OK, I am going nuts! I purchased a Hunter's license on my PC so I could play PSO online. Well, I got to sign on, (and this is with Automatic DHCP) it says, "Failed to retrieve an IP address from DHCP..."
I tried it with the DNs numbers and DHCP hostname, but still the same thing. Then I tried the manual way. I filled in everything and I get to the pic of a lobby and I get Error 102. The thing about manual is that my IP address changes every 24 hours. I guess that means I have to change it when I go on? I've also tried resetting my modem, still no luck. My ISP provider is Cox High Speed Internet and I have no router, just external cable modem connect to the Gamecube BBA through a RJ-45 wire. I've contacted Nintedo about this tonigt, but I contacted Sege before this was happening (that was when I couldn't even attempt to connect). Someone out there has to have the same problem as me, I think. Maybe you guys can help. Please! Thanks!

Hello,
I am having exactly the same problem as you. I am glad I am not alone, I thought for a moment there I was going strange. I don't know what to do about it, though. Not about going strange, I mean about the connecting problem.

You know what really gets me? The lack of support. I phoned Nintendo, and Infogrames, and Blueyonder (that's my ISP here in the UK), and none of them would help me. Nintendo technical support didn't even have a copy of the game! They didn't have a copy of PSO on day of release. How lax is that??

I think that because you signed up on a computer with a different DNS address you are trying to connect with one that doesn't match.
Also, did you sign up for the right GAME? Gamecube is not the only PSO game, ya know.

Try leaving all the DNS numbers, hostnames and everything blank. Retrive IP addy auto set on..unless you've already done this.

Cheers, guys...
I got it working, but only by connecting the thing to the modem directly which wasn't what I wanted to do. Still, it actually works which is quite reassuring. Yes, the thing is you need to unplug or switch off (standby isn't good enough) the modem after you switch cables. This is very important! Switch the modem off and the GCN, and then switch on the modem, wait for it to set up, and then switch on the GCN. Then it should work. But I still don't know how to get through that damn router...

Well, I'm sure it was for the PSO GC, becuase that is what the site said.
I do have everything on auto, I reseted my modem, by unpluggin it from socket, unplugging the GC modem, and left my comp off while trying to sign on. The DNS numbers would be the same cause I am using the ones the computer uses to connect to. A "professional" Sega technical assitant is supposed to call ME, but I don't know how long it will take. I checked my cable modem if it suppotrs this type oif networking, and it does. I contacted my ISP and they verified my settings and said that they support it. I hope someone here has the answer, PLEASE!!!!

Toshiba, i don't know what they could do. I've called my ISP about 10 times so if they heard my voice they would hang up, and they didn't really help me much either.

And presumably you've also tried leaving the DNS server numbers blank, and still nothing?
That's terrible... I'm shocked at the lack of support from these companies! This should be simple but for some people it's turning into a nightmare!!

Have you registered your MAC address with blueyonder? The MAC address should be on the bottom of the BBA and has to be registered on blueyonders self care webpage.

If ure using BBA input ure IP address manually u need both DNS numbers too, u can find this out by going to network options then propterties, it should be in there somewhere, also reset and unplug ure pc and modem after and before re-entering ISP/ and config details... goodluck http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

Well, I got it to work. It had to with that I didn't have an ethernet card. I can only use one connection at once for now. Does anyone have a specific way of resetting the cable modem on your computer, becuase for mine, I have to reset it alot for like 30 minutes.

Sounds like your best bet would be to buy a router. There are some cheap, decent ones. I broke down tonight and bought a router, 25 foot RJ45 cable, and a BBA for my GC. It appears more people have problems trying to connect with modems to me. A router will probably save you a lot of headache, and in the end may be the only way to do it without constantly switching. Plus with a router you can be on your computer and play the game at the same time. Anyways, good luck.

theres an excelent guide somewhere on this site of how to comect using a BBA and no router, it went something like this:
you need;
an ethernet card on your P.C (or a spare ehternet socket/rj45)
An RJ45 crossover cable ( male to male) or an RJ45 patch lead ( male to male) with a crossover adaptor ( female-male)
Windows 98se or above ( not win 98 first edition)
set up ICS on your computer, there should be something on the set up that says 'allow other users to conect to the internet through this computer"
conect your P.C to the gamecube BBA using the crossover lead/ patch lead with crossover adaptor
Re-start your P.C
on your gamecube select provider option on the broadband set up screen in pso, and leavle everything set at default, keep hitting next until its done
now it should work.

Thanks, yes I have. But it shouldn't make any difference anyway because ideally the GC is behind the router and the ISP shouldn't need to know about the MAC address of the Gamecube. It works if I go straight through the modem, but not if I try to go through the router.

I get this error often .. I think its actually because my computer is slow and the RAM/CPU gets to clogged up.
It usually connects fine after I reboot my computer.

Rich_T, I got some help in the Java Chat and they tried to help me setup with me that type of thing, except for two things.
1) I can't setup the ICS because I don't have an Ethernet Card on my PC.
2) I'm sure they said I didn't nee dany crossover cables, just a regular RJ-45.
I'm trying to get some info about this by myself.
EDIT: I was able to connect, but it is hard switching back and forth to the PC to GC with my connection.

Ethernet cards are cheap, about £10, you need a crossover cable, or crossover adaptor and patch lead if you are hookng your GC up to your P.C ethernet card, and using ICS.
After reading through all the problems people seem to be having trying to get it to work, i was shocked at how easy and quick the ICS method was to set up and get runing.
now all i do is switch on my P.C , conect to the internet, switch on my GC, and at the end of a 25 metre cable ( poked through holes in the wall) sits my GC in another room , and its ready to go, peice of piss.

OK, my particular problem is the hub, not the router. It seems the BBA connects at 10 MBits/s and won't connect at 100 MBits/s which is the only speed at which my hub will transmit. So naturally the GC won't go through it. Problem solved. No thanks to any technical support telephone lines I called.

Well, some people say router, but I would need a ethernet card too. I think I will just set up an ICS. Do I need a regular RJ-45 AND a RJ-45 Crossover?
