enough.

Ok ok.. I just took the time to write things down about Project Comiq.

I also posted it into my group http://project-comiq.deviantart.com/, but I am also gonna post it here for people that might wanna help me out a bit :)

Project Comiq - Chapter 1

Project Comiq is a big project of mine to create a comic. The main reason why I do this, is to force myself to draw all kinds of hard poses, perspective, backgrounds and keep my art consistent. The comic will be based on the video game Phantasy Star Online and follows the story of the game, seen trough the eyes of my own character Qox.

Scope:
Chapter 1 will be used to give the reader some information about the story of PSO (mainly what happened before pioneer 2 reached Ragol). It will include Qox first days at the hunter academy/school whatever. I want to use that to give some basic information about photons, weapons, barriers etc. In the first chapter Qox will look a little different, being a HUnewearl for a change. She won’t be for long.. still searching for a reason why she will become a force :p

Main goal:
Getting at least one chapter done within a year time from start till end.

Mindset:

This will be a comic, not a manga. This means reading will be from top-left to down-right. Besides that, I am not gonna use any of these:

Suffixes: Please, no! western people that use japanese suffixes... thats so.. *#$@!
Japanese anime/manga cliché: It’s f*ckin cheap, predictable and it always looks the same (and very corny). With this I mean: Shrines, valentines day chocolate, festivals, fireworks, test of courage, amusement parks, etc.. Besides the fact they don’t belong in the PSO universe, I am western person, so I simply can’t draw something I don’t understand.
The comic won’t be colored. Probably only line work, and maybe some grey shading.
The comic will follow the PSO storyline as much as possible, but from my own perspective.
The comic will stay as close as possible to the universe of the PS franchise. This will require a lot of research. This also means that everything that gets designed, that is not in the game, must fit in the PSO universe.
I don’t want to much interference with the story from others (also the reason why I kept this project a secret). With that I mean: I don’t want to do requests to make someones character appear in the comic. I will decide myself who is and who isn’t gonna appear. Of course if your character fits in the story or I need just a random character I won’t mind using them. Just keep in mind I am not gonna use ridiculous name.
On the other hand: If someone thinks he/she can write great story’s: Feel free to help me, though I do need to get convinced about your writing skills :p
In terms of blood and violence: It will be a little mature. It won’t become some disgusting horror comic, just a good amount of death and blood.
There won’t be any hero’s and super powers. Qox is just a weak melee force. I think a more mature/realistic story fits PSO much better.

To do:
Before I can start drawing chapter 1, I want to get some thing done first, which are:

Area’s:

Qox’ home > map

Outer appearance of her home
Objects that you can find in her home, like: Bed, chairs, tables, kitchen, bathroom, lamps, doors, etc etc.. There is a lot of stuff in the home that needs to be designed in a way that it fits in the PSO universe.
Living area where Qox lives > map

Design of buildings, street.
Transport (teleports, or some kind of monorail?)
Shops in the living area?
School/academy (for hunters) > map

Building
Class rooms > Desks, etc.
Forest > map (should we use the games maps? or make an original forest area (that looks more like forest then a park :p).

Characters:

Caseal > The Caseal I’ve drawn a few times:

Needs a name
Needs a personality / bio
Needs some redesigning when it comes to her body part, which are now just basic HUcaseal parts. Maybe someone with more PSU knowledge can help me here.

Right now she functions as the person Qox shares her home with. I haven’t really thought of much more about her.
School > People

Teachers?
Random classmates, or maybe some that will come back later in the story

Phashion:
PSO needs it’s own type of fashion. The hunter outfits in PSO are fine, but what about clothes people wear when they are not fighting? I think the clothing in PSO should be less flashy then the clothes in PSU, a little bit between PSU and just normal clothing.
Every idea is welcome, since I suck at designing clothes.

