I really do wonder, do the idiots who produce these movies even know what they're doing? I doubt they read anything more than the title and MAYBE the first sentence of a chapter. The only similarities I could possibly find were names, but even some of that got messed with. For one, Percy's mom didn't change her name to "Ms. Ugliano"; She kept her maiden name. Grover wasn't that much of a badass. Percy was supposed to be 12. There was no gate at the top of Half-Blood Hill; There was Thalia's pine tree. Camp Half-Blood didn't have tents for each camper; They had 12 cabins, one for each of the Olympians. Grover also didn't need crutches; He walked awkardly, "like each step hurt him" to quote the first book, but he didn't have crutches. I'm fairly certain he had freckles, although that could've been Nancy Bobofit, who wasn't even mentioned in the movie. Ms. Dodds as a fury was horribly off track with the imagery; For one, her face was supposed to stay the same. For two, she was supposed to wear a leather jacket, which I don't remember seeing. I'm fairly certain they left out Percy's fight with Ares, which occurs because Percy wasn't "supposed to make it out of the Underwolrd alive." There was only one set of flying shoes, which Percy gave to Grover; Those shoes almost pulled Grover straight to the depths of Tartarus. Annabeth wasn't supposed to be a brunette; Again, to quote the book, "Annabeth sat at table five with a bunch of kids who had her honey blonde hair and gray eyes." She also recruited Percy for her team for capture the flag. Clarisse, a daughter of Ares, was absolutely nowhere to be found, either; She's a main rival of Percy. Chiron was supposed to be the only centaur at Camp Half-Blood, and his horse body was supposed to be a "white palamino", as I recall. Percy didn't get cut up by fighting Annabeth; Luke summoned a Hellhound from the Fields of Punishment, which attacked Percy; Chiron killed it, Percy stepped back into the water, and Poseidon claimed him. They didn't go to the Lotus Hotel & Casino, or Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium for that matter, to retrieve the pearls; Percy received them as a gift in the Santa Monica bay from Neriad, the spirit of the sea. He doesn't even SEE the Hydra until the second book, "The Sea of Monsters". He doesn't leave Grover behind in the Underworld; He leaves his mother, and once Hades had his Helm of Darkness back, which was stolen by Luke along with Zeus' Master Bolt and was gotten back after Percy actually wounded Ares in their fight, he returned Sally Jackson to their apartment; The throne room for the Olympians wasn't filled with simple chairs, like the movie depicted; There were actually thrones. Poseidon's throne, for instance, was a deep-sea fisherman's throne. Zeus' throne was simple, yet solid platinum. Zeus and Poseidon were also the only two gods in the room when Percy returned the Master Bolt.

Honestly, I could go on, but I doubt anyone read all that. If you did, props and have a cookie.

I'll take the cookie, thanks.

To summarize, they butcher a lot of books when they turn them into movies. It seems the Percy Jackson books will be no different.

Uh, no. The other way around.

EDIT: To clarify, the books were first. I own all 5. There's also a 2nd series of the Camp Half-Blood books in the works, with the first book already out.

Book 1: The Lightning Thief.
Book 2: The Sea of Monsters.
Book 3: The Titan's Curse.
Book 4: The Battle of the Labyrinth.
Book 5: The Last Olympian.

Series two, Book 1: The Lost Hero.

Ok pal. I remember seeing the trailer for that movie. It wasn't on with the trailers for normal movies in theaters; it was one of those trailers + behind the scenes shit they show on loop before the trailers start, when you get to the theater just a little too early. That movie looked completely worthless, and because of it, I'm having a hard time imagining the books not being written by a 12 year old kid. Forgive me.

It's fine.
Honestly, though, they probably don't even read the book. Any of it. They just have the slightest idea of what it's based on, the title, and then they say something like "OK LET'S MAKE THIS A MOVIE!"

You all should know by now that 90% of movies based off of books, video games, or any other sort of media, deviate heavily from the original material.

Believe me I know. It's just sad.

Takes the cookie.

Budget/Time + Director, = Butchering.
It happens with all (mostly live action) movies. you got the directors point of view of how the movie wants to be directed. then you got budget and time. Somethings just can't be covered in the book within the run-time limit, and descriptions can be very costly to reproduce visually.

with all the obvious junk out of the way, I do agree after reading that some things could've been easily and inexpensively done the other way. by the looks of it, after reading your post, some things were just an inch off of what they should have been. It saddens me to see movies butchered to an extent such as this. I would've enjoyed the book's version much more and hoped for a sequel.
But the way the director worked with it doesn't feel like a sequel should be necessary. and after seeing the Hydra and other things, it felt like he summarized multiple books way to much.

You should never go into a movie that was a adapted from a book and expect it to be like the book.

You should be able to expect a movie "adapted" from a book to be more accurate than this, however.

Anyway, yes, I agree that there are some things are just a tad bit off and don't really matter, but that's just me being picky.

Other than that, there are plenty of things I understand as to not having been done, such as the thrones. That would cost a good deal more, I'd imagine. But the inclusion of all 12 of the gods on the in th throne room would cost more, wouldn't it? They'd have to hire more people, even if they're relatively minor roles in the movie. I don't deny the airfight scene was cool, but it also deviated enough that it would've costed less to leave that out and do other things.

Ah yes, that's right, I forgot about the huge lack of common sense that surrounds those who have it. Thank you, so very, very much.

Seriously, I know they deviate etc etc, but this isn't just deviation; This is twisting it to being almost beyond recognition, and as indicated by an earlier post in this topic, completely discouraging anyone from actually reading the books if they even saw a preview of the movie.
