so a little while back a 3DS game called "Beyond the Labyrinth" was announced like this

This made me think hey, it looks like it could be on an tone level with Ico and a great open adventure with a gorgeously crafted world. the screenshots also led me to this conclusion

and then what do the developers tell us... wait for it wait for it... then the game developers tell us that it is a first person, grid based dungeon crawler... like etrian odyssey (which is admittedly a great game perfectly suited for the genre). Anyone else feel a bit let down by this reveal, for me it was a game that could have really gotten me intrigued, with a gorgeous art style and a big labyrinth to explore freely, that was then taken and thrown into a genericy machine to pop out what they gave us.

Not really. Have been following this on Siliconera ever since the first day it was annouced.
Already knew it was a first person grid based dungeon crawler and I'm extremelly interested in it of course.
And tri-Ace being the developer and Motoi Sakuraba doing the music, I already had a general idea what kind of game it would be.

Love dungeon crawlers and like the look of this (plus it's tri-ace), too bad my choices are:

1. Buy an English 3DS, hope it gets localized, still be screwed out of other future games that I'll want that won't be localized (Class of Heroes 3D for instance)
2. Buy a JP 3DS and get raped on prices for every single game.
3. Buy a 3DS for each region...

It doesn't get said often enough, fuck region locking and fuck Nintendo.

So is it like...uhm...

I'm assuming it works like a really oldass game, but it's extra cinematic or something?

I don't see a problem, though something more zelda like would sound more relevant it also wouldn't be very original.

Though it doesn't look like the type of game I'd buy. Play but not buy.

Everyone region locks, but it used to be awesomely convenient that that wasn't an issue with handhelds...

It used to be.

DS is region free :disapprove:. Don't regress on us, Nintendo.

I suppose PSP is too, at least if you hack it, if nothing else (don't know if it is normally).

DS is region free, DSi enhanced games are locked. GBA was region free too.
PSP and Vita are region free.
PS3 is region free.
360 has some bizarre up to the publisher to decide arrangement. But who buys a 360 for non-American games now that it's failed so badly in Japan and excelled exclusively in the West.
Wii is not (easily hacked at least)

This generation had a pretty good thing going.

Didn't know PS3 was region free, guess that'd be a good thing for people that still care about JRPG's and know their way around the language. (Actually knowing it, and or I dunno if people make english patches or that jailbreak crap-whatever no I dunno.)

Well, we already know the 3DS is region-locked... I imagine the same thing will happen with the WiiU.

As to why the 3DS is region-locked, I still don't understand that decision considering now Nintendo handheld had been region-locked before. I do wonder if it was a way to convince all the big Hollywood content-providers that it'll be safer for them to release their films for the 3DS, but as far as I know those plans were for all digital content which was region-locked on the DSi anyway.