Enemies:

Wolves/Gulgues?
Booma’s/Bartles?
Hilde any

I think that with the enemies we could do some cool stuff with normal / ultimate versions of the enemies. IT would be logic if halve evolved enemies exist, like a Booma having a shield on his back or a Gigo Booma getting grasshopper blades. Also, I want the enemies in the comic to appear scary and violent. So please no cuddly Booma’s :-)

Discussion points:

Barriers and Frames: How do they work, what is their size, weight, how does it get equipped? What is the difference with Armor and Shields?
Photon weapons: How do they function? Will a saber cut anything it touches? or are photons solid like a saber out of metal?
Mag and Photon Blasts: When you look closely at a Photon Blast, it looks like a D-cel creature. Does this mean D-cels were used to make Mags?
TECH: How does it work? What does it use to create the Technique? Are techniques a type of Photon energy? How are the elements used in TECHs? How do the DISKs work that are used to learn a technique? How come different levels of techniques exist? TECHs are not magic, like in Final Fantasy.
How are weapons and items stored? some kind of nano transformer?
How did all of the animals in the caves get infected by the saps of De Rol Le? Did he infect them one by one? That would be weird cause he swims in the sewers.

As you guys can see: Enough to do!

After more than a year, I am gonna replace the posters in my room. Anyone here interested in the my old ones? I will try to send them using the tube that comes with my new posters. If no one is interested I'll trow them away when I receive my new ones.

It's these:

I don't want anything for them. If I don't give them away, I will trow them away. They are not really worth much, since you can also make the poster yourself by downloading my high-res art and then order a poster on http://us.posterxxl.com/?c=us

I will also give other people the chance the react, then you'll need to have a death match to win the posters  (I think I can only send both at the same time, since I only get one tube with the new ones).

If signing makes you happy I will do so

And hell yes, signing them will make me extremely happy, cause your art is amazing!

And I'd rather have the one(s) you've owned, cause it means a little more something towards personal value, to me anyway.

If I have to get both, then hell yes, I will!
Also, if you ship them to me, I can mail out the other one to the next person, so someone else can get the other one.

Well there is plenty to do! You can pick anything from my list. Just try to keep it simple, That way it will be more satisfying and fun anyway. You can draw in any kind of way you want. What's most important is that I get an idea of what things should look like. A scribble is always more and better then no scribble at all.

If you can't decide about what to pick from the list: Here are some things I won't touch for quite some time:

Q's home:
- Caseals Bed
- Caseals closet
- Caseals Desk/chair etc.

School:
- Try to design some random classmates that are HUnter class (HUmar, HUmarl (doesn't exist in PSO, so you're free to make something out of it), HUnewearl, HUnewn (also doesn't exist), HUcast, HUcaseal. I can imagine the amount of CASTS are limited, since in the time of PSO, the amount of CASTS with an emotion chip are low and CASTS that are simply programmed (ones that can't develop themselves), wouldn't benefit from doing a Hunters training.

You can draw them with PSO clothes (used in battles), or in their casual clothes (also gives you a chance to design some phasion).

Animals:
You can try to make up some hybrid animal designs like the Savage wolf/Gulgus one I made. For the first chapter I only need forest animals.

Maps:
I need a mpa of the area where Q lives.

I really like your backgrounds, and your attention to their details. Like the picture of the Ohtoku City benches a couple posts above this one: absolutely exquisite. I also like the angles and poses you put your characters in.

*hopes this next bit doesn't sound mean or rude, because it isn't meant to be either*

However, if I could give you a little constructive criticism. I notice that you try to put a lot of detail into your characters, both faces and bodies. I'm not sure if it's your coloring style or line art, but, I think you might put a little too much detail into some things (such as the faces, or hands) that would possibly look a lot better simplified, like in an anime style.

Now, if it's just your art style, and you're happy with it, then ignore my suggestion. I'm just trying to help out a little, and offer a different take that you may (or may not) want to try.

Yep, you're on my wall  though I didn't have much choice, cause it's one of the few horizontal drawings I've made the past year. I made it @ http://www.posterxxl.com/ It's quite cheap actually.

@BIG OLAF:
Thanks!

And of course criticism is welcome! It's one of the things I've learned to accept @ work. I always take it seriously and try to pick it up and get better.

As for the faces and hands: Hmm yeah, they seem like a bad habit of mine (I think it started with my dark picture some years ago http://sappel.deviantart.com/gallery/#Creepy ). I dunno if it has much to do with my style (do I have a style at all?!). I do like putting in realism in my shading, though I am not very good at that, so it most of the time looks a little messed up/weird. I will see if I can do realism without complexity.

