The official website was updated today. There's not a whole lot of new info but there was a whole lot of screenshots, some old, some new, posted:

I posted these here because you can see item drops. The items include a sword, a disk of some kind and a canister. I would bet the disk is a PA disk. If the swords repesent weapons, it could mean that PSU's synthing system may be gone. More screenshots at the link above.

EDIT:
Gasp, I missed the game concept part of the update. Forgive me if this old info, but here goes.

There are multiparty quests in addition to multiparty areas.
Items and techs can be linked to the number keys (called the sub-palette)
Lip color can be changed in character create

There is probably more new info in there but I'm still at work and can't spend much time on it.

I like that style of item drop. It suits the overall fell of the game, I think. Looks good.

My money is on the canister being a healing item.

I hope that "rare" items look different. I also hope that they keep the noise (not the exact same noise, but the premise of the noise) that rare drops made from PSP2/i.

Personally I prefer the good old item cubes, but this ain't bad.

So the drops are represented in the same fashion as PSU.

The canister most likely represents items like mates and such.

Not seeing how pure weapon drops means Synthesizing is out, PSU has both now. (While pure drops in JP being much more dominant  )

If the Drops represent what it is (Generic Sword for Sword, Generic Saber for Saber, etc) I think it'll be pretty good, though some may say it ruins the surprise.

Could. It's been a long time since I played PSU so it may have changed but I don't remember getting that many weapon drops in an area like shown in the screenshot in PSU. Can't rule it out yet but that many drops in that small an area could mean it's gone. Just one of the many possibilities.

I guess this confirms that you only need to link techs to weapons for the charging aspect. This also means that Rods and other FO weapons will have a much grander use this time around.

The players may have dropped some items on purpose for sake of the screenshot, too. However, if that's not the case, I'm sure that the only weapons that will be dropping in that quantity will be fairly low-end.

Well I finally found something I don't like. Imagine that. I don't mean to cry but I dislike the joints the Cast have.

Edit: Although now that I think about it, I doubt I would pay much attention to the joints ingame. Save for long waiting times.

Kinda rare to get that many, (In lower ranks much easier to see it like this though) if anything says no synthesizing, not seeing anything that could represent materials is one...

Also if you look at the second screenshot there is Meseta drops nearly everywhere, could be for the sake of screenshot purposes, or this PSE Burst drop boost boost is that good?

Anyway, oh hey look it's a HUcaseal:

Yes, Lip color!

And I just noticed, in one of the screens the Ramar has the same unit as the purple nurse from a couple days ago, but his unit is white while hers was purple. So is it possible that units will have the same color you give your outfit? If so, that would be awesome, because like that you wouldn't have to worry about an unit not fitting with your outfit.

Yeah, i would have been surprised if it was any other way. I figured it would go this route because there would be no other reason for them to specify the use of linkage and rods like they were.

I dont really like the way the dropped items look. I prefer the box method, honestly.

Looking at the screenshots, they've improved the facial models on the characters alot since that first gameplay video.

Something people might have missed about the units. She said that only the high-ranking ones will be visible.

I'd complain about the flat photon color, but honestly i'd take anything over PSU's bloom effect. It looks like it has its own glow in-game, but the solid color really does look odd at times. Im expecting to change later, honestly.

Could. It's been a long time since I played PSU so it may have changed but I don't remember getting that many weapon drops in an area like shown in the screenshot in PSU. Can't rule it out yet but that many drops in that small an area could mean it's gone. Just one of the many possibilities."drastic synthesis overhaul" was included in the first trailer. PSU's system is probably out, but it's being replaced with another.

Im hoping for a PSO+PSU style, where some weapons will drop with abilities, or you can take a current weapon and combine it with stuff to make your own. Synthesis systems are some of the quickest ways for MMOs to go from great to bullshit, though.

That is quite clearly the waist down to the mid-thighs showcasing a pair of pixelated purple panties.

That kind of thing is top priority at SEGA.

I'm pretty sure that censored part is panties.

On the units, it reminds me of those Mech designs have a ton of "useless" stuff protruding out of the Mech for the "cool factor."

