I just bought PSP2 used and I think it's really a great game. They're going back to a lot of the systems in PSO like armor units, disks, and finding complete weapons while still keeping the game play system from PSU.

What surprised me is that; I kind of like PSU's crappy game play system better.

Photo arts: Disks or exp?
The nice part about leveling photon arts was that if you put time into it the art would get better the more you used it. Disks on the other hand are nice because it's not like you need to spend an eternity to level something up just to be able to use it. It adds to the cooperation of the game; you need to explore more and trade with friends; while in PSU you tended to have solo for hours at a time to level.

Weapons: Boards or whole?
After picking up a ton of shitty weapons I'm also starting to miss boards. In retrospect it was nice because you could choose what you wanted to make and how much you wanted to make of it. And on a few boards you had the option of using kubara wood for a weapon with the chance of getting better once grinded. It did take a lot of fun out of playing; a red box that dropped right after killing an enemy that you could use right away was definitely preferable to getting a recipe, tracking down everything, waiting impatiently to make it just to have your PM hand you a mother fucking okiku doll just so you could start all over.

Elements: On the weapon?
The reason why I preferred being anything but a hunter in PSU was that you didn't have to collect multiple version of the same weapon. If you level your techs;you can slap them on what ever and proceed to kick ass carrying around a grinded dagger for the off-hand XX resistant enemy. It's kind of nice to not have to level everything, but I'm kind getting neurotic trying to balance my pallet. In PSO items at least had multiple attributes and only four at that so it wasn't too bad. In PSP2 it's a nightmare with every level having a decent variety of enemies, and having to try and manage the elements for each one on your tiny pallet.

So with PSO2 up, what would you like to see? Balance? One or the other, what's your ideal Phantasy Star game system?

After playing PSP2, I agree and like certain aspects of PSU more. A big one that matters a lot to me is combat. The ideas of chains are nice, but they don't feel fun in gameplay. Mashing X 8 times and then pressing triangle is not as fun as attacking, just attacking right after, using the PA, and hitting big numbers right away. I prefer the smaller updates of PSP2, such as the shield swap on palletes, but PSU system is more fun for me. As far as synthing and leveling photon arts, I enjoy both.

The problem is that they weren't really balanced out and seriously just depend on luck. Getting 32%+ should be a lot more common than it is, and gun and tech PAs shouldn't be such a time consuming bitch to level. I did a mass synth back in summer 09 and only 4 things came out 36%+. 4 out of 32. What the fuck? Really? I quit for 2 months after that out of rage.

Anyway....I prefer PSU system with said tweaks.