I think coloring is the hardest things to find/make for yourself XD I'm trying to try and find what coloring style I like the most, but I want to refine my lineart a little bit more. But I like the poses/angles you do, too. Mine are always straight on/boring. Mimo does a lot of experimental angles I like, too. But I watched that coloring tutorial you did. And I really like the light shading. Like up to the 4 minute mark. I think the darkness which make the characters pop a lot started a few minutes into it after that. But that might just be preference.

I have NO idea how you color inside the lines, and I want to learn how! I can't begin to figure out how much of my time coloring is me erasing the color outside of the lines XD

I think it's never to early to start with a coloring style. It's important to to keep improving both your line art and coloring, to keep them on the same quality level.

Don't be afraid: I really suck when it comes to poses and perspective. One thing that did seem to help me a little is by drawing a background first. That way you already have the right angle and perspective and it gets easier to make a pose within it.

About my coloring. My real style actually starts after the first to shading layers. The shading is simply to make the character from a flat 2D thing into something that has volume. The real coloring start after that. I think to many artists actually stop with coloring after simply shading. Problem with that, is that the picture will look very flat and an overkill of colors. Thats why I put a lot of additional colors to get more unified colors (in the video you can see I work a lot with blue, which is a very neutral color (duh, the sky is blue))

About coloring within the lines: I simply use the selection wand of Photoshop  You can read about how I do it in here (http://sappel.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2axaui).

Actually, Tynselle Nbareh is also a darker skinned girl. But that one was done with references. It was one of the earlier works.

If it was digital I would try it, but with pencils it's to risky. Also the photo made the white a bit to bright. In the real piece the white part of the eye looks smaller I think.

Thanks! Pencils and pastels I used.. and toilet paper to smudge

For those who want to know, this is my gear for my traditional art:
http://jojo.sappusx.com/gear1.jpg

http://jojo.sappusx.com/gear2.jpg

What you see:
Sketchbook (A4)
Sketchbook (A3)
Faber Castell coloring pencils (24) (can also be used for water color)
Neocolor Pastel crayons (15) (or whatever they are called in english)
Eraser
Point sharpener
Black pencil H (I use that to make sharp black lines)
Pencil 4H (I use that one mainly to sketch, since it's very sharp and light)
Pencil 4B (soft pencil, can be used for black/white shading)

My process for drawing on paper:
1. Stick figures > 4H pencil
2. Sketch > 4H pencil
3. Erase sketch to make it barely visible
4. Line with Black H pencil
5. Color the shine FIRST > Coloring pencils (sadly I miss light blue )
6. Color the atmospheric shade (blue in most of my art) > Coloring pencils
7. Color the whole picture very lightly
8. Smudge the whole thing with toilet paper
9. Color drop shadows > Black coloring pencil
10. Recolor every part using the pastel crayons. Important during this step is the amount of pressure you use. Too much pressure and the drawing is ruined.
11. Smudge the pastel with toilet paper, this will make the colors very smooth, yet the color is a lot deeper then you will get with just coloring pencils.
12. With all the coloring, the black lines almost disappeared and look kind of grey, so I always redraw the lines with a black coloring pencil.

The glow of the double saber is mainly done with the red pastel, using more pressure on the edge, and smudging that a bit. On the ground and around the double saber I used very very very light pressure on the red pastel crayon and smudged it, to make it blend with the other colors.

As you guys might know, I am working on a little comic project which is based on the PSO universe. You check out my progress @ my DA group http://project-comiq.deviantart.com/ (feel free to join and help/support me).

Because I've seen most of these kind of 'grande' ideas fail, I've decided to actually do this right, and do a lot of concepting/researching before I actually start with drawing pages.

Till now I've sketched 10 pages and 3 of them have high res lines. There is also a lot of concept art made by me, Mimo and Rust. My goal is to get at least one chapter done (at least 20 pages long) before the end of October. While I am pretty confident that I can get the drawing part done in time, I suck at writing story's and english is not my primary language, making things only harder for me.

