Hiya,
Another rant tonight, i'm on a roll. No doubt cos it's been just over a week since going cold turkey not smoking any tobacco or bud. So my moods stilla bit higgeldy piggeldy as it were (i love that term).
But yeah online profiles, it's a whole generation of self-obsession. Values in society have changed drastically within a few decades. Parents are no longer viewed as the center of a kids life so much (kids feel they know it all at such a young age, human rights madness rules. The world is bound in red tape, teachers feeling powerless in schools, kids running amock with what they think they're entitled to). The internet has bred early self awarness to people (worrying considering so much of the "info" on the internet should be taken with a pinch of salt), and I think it's made a lot of people grow up quicker than they should have, this celebrity culture, media fuelled society is all rather unnerving in my opinion. People so desparate to be themselves, yet there's more cliches and social cliques in socierty these days, people trying to stand out but also needing to huddle together in their groups, have a sense of belonging, but it's all about "me me me me".
Facebook is a prime example in my opinion, these online profile sites are a global phenomenon. But what's it all about? Why is it addictive? Why do people spend hours on it every week, sometimes every day and then outside of the internet (in real life) I hear Facebook being mentioned a horrific amount of times.
Befriend all your old friends (and in time realize why many were old friends...) once you've accumulated masses of "friends" (which can be an interesting defintion in itself if you ask individuals) then you can grace them with your day to day updates (because we all wanna know). But it's not as if you have a choice, once you're friends with someone you'll be graced what they have to say no matter what. How much of it's relevent? Why spam people daily with these thoughts? It's facelsss conversation, much like internet arguements, people say things they'd never have the courage to say in real life, introverts and socially inept people can be the "badman" they can cuss and swear like a sailor and it doesn't matter if people retaliate they can just spew even fouler language and get a weird kick out of insulting people. FB allows people to barrage each other with their thoughts day after day, hour after hour and people can "like" what you have to say... oh how thrilling for you...
Why do so many also strive for popularity on a website? Picture comments recipricated (moreso on myspazz), let's flatter each other's ego's and inflate them more and more. People taking camera's EVERYWHERE. And of course every spoilt kid whose got their folks to spend hideous amounts on a flashy camera is a Photographer (of course)
Let's take loads of pictures...every girl pout and have your face at an angle to make you look thin. I recall when cameras were used (as a kid) for holidays and special occasions, now everyone has cameras, some people using them daily to flaunt themselves on the internet. Its like people's claim to fame, the worship of the image, of the self but it's ill deserved and hollow imo. I'm not religious but it's ironic how the old testament said do not worship false images...how prophetic as nowadays it's not false gods, as Nietzche states, we are our own gods, and nowadays it seems that's what people firmly believe, the world has gotten so selfish it's a scary place and people are so fake, trying to appear to be something they aren't. When if you boil it down to basics, humans are animals, life is about surviving and reproduction and societies built itself upon this and evrything to do with socializing can be looked at in these 2 terms of human nature in my opinion.
If it's not collecting an ungodly amount of friends or photos (followers or friends of friends or friends of friends of friends and then going "wow what a small world this person knows this person that I know...and how well do you know them exactly? It isn't that surprising if most people are collecting friends like they are wasting hours on FB). Or If not befriending half the county/state you live in then it's playing horrific sub-standard games which just seem to have no point to them yet loads of followers. Or having hundreds of groups you've joined which help "define you", or just another excuse to assault people with more pointless tit-bits of information.
Ugh I'm glad I deleted all my profiles, I used to waste hours on them and then I stopped to think...why? Most people you speak to are fake and if you do find a diamond amongst the coal and meet them they tend to be totally different to their internet personna.
Baaah rant over. btw sorry if the layout of this is poor im v. tired and just about to go to bed. Maybe an irrelevant rant, maybe it's got some sense to it but it's just my opinion.

Yeah, I've been ranting all over the place about Facebook on PSOW.
Glad you compressed everything negative about it into one, all-encompassing Rant.
And of course whenever I rant in person about it to any Facebook zombies, they don't understand or pay attention. Teachers and old heads did though. It almost prevented a project or two from being completed, so F it and it can go to hell.

People say I need one. Nope. Nobody does.
Could use it to try to find some old friends, who possibly aren't drama club insane bored young people - with the online bullying and whatnot, since its based on actual name. But just seems like a hassle, next one coming soon, this one to have its Xanga/MySpace/Friendster/WTFever downfall soon anyway, as they all do - creators billionaire cash out as they can do, never to fix anything else after that. Denizens flock to next "big" thing.

I know the feeling people usually don't listen, or joke about it saying they're not addicted, specially so with people I work with, when it's the only website, or thing I see them doing msot of the day at work but they get away with it >_>
have you heard the latest travesty though? They're actually making a facebook movie? When I heard about it I wanted to pull my face off lol.
If it gets any recognition or becomes a cult hit I think i'll cry for about a week.

I go online to have anonymous discourse, not to talk about how I just got a hair cut or new tires. Of course, I also think about if someone linked the real me with a [Insert Social Networking Platform Here] account how it might alter my real world opportunities. I've heard too many stories of people being denied a job either partially or entirely due to some site, or even being fired for something they posted. While I highly doubt I would make such a boneheaded comment online, I also want to minimize the chances of such a flub from coming back to haunt me.
Add to that me looking back on old forum posts of mine, here and elsewhere, or even my own personal writings from years gone by and I see just how much I would prefer not having some social network ball and chain around my neck 10 years from now. We grow and mature and generally would prefer to forget about our past mistakes. More than that, we would prefer others do so. That makes it doubly important to me to not have an easily identifiable internet link to the real me.

Now instead of a homepage you have a profile page.

