View Full Version : More than just fighting?

If there was one thing I hated about PSO/PSU (in between many things I loved) was the lack of variety in stuff to do. While the combat is fun, it would have been nice to have more to do.

Such as Puzzles in quests, more Vehicle sections like from PSU, and little things just to make it seem more then. Fight, get new weapon, fight, rinse and repeat.

Maybe its just me.

What do you guys think?

Combat's the main thing to do in the PS series.

If there IS a mini-game type thing, I'm betting on some kind of puzzle platforming, with the jumping and sprinting and all. Races?

MAG farming broke the monotony for many.

It's just you.

Phantasy Star is a dungeon crawler. Fighting for loot sums that up quite well.

Then there was battle mode, to fight each other, and challenge mode, to fight as a team against time.

The one thing I can think of that can work as a mini-game is a shooting gallery. Ranger's new TFS gameplay would benefit in this.

MAG farming broke the monotony for many.

I probably cannot speak for Mag farmers everywhere, but I can say that Mag farming made repetitive mindless combat seem fun in comparison. That is why any farmer could make so much money off it. The only part of Mag farming that was mildly fun was the conversation with the three other farmers in the party, but it is easy to add conversation to any game.

Onto the main topic, I would not recommend doing much more than just fighting in a game that is marketed to players that enjoyed all the past just fighting games. If they were to add puzzles and such, I would not do much different than challenge mode and the group quests in the previous games. (E.g., just fight along a directed path given certain clues.)

There were several lobbies in the old PSO servers that has soccer fields. the soccer balls were huge models of the characters from chu chu rocket and had different visual effects when you scored a goal. But you basically played soccer in the lobbies.

I would LOVE to see something mid-mission, or anywhere in the game, that split up the battling.

Things like that make games feel far more complete and full, imo.

Raising MAGs, as boring as it was, was still like a minivans of sorts. I was never a fan of battle mode. Challenge was fun though. Maybe they will improve upon those in the new game.

You must not have done much outside of the same monster spam quests in PSO then. Battle mode was a different batch of combat since you were up against another player, though horribly implemented. There were a few quests that had other focuses outside of fighting too such as Rappy's Holiday, Garon's Treachery, Beach Laughter, etc. Challenge modes main focus was not only combat but puzzles as well. I would have loved it if more of challenge modes puzzles were implemented in the main game. There were also the soccer ball lobbies that were already mentioned which are good for a laugh or two. Anyway, I'm sure they will have far more to do than what I listed in PSO2.

I think someone in another thread mentioned something similar to the Chao activities from SA2 Battle. While I wouldn't like exactly the same thing, I believe that having some kind of medium where MAGs can be used outside of their item-based setting would be a good thing. Now, I think they could make the mini-games involving them more interactive; taking the idea from OLAF they could take place in some kind of racing mini-game.

But yeah, with MAGs there could be a good variety of games based on different stats. While again, I don't think their games should be the same as the Chao Garden's, there could still be mini-games that highlight different stats. That way there could be a good variety, as well as a reason to level MAGs of different stat distributions.

They should have an arcade...with game gear games in it or something, and a server highscore. :0

and a Card battle minigame system like finalfantasy 8 and 9(and I think 11 had it but it was a seperate game.) possibly reusing ep3's cards.

Of course, it would be a SEGA game, without a casino.

First fishing, then mining. I suppose textiles and alchemy are next. And before you know it, we'll have Lineage II with lobbies. PSO had a weird enough economy as is. But I'm all for mag monkey ball or other weird optional minigames that have no real impact on the game economy. What mag farming became on PSO is testament enough to what will end up happening.

I would disagree. The one great thing about PSO was that it was much more similiar to diablo than a real MMORPG. I am not saying that adding other things to make it more interesting would be bad, but they should just stick with the kill/loot concept as the main game mechanic for advancement.

However, if they were planning to switch the game more towards a MMORPG and made the world more seamless I would agree that adding other elements would be a great idea.

PSU and PSO's casinos could have had a LOT of mini game potential.

Angelic Fae

I gotta say as far as mini games are concerned PSU's were horrid. with exception to the casino though more casino games would have been nice. i'd like to see some card games in the casino. as for mini-games outside of that id love a chao style mini-game, hell chao are in the PS games its just asking to happen!

But all an all I reckon they should focus on only a few really well made mini's rather than a whole load of bad games.

I hope PSO2 brings back the Nights mini game and some unique quests, and put in some quests based on the original Phantasy Star rpgs, like a special map that resembles the Bio Lab from Phantasy Star II, complete with PsII bio-monsters and classic Ps music.

I'm all for this. It'd be an interesting way to bring in a part of PSO we often overlook due to the music of the game. And it'd definately break away from the usual form of combat we always get.

At first i thought you guys were talking about mission-specific things that didn't involve fighting. You know, like PSO-style Challenge Mode puzzles, or something.

Fishing? Mining? Crafting? Fuck no, this isn't Final Fantasy XIV, and if it ever becomes anything close to it, it's going to fail just as hard as it is. Only time i'd be cool with that is if it was a VERY well fleshed-out departure.

Someone mentioned the Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle -- PERFECT example. If something like that was implemented, nobody could complain. The Chao Garden extended replay value of SA2 to hundreds of hours.

Chaobo99
May 8, 2011, 10:37 PM
I'm assuming PSO2 takes place sometime after EpIII? So implementing C.A.R.D. as a something on the side would make sense, even to the story(line). Perhaps shops that sell booster packs and what not.
And yes, I am all for the Chao Garden! ... hence the title @.@

Tetsaru
May 9, 2011, 03:29 AM
I like the C.A.R.D. mini-game idea, and although I also like the Chao Garden idea too, I don't really see how it would tie into PSO2 unless there was some sort of reward or quest system involved with it. Sure, in the Sonic Adventure games, you could raise Chao's for racing and fighting, but in the end, all it did was earn you Emblems. The appearance of Chao's (or "Jaggos") in PSU as rare enemies just seemed like a cool Easter Egg, although I'd love to see them again in PSO2.

As for the whole crafting/mining/fishing/etc. stuff, personally, I wouldn't mind having that kind of stuff if it was optional, as it would give people something else to do and work towards. I hated how in PSU, all you did was spam PA's against monsters in nearly every mission, unless it was event-related, and being able to do things like that would provide a nice departure from that, so long as there wasn't any similar bullshit synthing/grinding systems like PSU had that would make it too frustrating. I might be a bit biased towards this though: several of my friends have been playing FFXIV for a while now, and I've been wanting to try it myself while it's still F2P... I just don't have a computer that can run it. :(

NoiseHERO

We already had crafting, and probably will have it again.

Mining is a just another time consuming scam.

Fishing can fit into and be accepted in any game so long as it's not the same as typical mmo mining.

That is what PSO "was" known for... But it looks like they are taking a new approach to the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they added other things to do.

I really enjoy the thrill of spending weeks looking for that one special item. Or doing Challenge mode with friends.

I really hope they add interactive quests or something else, but I'll be happy as long as they don't let those damn cheaters / hackers ruin this game like they did every other PSO.