Wow, more pictures already? Sakai and his team must be making good progress... let's hope so. It'd be nice to see some actual communication between the dev's and players for once, unlike PSU.

I'm not so sure about the new item drop icons... they seem rather generic. The whole "zomg red box" thing became an indelible part of this franchise to me, and I'd hate to see it go. That, and being able to see what kind of item it is before you pick it up does kinda ruin the suspense. I guess you'd at least be able to tell if it was a Photon Drop or Kerseline more easily, though.

The spiky RAmar gear looks kinda redonkulous, lol. Might look better on a Cast, though.

.....what? Turnips are good for you.
Some people would probably be surprised to find that pickled turnips are absolutely freaking delicious in sandwiches and wraps. They're in Mediterranean food a lot, can usually be found in any mediterranean store (I'm lucky enough to live near a city with plenty of ethnicities, we celebrate it to, ethnic fall festivals everywhere and one really huge one, Festival of Nations, that we have each year. Food and shows from everywhere, usually performed by actual immigrants or their next of kin.) Also, they're an awesome intense bright purple.

Anyways, more on topic:

Not to crazy about item icons. I like spinny-boxes personally, but it's not a big deal.

Also, I'm wondering if we'll get the option to turn unit visibility on/off. I doubt it'd really be that hard of an option to add. Could probably go right next to removing particle effects or whatever.

2. Rangers can use the jump action to get on to high ground and snipe enemies
3. The AOE of some techniques is increased if used while jumping

That hunter is probably just in mid jump, but if he's actually running on the top of that thing, holy balls. That could mean bosses with weak points you have to jump up to hit. That'd be a pretty bad ass platforming element for an action MMO.

Didn't you watch the new gameplay video? You can jump on large enemies.

And it's been confirmed that many enemies have weakpoints on their back/above them.

Apparently, the Units color matches your character's secondary color.

Lol...I actually thought the units made the ramar look cooler...

My taste in fashion seems to be the complete opposite of this board (thank gawd 8D )

Lots of people here just seem to believe that Phantasy Star is a dressup game first and a videogame second. They already posted that a majority of the units (low ranking) will not be visible anyway.

The thought of a high-ranking character distinguishing themselves from those wearing low-ranking armor is apparently not a good idea anymore. :-?

I dunno why people are freaking out about it. Don't like how a unit looks? Don't use it.

Plus with the right combination of units, it can look decent and not cluttered at all:
http://bumped.org/psublog/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Humar-units.jpg

But if you choose the wrong ones....... You get this:
http://bumped.org/psublog/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/newman-pso2.jpg

That's only the arm/leg units. x_X Which looks fine, but.... I don't even want to think about what it would look like with a large back unit and a sheathed sword....

I dont know how many times i have to remind people that the woman who posted the pictures said that only the HIGH ranking units will be visible.

So, essentally, it's probably going to be like PSO, where only specific rares will upgrade you. Oddly enough, i dont remember anyone ever complaining about that Honeycomb thing, or the Standstill shield, or whatever.

Im guessing that if this game was PSU, then A rank units and up would be visible. I think its a great substitute to the full outfit changing, which i would agree i probably wouldnt like very much.

But nobody is going to give these guys any credit on this idea, because they're too busy crying about it.

And if those Hunewearl's units were actually a form of weapon (kind of like Godhand from PSO, a fist with no graphic), then it'd be really awesome. If unarmed combat is in the game, im going to take my weapons off and fight barehanded with those units on.

She DOES look a bit ridiculous...but honestly, i'd get over it within 10 minutes of equipping it.

I completely agree. I though that they'd look pretty awesome if it was a new weapon type that involves a bunch of agile movements... Like a bunch of quick swaying motions with the arms/legs. Think a pair of daggers on crack.

Appearance is absolutely my #1 priority in MMOs. I will refuse to play any online RPG that does not let me build a character I am happy with.