Since I can't stand corny stories (the main reason I quit watching most anime shows), I want this comic to have at least some decent story (though the story is not really the most important part of the comic for me).

In order to let things make sense, I tried to research some of the stuff that is left unexplained in PSO. I'd like to discus these things with as many people as possible, maybe you guys have better ideas about these things then I do.

Here we go!

1. Barriers and Frames. How do they work?

Barriers: I see barriers as some sort of invisible shield/screen that is attached to the device that most hunters have on either one of their arms. It makes use of photons to charge it.

Frames: I see frames as some sort of thin layer of photons, that covers the whole body. The frame will protect the wearer from fatal attacks until it is depleted. In that sense the HP bar you see in game would be the amount of Photons left protecting the body. When the protection layer is gone, a single hit from a Booma could be enough to kill a hunter. The frame will use the photons that are inside the body of the hunter. The stronger the frame, the more photons it will need to work. That way, a rookie hunter won't be able to use high class frames.

2. Photon Weapons

My main problems with photon weapons:
a. Are the photons solid, or is the just a stream of energy like in starwars that can be turned on/off? What would happen of you would touch the photon part of a weapon? would it cut of your hand?
I like the idea more that photons in weapons are solid and can be toughed and that they cut using the edge.
b. I thought it would make sense that one weapon is stronger then the other, because of the amount/type of photons inside. Now the question is: How does the attack power of the hunter add to the power of the weapon. Is it the physical power of the hunter + the photon power of weapon, or could it be that hunters use photon in their own body to add to the photons in the weapon?

3. Mag and Photon Blasts

Mags: As far as I know, mags are living machines that have D-cels inside of them. The question is: How do mags give their owner 'more power' like in PSO? Some kind of photon transfer? Doesn't make much sense to me actually..

Photon Blasts: Mags build up energy each time the owner gets hit. Could this be like collecting photons that flow away from the frame when the owner gets hit? During the Photon Blast stage they will transform into a D-cel creature and release the collected energy.

Still makes not much sense :p

4. TECHs

M
M
M
M
M
M
MAGIC!?

No, not really. TECHs are more something scientific. In PSO TECHs can be used without weapons, so it must be a bit different from PSU.

How I think it could work in PSO:
In PSO you have Disks that lets you learn a TECH. My explanation would be that a Disk writes a small part off the brain with a formula that will enable Humans/Newmans to manipulate photons and release them from inside their body. TECHs can't be learned without a Disk, because they would be to complex to learn for a human being.

Higher level Disks (in PSO you can only level up TECHs with higher level Disks) simply contain improved formula's that will use up more photons (TP).

I dunno how to explain the different elements.. anyone ideas?

5. Storage of weapons and items?

In PSU they have the nano transformer, but what abut PSO? any ideas?

Akaimizu
Apr 18, 2011, 12:17 PM
1. Interesting theory. Even though in PSO the Barriers and frames were given no distiction from each other. They were just a different level of invisible body shielding. I often thought of them more like those personal defensive barrier grids from DUNE. The idea is that they do help the user from some scrapes, but have limited issues with how the object is to strike at the person. As if the technology isn't there to make perfect sense of what (going through the shield) is from the user or used against the user. So while it's pretty good at recognizing things which are directly attached to the joints of the user, it can be hazy on other things.

The stronger the shielding, the more massive attacks it can protect against. Still, like faults in the armors, these have them too, but moreso from the standpoint of technological difficulties in determining what they act against. Given how they react you also notice that little things don't get zapped or repelled by the shielding. (Maybe it is a lack of details, but you don't see bugs, or even various amounts of foliage, get disturbed by the shielding. Yet, when it does flash, it flashes in a clear bubble (or flat arc) separated from the body.

2. Photons are pretty much like Light sabers in which the actual contained photon is energy, or some kind of heated plasma. In general, you don't see them ever coming in direct contact with anything unless they are to cut. However, I would almost related them to some sort of heated plasma that can be shaped and formed to harder/sharper properties. This would make more sense in the idea that hides of certain strength actually can effectively repel the weapon with little to no structural damage. Especially since natural or biological monsters (with no technology nor light-refracting hides) don't have shield devices, just hides, bones, and shells.

