Actually not a rant more of a thought i want to share. When i first played this game online it definitely blew me away and i was really enjoying my experiece with the game but ive just come to realise something... this game its nrrly alredy at its end only 2 servers are ever populated... Ive joined the experience way too late and also whilst i feel like this game has alot of new and improved feautures compared to the GC version i feel this game doesnt do enough to keep my attention. Also the subscription fee.... Now i actually dont think the guardians license is expensive. At all. 7 quid a month is chump change and it rlly isnt a hole burning in my wallet its just i dont think we shud be paying for this game. Its not even a proper MMO. The lobbys are awesome they allow you to meet other players chat and go on missions but basically you go to a loading screen find a mission and do missions with a small group of people now im not saying thats bad i mean 20 people in a mission would obvoiusly be too much. Its just compared to what MMO experiences like Runescape (yes i did just go there :P ) offer its not worth the asking price. Also when you think about it having a guardians license for a year is just as expensive as having xbox live for 2 years and you get a hell of alot more bang for your buck with xbl. The content in PSU is fun and theres alot to be enjoyed but its abit stale and isnt worth the asking price im not leaving for definite but im strongly thinking about cancelling my license. I will definitely miss PSU if i go but it probably would be saving me money to go towards brand new games...

I can understand your resentment towards an online fee, as there are many free online games. However, something to keep in mind is that there are practically NO fast action online RPGs like this. There is basically no competetition. Most are point/click.

Anyway, I get so much enjoyment out of this 1 game, it well justifies the cost. I actually have a huge collection of games I have yet to play. Don't get me wrong; I don't restrict myself to this one game. I play other games, but I often find myself coming back to this one.

If you enjoy the Universe experience but don't feel the fee is worth the value, check out their Portable series. Namely, Phantasy Star Portable 2. It features free online mode, similar to Universe. Not only that, but it has MANY new additions to the game.

It's worth checking out if you have a PSP.

Seems to me that you'd be a lot happier playing a MMO and not an ARPG like PSU judging from the many comparisons you made. Thing is, you're trying to compare to different genres here, which is why it doesn't match up right.

Now if you're truly unhappy with the game, then yeah it would probably be a good idea to quit and move to something that captures your interest better, Though I would like to mention that a lot of us are very happy that there is a subscription fee to play this game, as it keeps a majority of the little kids off the servers and that's one less headache to deal with.

The only thing I'd really correct, dont compare it to MMO's. Its not an MMO, it was never meant to be an MMO.

Never thought I'd see one of these threads again.

It also prevents you from actually having a populated server.

If it was free, how would SEGA get funds to maintain the servers?

Cash shops. Wait a second, aren't they already doing something like that on the superior server?

They could also make all their money up-front on the initial game sale, like most online games.

They do both. Subscription, and the GUARDIAN Cash shop.

I quit a long time ago and I'm happy I did. Like I stated before, I got tired of it and there was also that "I don't wanna look back on my life and say I played PSU for 5 years straight " or something ridiculous like such. Kinda embarrassed enough I played it for nearly 2 years.

Yeah, I quit PSU after playing for around 2 and a half years myself, mostly due to Sega being stupid with managing and updating the game: login errors with the MAG event, rollbacks due to poor coding, months without anything new despite Japan being a year ahead of us, etc. I came back once they announced that they were taking down the PC/PS2 servers, but only because they made it F2P during that time and because I wanted to be with some of the good friends I made on those servers. Had they only brought everything that was in Japan over here, I probably would've stuck with it. Either that, or if there was some sort of "choose your language" option or mod in the free course JP servers that changed all the in-game text to English so I could actually read through it (I'd like to learn Japanese, but not just for one game).

That said, it will be imperative for Sega to not make any of those same mistakes if PSO2 is to be successful outside of Japan. I think the PC-only approach is a good first step, but I'm not too keen on the initial Japanese-only Alpha testing. The game's still got a lot of development to go, so only time will tell.

That statement reflects a lot of PC/PS2 players, It surely reflects my friends and myself.

btw it was good to see you around at the end, and I hope we get a chance to play some PSO2 together!

I'm not defending PSU, but I wanted to say that if you learned japanese for PSU or any game in particular, it wouldn't just be for the one game.
Since you would comprehend japanese, and would be able to use it for anything.
Not just video games.