On my "MMO hierarchy of needs", it goes like this:

1. Avatar
2. Stability/performance (FFXIV failed spectacularly here)
3. Combat
4. Progression
5. Content
6. RP fluff

Obviously, if the first layer is lacking, I will immediately quit. Simple as. It's the reason I quit Age of Conan even though I found the gameplay itself quite adequate, it's why I quit EQ2 (worst armor models EVER), and why I continue to stick it out with Champions Online and Aion despite both those games being utterly rife with problems.

So, when I have to make a trade-off between my avatar's looks and combat ability, I will call it a forced choice, because it is completely unnecessary that I have to make such a choice to begin with.

I imagine the fact that this hasn't caught on with the general MMO-playing populace is simply because WoW STILL doesn't have appearance slots or modification (and, in fact, has some of the shittiest character customization of any MMORPG still running today).

I agree with Zyrusticae to an extent. I too put appearance over everything else. But, I do not take it to the extreme of simply not giving a game a chance if it's not 100% how I want it. Rather, I weigh the good and the bad. So far, I've got

Good:

-Complete customization freedom (which basically entails all the good points into one, for simplicity).

Bad:

-Some units show on your character, and may throw off a certain "look" you were going for.

The "unit" thing isn't really that bad. I can suffer through that quite easily. However, if PSO2's character creation wasn't even close to what it is right now (i.e: it sucked) only then would I consider not purchasing the game. But, it's not like that, so I'm perfectly content. Can't have everything we want.

Seriously, though, like I said, it's a hierarchy of needs that I, personally, possess. Your hierarchy is obviously going to be completely different from my own.

Appearance is a basic requirement for me. You probably have something else that is a basic requirement that needs to be met before you'll even consider playing a game. Our priorities are completely different, and you don't need to put in any more effort to understand it than that.

Also, telling me to go play with a doll generator is entirely pointless. Again, the customization is just the FIRST requirement before I decide to play a game. Once that need is met, then I consider the rest of the game's elements. If a game has no combat whatsoever, I'm probably not going to look any further at it. So no, I don't think a doll game is for me. ;-)

What's the problem with caring how your characters look? Everyone has their own priorities video games, and whatever it is, doesn't mean that they care about the other aspects any less.

In fact, my avatar's appearance is a priority to me; not number 1, but way up there. If he looked like bullshit, i prolly wouldn't play the game, but that's never the case. I don't see 'shallow' anywhere in his priorities.

But I do see TROLL right now.

No matter how many customization there is in the end, I sure do hope they will let you revamp your character at any given time without a fee, at least body height, parts and shape.

Creating a character can start well but once you entered the actual game you notice that height and shape simply doesn't feel right, at all.
Now what did you have to do in PSU? Delete your character and make a new one.
In PSP2i? Accumulate huge amounts of money before you chould change.

It was a turn-off, really, and I hope they realized that.

Appearance is my biggest concern in these games as well... <.< Although, I don't need a 1000 options to make a character look "good" to me. But if the options are crappy/limited enough, I wont be interested.

But yeah, like Olaf said, considering how much pure character customization there is in this game, units don't seem like a big deal. And I'm POSITIVE that Zyrusticae would be able to find at least one set that he likes.

Look, if I cannot identify with my avatar - if it feels like the avatar is not my own, but one provided to me by the developers - then there is a fundamental disconnect I feel with the gameplay. ESPECIALLY when it's fully third-person (not an issue with first-person games for obvious reasons).

I can't feel invested or motivated in improving my character when I'm not happy with how my character represents me (which is what an avatar is supposed to do, btw). Since I might spend hundreds or even thousands of hours looking at my character fight over the course of normal gameplay, it's pretty damn important that I feel a connection there.

No connection, no investment, no can-do. Simple as.

Character creation top for me as well...

I like playing as my characters in online games, not the game's characters. which is why I usually steer far clear away from games that think it's an awesome Idea to expect people to play with a 1 gender 1 weapon 1 race 1 appearance specific class.

Normally I don't expect much, and this unit thing doesn't really bug me at all. But any sign of downgrading from PSU kinda breaks my balls a little. But if the unit thing gets TOO bad... then it's no different from having level based armor... Hunewearl's was kind pushing it, but we don't know the stats of them yet.