3. Mags could be some of the more simplest living-machines in design. The programming to give them sort of an awareness and limited personality. Mags can and do interface with the user's own technological systems. It is here where you basically have a link to how Mags can affect the hunter. The person inside is one thing, but their devices enhance them to capabilities of a true hunter. Kind of like Assisted strength, aspects to increase their accuracy, defense is a given, and even certain aspects to increase the resonance of their own brain-waves that work towards techs. Remember, even without weapons in hand, they are still wearing stuff to enhance their own bodily resources to work as a hunter.

4. Answered in part by 2 and 3. Techs are actually not magic, but a coalescence of Photon energy (which is actually an existing element that exists in all things, in Phantasy Star Online and others) kind of like the force, but more so adherent knowledge of its existence and how to harness it. What's even more interesting is how they linked the process of biological brain waves to enhance this effect. Photon is biological as the creatures themselves. So the idea is that a part of the biological brain is useful for powering these photon reactions (Techniques) and it was even figured out which part does it. Thus how the Newmans were created for the sole purpose of having more intense brainpatterns to drive these techniques. The hunter outfits, themselves (or a device they always keep on them) takes these patterns and enhances them to physical manisfestations.

This is one of the areas that fascinated me since PSO. Put the real Phantasy aspect in there. I always looked at it as false-fantasy. The idea that we, as humans, created stuff of fantasy with our minds, but we make and use technology to make it real. We use science to become wizards, perform biological experiments to create *elves*, etc. It would've been even cooler if creatures like the dragons were all human constructs, but that's not the case. This would've joined that Anne Mcaffrey area of storytelling hinting that mankind can actually re-envision their world (through science) to work like it does in the old fantasy books.

5. Nanotransformers, technically were the only real explanation of them. However, in the past (like PSO and perhaps before hand) they are limited in resource and what access they have. It wasn't until PSU where they had nonatransformers good enough to be able to actually contain Clothes (right off the body of the host) and Hairstyles. Separated individual items (not worn) was a limitation of the old nanotransformers as the advanced programming required for such careful placement of actual worn articles (regardless of individual's body size and frame) was not something people figured out at the time. This is still, in one part, a teleporter mixed with a possible dimensional space for which item gets contained in. So tricky interpretations of what is what apply. Think of "The Fly" but in a different more advanced light. We may have gotten past the determination of what constitutes and actual individual object from something else; now it's the complexities of what belongs to what and where.

Believe me, I took all of these to heart, before I even made my first Fan Fiction of Phantasy Star. Some of these are obviously clarified in an interpretation beyond was was given, but that's the thing. There are holes in Sonic Team's explanation, but with just enough to have people just accept that this is how things work, as long as it makes understandable gaming sense. Of course, understandable gaming sense isn't enough for a full blown detailed story, in which all little aspects of technology get thrown under scrutiny. You may see some variation in other interpretations, but this one is my somewhat loose one that seems to work with the idea of PSO and PSU if taking the PSO before PSU route.

Thanks for your input. I try to gather as much as possible and then come up with my own vision.

I also like PSO because of it's more down to earth approach to things, like the techs. A device as the enhancer of brainwaves into physical manifestations is not a bad idea at all. In that case a disk would e more of a small module or chip hunters put into their 'device'.

About the barriers and frames, they are different in PSO. Frame == armor, barrier == shield. The barrier is attached to the arm and is more concentrated, useful for deflecting attacks. Frames can also hold units to further enhance the abilities (photons) of the hunter.

Akaimizu

Ahh. For some reason, I forgot that part. Makes sense. I got the terms mixed up. I always remembered there were 2 general descriptions for the same kind of defense.

It was Barriers and Shields
Armors and Frames.

qoxolg
Apr 21, 2011, 10:39 AM
Yep.. Shields and armor could only get equipped by Hunters and Rangers. Maybe more demanding.. and less efficient then frames, and since a Force needs to use part of their photons to 'cast' techs, armors/shields would be to taxing? hmm..

also.. Resta would in that case be simply a recharge of the frame? hmm.. interesting..

