Background about me as an artist:
Ever since I was a kid, I loved to draw: starting from scribbles on the walls of the apartment where I had lived and the carpet with markers, I started to refine my drawing ability sometime after 2007. Of course, before that, my drawings lacked proportion when drawn from memory. Even now I still have difficulty drawing from my imagination, but it's much easier. This was facilitated by the drawing class I had in my freshman year of college. In that class especially, my skills improved as much as I had hoped: I learned more about proportions, how the body can move, and shading. I also began using other media, like ink and wash and charcoal. Unfortunately, I haven't been using those media for my fan works but I may get a chance to do it later.

Anyway, here's my topic, and comments and critiques are much appreciated.

You've definitely improved since you first started scanning in your work: your poses have become more dynamic / action-packed, and your proportions are getting better.

As far as constructive criticism goes, I would suggest maybe experimenting with more colors on your vectors as well as playing with different light sources. For instance, maybe you could have added some whites/yellows to your Red Ring Rico Gizonde Strike piece along with more shadows due to the newly introduced light, or maybe you could have added some whites/blues/purples (along with shadows) to the Gal Gryphon to make the lightning "come alive." Nice angle on the Gal Gryphon piece, it really gives that uneasy feeling.

On larger pictures such as your Phantasy Race to the Finish and Knights' Clash at Arctica (well, not so much on the Arctica one), you might bring the focus in more toward the action. When you engage the audience in the action, the picture will have more interest. (Why not try using a "diagonal" point of view or something next time?, just a thought).

I also like your ink pieces a lot, especially the San Francisco Cable Cars. Nice job on the trees (I assume that's what those are) and your use of red.

They look awesome, jeez I really need to get back into drawing. It's getting onto a 2 year break but I'm just lacking the enthusiasm for it. :( But good going, looking forward to seeing them coloured :D

stark096, I haven't been able to get Bryce or Daz 3D studio working. :\ I don't know how to operate it, basically, and I'm a little on the stubborn side on learning new things.

Anyway, here's what I've been working on lately. Not Phantasy Star related, unfortunately. Speaking of which, I'll probably be working on that again soon enough.

Good day, denizens of PSO-World. Upon advice of a friend, I decided to post something here.

Firstly, I do apologize for my negative demeanor over the past few posts. I had and have been troubled by things and I wrongfully took it out on the readers of this topic.

Secondly, while I do not know how well I'll do this time, I'll try my best by updating on a somewhat more frequent schedule, provided that I draw more frequently in the same intervals.

Finally, here's the drawing in question.

Please, people of PSO-W. I ask of your assistance in giving me some constructive criticism. I greatly appreciate and value others' opinions, especially if thoughtful and/or thought provoking. It would also help if the advice were specifically detailed as to what is working and what isn't working in my pieces.

P.S. If anyone would like a higher resolution picture, I'm more than happy to share. I'll just have to upload it to deviantART, but it'll be in this topic, perhaps in this post.

Hmm... I don't know about the contest but if all you need to do is improve then I'd say your good to go.
For a small bit of advice you may want to define your characters face a bit more in the modern picture.
Although it maybe fine at high resolution in the pictures I've seen all I can make out are the eyes.
It may just take darkening a few lines, but if your going for the faceless warrior in full charge then never mind.

And now that I'm looking at the contest I'm considering putting something together...
I got some pics on my DA page scanned in from the late 90's that I know I've improved on.
But I only have 2 days to get the entry in so I'll probably just skip it.

Anyhow, good luck.

Ah, yes, I suppose it is a good idea to make the facial features a little more visible. Thanks for your comment.

As a side note, I wasn't really intent on making it into the contest, as the contest was a good idea to see how much I've improved -- but nonetheless, I appreciate your time.


The contest ends in 2 days but it may be worthwhile just to show your improvements, too! It doesn't really have to be a contest submission -- mine was just one because it coincided with the contest dates. It'd be pretty nice to look back, side to side, on your progress.