And yeah I was truly never ever fond of the "EVERY ONLINE GAME MUST HAVE 20 DIFFERENT KINDS OF WINGS" thing, so if I have to have 8 robotic mechanical batwings, and so do 900 other people just because I'm lvl 200 or something to have the best stats I can get...

I guess I'm not gonna have the best stats I can get. :0

Again, my hierarchy of needs is almost exclusively limited to MMOs and ORPGs.

I don't give a shit about having an avatar in Starcraft 2 or Batman: Arkham Asylum, because the game isn't about me - it's about Jim Raynor, or The Goddamn Batman. If it makes you feel better, I can completely understand where you're coming from. I love the customization in Champions Online, and the customization they showed for PSO2. I can see why someone would want the ability to stand out - I mean, so many RPGs have characters that stand out in one way or another, and if you view it from the perspective that your character is the main focal point (at least to yourself) then it makes sense that they would want to stand out. I mean, everyone on this earth is unique in their own way - why shouldn't games give us just as much choice?

People sure are touchy on this website. Anyways, despite this hoopla about unit looks, I was more excited about the confirmation of techs are not bound to weapons(I HATED that about PSU). That alone increases my hype level tenfold. Which is bad, because there isn't much information to go off of, and its still some time before TGS. :(

I think he's talking more about concrete in the sense of things being finalized - I mean, this is going in to Alpha, so there is the possibility that things that have been announced will change (and in the case of some things [SERVERS], I hope they do), so while, yes, we do have information about what's been confirmed, we also have the reality that some of that is subject to change, for better or for worse.

Hah, True. A lot of the general framework of the game has been talked about, but its still vague at this point. I usually try to avoid getting hyped about a game that is still a ways out, but those new videos are crazy good.

I guess I'm content with the information at the moment, but the mere mention of things like skill trees, non weapon based techs, multi parties, etc. has me in a froth for more. Guess we'll have to see.

I know I 'complained' about it being more like PSP2 than the original PSO on another forum at first (I like the concept of HUnewearl as a class, as well as the stat breakdowns, more than a generic -newearl that could class swap to whichever), but after playing PSP2 and reading these boards I'm really looking forward to more info on PSO2. I'd imagine a HUmarl would my choice atm, but who knows? Speculation's been running rampart with everyone, as is the norm with big potential releases like this.

I just hope it doesn't go the way FFXIV did. For all the hype and excitement about that game...it really got bashed. Have a 30+ gladiator, but they nerfed any chance of me making a paladin-esque build....

ANYWAYS! 1) I do agree with wishing they'd bring back the rainbow boxes + happy rare noise from PSP2

2) I know at least one man who would be extra happy to have a RAcast with a bulge, and I don't mean Ark.

I know this is off-topic, but I'm not really sure what you mean. I play Gladiator/Sentinel on FFXIV as well, and there's plenty of Paladin-esque moves: tanking abilities (Provoke, Taunt, War Drum, Sentinel, Rampart, Aegis Boon, Obsess, Defender, Deflection, Shield Bash, Phalanx) and support magic (Cure, Sacrifice/Regen, Protect, Shell, Stoneskin, Shock Spikes, Punishing Barbs). Granted, you have to level up other jobs to get most of these moves, but it can still be done; I still need to level up Marauder for more enmity generation, and finish leveling up Conjurer and Thaumaturge for some higher-tier support magic. From there, it's just a matter of maxing out your Vitality, getting some proper equipment (around Lv30, things like Frostbite or Flametongue, Conquistador's Elmo, Shield of the Savage or a Bronze Scutum, Kokoroon's Scale Mail, etc.), and using your abilities effectively to hold enemy hate and keep yourself and your party alive. I'm not sure how much more Paladin-like you can get than that, lol.

I agree with Tet. FF14 may not have the luster due to poor promotion and release techniques but it's certainly shaping up to be a more... desirable game under its new management.

Unfortunately because of the extreme sour taste in most people's mouths the bad word has already been spread and it won't be given the chance it deserves when it becomes pay-to-play.

I know I won't be playing it, but that's partially because of limited time, my excitement for PSO2, and my bias towards FF11 and it's lovely Vana'diel.