Did you... read anything at all about the Facebook movie or are you honestly just going to rage over the generalized summary of "a movie about Facebook?"
Facebook is a product that is worth billions of dollars and is used by millions of people. Did you know that the Mark Zuckerberg, the guy who created it, is a huge douche who stole the basic idea from some classmates? And then how he continued to screw people over to help himself out become a millionaire? And how he continues to do so?
That is what the movie is about. It's basically "Pirates of Silicon Valley" for the new decade.

That's why I only go on Facebook about 3-4 times a day, and only for about 5 minutes each time (if even that).
I definitely agree with the pointless "status update" crap. I don't even do that. I might post one "status update" every few weeks. Honestly, the only reason I have a Facebook is so I can contact my friends if they can't be reached any other way.
..that, and I got pestered by all my friends and family about making one. So, I'm sure if I deleted it, it would cause quite a hooplah.
I also know what Tifa means by a society of fake people, and real-life lamers acting like "bad asses" because they're hiding behind a keyboard. All that shit makes me rage so hard, but I won't get into it here.

I have a facebook, and I'm beginning to hate it more and more. Most of the stuff on there is just pointless, annoying crap anyway. Very rarely it's actually useful for organizing things with your friends, but it's not like you couldn't do that without facebook. And one time I saw a person with a farmville tee shirt. My god, that has to be the dumbest thing ever.

Exactly. What's that old saying? "All things in moderation"?
If all someone does all day, every day, is one single thing, whether it be perusing Facebook all day (some of my family members come to mind), or playing a video game, there's something wrong.
But hell, at least video games are fun sometimes. How much fun can one have on Facebook for hours and hours? I mean, really. All one does on Facebook is read a cascade of pointless information that isn't going to help anyone. In fact, some girl on my Facebook friend's list this morning put (and I copy/paste):
"Eating breakfast, then gym. Then work from 11-6!!! :)"
Like I (or anyone, for that matter) give a shit. Well, besides her friends (who are just as stupid, mind you), who "Like" the status.
*sigh*... I better stop now or I never will.

What's wrong with people enjoying hearing about their friend's day? When you meet up with a friend after school or work, don't you ask them how their day went?
And people have always loved looking through pictures - it's why people keep photo albums around in their house - so the whole idea of perusing photos on Facebook makes sense.
But yes, obviously, if that's all they do all day it is a problem.
I can understand people complaining about the prevalence of Facebook or how they feel inclined to use it or something like that, but arguing about some of the basic features (which are just digital versions of what people have been doing forever) just seems silly to me.

To people complaining about Facebook being a waste of time....
How much time do you spend on psu/pso??
How much time do you spend on this forum??
So basically if Facebook is a waste of time, so is well, basically everything on the internet
Only difference is, people are on Facebook for their friends, not finding out the latest info on a videogame, so i would say the are having their time well spent compared to what we're doing now...

Yeah, that was one of my worst mistakes, looking back: getting my whole damned family on my Facebook friend's list. Always pestering me, and putting stupid shit on my statuses (when I actually do feel like typing one up).
On top of all that, there's no going back now. If I delete them, they'll eventually notice. Then, my mom will get a barrage of Facebook messages and/or phone calls asking "OMG WHY HE DELETE ME!?1!". At least, that's what happened to my friend when he took his family off his friend's list.

But if you mean flirting with complete strangers... or someone you've met only a few times, then yes. It's ridiculous.

Thankfully, I think we'd still be okay even if it is rocket science, because Blue-Hawk is apparently one of the few people who can understand that.
I also heard he wrote the great American novel and solved pi, and that was just before lunch.
But yes, in all seriousness, there are ups and downs about all new forms of communication and social interaction. Even the modern concept of a novel created some trouble when it was first introduced, but I think everything turned out for the better. As for Facebook? I'm pretty sure it won't be the downfall of modern civilization.

I see no problem with texting, as long as you actually spell out the words, and don't make yourself sound like an idiot.
Also, just because you don't see the person face to face while texting, doesn't mean you cant have an intelligent conversation, Blue-Hawk.
From someone that uses over 12,000 text messages a month, I always use the correct spelling of words and whatnot.
If I could talk to these people face to face as much as I text them, I probably wouldn't talk to them as much.
And before you say, "why not just talk to them on the phone" or something like that, well, unlimited text messages are a lot cheaper than unlimited minutes, unless you're on Sprint. And I'm not.

But have you seen the number of clicks on Alex Craig's Profile - or visitor message conversations - to another person. With Online dating, mentioned openly in the ending of his Member Spotlight too - hence the traffic to his profile.
So he's not immune to people connections through the Internet, despite intelligence and good nature.
And person claimed as infamous, other PSOW men supposedly were git got. Film Teach had his own story about his friend dating an online friend, "quote fingers" : a female, never met up-always flakes out of the plan - spending on plane tickets too, but at this point he just wants some kinda closure.

Every now and then, I spot a tiny, succulent slice of childhood or current trauma.
I understand why people troll forums, why people grief other players in MMOs. They want to wrap themselves in the emotions of others, and being cruel or manipulative is the easiest way to do it.
That said, it requires you to not only be empty or berefit of friends, as an example, but to ignore your own feelings and emotions (maybe you don't have any, weirdo). In the end, the person you enrage by camping their corpse or by calling them a "no-nothing booger-face" is probably realer than you could hope to be. Unless you're a magnificent bastard, and that's a totally different story (and two hours of reading TV Tropes).

"Tranny Friday" with that friend around the drunks? The Internet (negative) 2 Point-Oh doesn't have a button for that game changer! Was that friend's Friday soo amazing with tranny drunk encounters or equal rowdyness? Probably not eh?
& they can start taking buttons off websites already. Its not that special or important to click the "like button." Plus it seemed like the laziest asinine thing Facebook created to virally advertise.