Akaimizu
Apr 21, 2011, 11:17 AM
It could be done that way, particularly if it is to say that most attacks are powerful enough to incapacitate somebody in one blow, if they don't have them on. Thus why it's rare for a hunter to achieve total death in battle, and there's time for them to get rescued. A hunter is only brought down to the state where their devices can only sustain the necessary vitals.

This is due to the idea that *not since Phantasy Star 1* could anybody be truly resurrected with the technology they know now. PS1 had true magic. Resurrection was real. It is the stuff that is long forgotten. After that, the only way you could figuratively go on is if you were either Cloned or you didn't die in the first place.

Mimo
Apr 30, 2011, 02:30 PM
I see a huge problem. In the wire sketch, the hips are made out to look like a cone... when it's not suppose to be like that. You have to work with three ovals to get the curvy ness of her hips, otherwise it looks stiff and like a cone. Also you changed her left thigh from the final. It's correct in the sketch, but you took a chunk from her in the final picture. This give it an odd illusion that the left leg/thigh is thinner than her right. Which makes it look like she's got more junk in the trunk on the right side. D: Hope that helps, I could probably re-do your sketch, but I dont want you to take it as an insult. :c

McLaughlin
Apr 30, 2011, 05:56 PM
By no means am I a good drawer, but I think, if you imagined her standing straight and facing you, her hips would look really awkward and flare out like bell bottom pants. I'm on my way out or I'd try and show you what I mean with some paint comments, but I think if you "pulled in" the right hip (our left) she'd look a lot more anatomically correct.

Where her hand is resting on her hip wouldn't look so weird if the her entire posture was bent to match, but the way it looks to me is almost like the lower half of her torso is a right angle triangle, and the body can't bend like that. If you throw one hip out to the side the other one follows it. In your drawing, it doesn't.

That's just my unqualified opinion though. I still think you did a great job (far better than I could ever manage).

Sayara
Apr 30, 2011, 07:25 PM
I think, the biggest hip situation is that the armor has no presence on her body. Armor, I'd at least imagine would have some effect to her bare skin, like compression or something; you dont have that; so it looks weird that way

qoxolg
Apr 30, 2011, 07:54 PM
@mims: No thats fine. I am by no means a pro artist (or becoming one), so it's no insult to me. I don't have the luxury of anyone teaching me how to draw, pretty much everything I do is self taught. I don't have much of a clue what I am doing. Of course I can see myself it looks wrong, though the hard part is actually fixing it. Since I wanted to be the first PSO2 fan art with this one, I didn't really put much effort in the sketch.

@McL: Opinions are always qualified.

@Sayara: I don't think it's just the armor placement (Which indeed is a bit wrong). I had a hard time finding any reference of the lower body at all. I still need to figure out how this outfit work.

Thanks everyone for their comments. Always appreciated.

Copic markers try-out
Just got my first set of (12) Copic Markers :D This was a first tryout. I miss a lot of basic colors (I got a light/pastel pack) like red, orange, dark blue, light green, greys, etc, etc.
It was fun!

I think I will take a few months break from my comic project. Don't worry, I will not abandon the project, I just want to do some other stuff then just working on the comic. Most of all I am trying to sharpen my drawing skills.

I am still having to much trouble with just the basics of drawing (mainly anatomy and perspective). Just by entering the Drawing Jam on CGhub made me realize how much I suck. I also started watching some videos from http://www.youtube.com/user/FZDSCHOOL and in one of the videos the guy compared drawing with solving a math problem. Sometimes you already think you know the answer but you have no clue how you got there and you will try to reverse engineer/guess the whole formula to get to the answer. This is very time consuming and might not even get you the right results. The better way is to actually get to the answer by breaking the formula up in simple parts to get to the correct answer a lot faster.

The same thing can be said about drawing. Usually I just start doodling having almost no clue about that the heck I am actually doing, which results in halve assed stuff that takes huge amounts of my time.

I've already started doing some "life-drawing" exercises using photo's (I guess it's better then nothing). I am also gonna order some good books about anatomy/perspective hoping I will get somewhere

In the mean time you guys can drop some requests again if you feel like.
