View Full Version : I need some peoples advice on a purchasing decision

Well in January I finally was able to buy some video games systems, i had been a broke college kid for a long time, and because I got a higher paying job I went all out and bought a PS2, NGC, and a DC.
I was never much of a RPG fan. My fav games fell along the lines of 2D Fighters, FPS for the PC(avp2 rules), and any type of futuristic game(metroid for NGC=amazing).
However just last week I poped in a burned copy of PS0 for DC, I was bored, was a burned copy, knowing i can't go online without valid serial I decided to check it out in offlines mode.
I am blown away, usually i hate RPG's but this is different from most other rpg's i have played. So yea now I am addicted. So where do I go from here?
I have multiple options and need some advice. How are the seganet servers going? For the dreamcast about how many people are playing PSOv1 or v2? and also do either v1 or v2 have subscription fees?
Also how is the gamecube PSO comunity going?
Any information would be helpful. I am a noob yes, but gotta start somewhere. And I know a lot more people that would love this game. So let me know what you think I should do here.
Thanx, -LordNikon

PSO DC v1 : Free online
PSO DC v2 : about $15 for 3 month
Keyboard cheap and widespread.
Not many people online.(but quite enough to play with)
PSO GC : $9 a month
Modem or BBA : $49 (I think)
4 chars saved per memory card
lots of people online
Keyboard expensive and scarce. (getting better with the launch of Us ones)
just in case: PSO gets out on Xbox too.(voice chat and PC keyboard adapter supplied)

the dreamcastservers are not that populated these days i heard and with v1 you can play with v2-people also - just not their additional modes like ultimate-difficulty, battle and challenge.
most are just on to do challengemode all time or for chatting, so you will have some hard time to actually find someone who plays a game you can join (i mean, non-ultimate, non-challenge, non-battle...).
if you want to spend as less money as possible, go with v1 but dont expect too much.
if you can afford hl (and seeing you have a cube allready) i'd say go for v3 (ep1&2).
v2 is not really worth it in your case.
good luck on your decision ^_^

I would definetley go with GC Ep I & II online. It'll be worth the money AND you get a one month trial for free then after that one month you start paying the $9.00 a month fee.

Ok so I made a decision. Since design work is a bit slow at the moment and I gotta finalize a massive vinyl record order, I am gonna go the PSOv1 DC route, however probobly going to convert to cube PSO in the coming month or so.
SO I just ordered an OEM PSO for dreamcast off amazon...sealed and in the packaging for 25 bux http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif.
So this is to kinda hold me off for the next month or 2 till i can get it for game cube.
I am in an irc channel where like 80% of the people in there own dreamcasts. Most people I know don't even realize that there are all these servers for quake, ut, pso, and outtrigger etc etc etc still online. And a lot have never played PSO before. SO i am working on rallying everyone up to get some games and to get some gaming going.
I have one friend already who has a BBA and an OEM of PSO for dreamcast and is going to play with me online.
Then probobly around mid summer I am gonna get a full setup for my cube. PSO ep1&2 for cube, and the netplay keyboard(I hope they make more i really need one that are so sweet), then also a 5.6" LCD or a vga box for my cube so i can have it next ot my PC monitor.
Thanx for the helpful information on my decision you all helped a ton.
Also on a side note. I think dreamcast is the most capable system right now for online play, over 24 games are currently playable online for the dreamcast, far more than ps2 or xbox. Most people would be more than willing to play, if they KNEW others were gonna be playing also. I am gonna be setting up some side forums to organize online dreamcast play on all the current games that are still available to play online. I'll post the url in the next day or so in this topic, once I have them up. Then in case anyone here wants to break out their casts and throw down http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
So i got PSO for DC coming in the mail, and gonna play that for a month or so online with a couple friends. And then i am gonna get the NGC setup and pay monthly.
Thanx again for the helpful information.
Glad to be a part of the community

Well I thought I would add a little update to this massively old thread. This was the first thread I created here at PSOW. This was when I was first getting into PSO.
As stated above I started playing DC PSO version 1. The experience was great and I met tons of friends and played with many Dreamcast online gamers I started becoming good pals with.
I started GameCube PSO June 1st.
I continued to play Dreamcast PSO up until Oberon's shutdown on Oct. 1st. Just to let you all know, I successfully lvled my HUcast on DCv1 to Lv100 on Saturday Sept. 27th, before the shutdown. I lvled him online with friends in Nightmare #4 Ruins. Not only this, but I was able to snapshot the level IN PROGRESS as it happened.(amazing pic!!!!)
Check it out at the following URL:

This character was 100% legit, and I never accepted any items from anyone. Not 1 corruption or FSOD. 7 months I played Dreamcast v1 PSO, and lvled him to Lv100 before shutdown.
A gaming moment I will never forget.

Congratulations on your achievement buddy. Had my fair share of 3 Lv100 characters on Dreamcast v1. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Hey nice pic.
Was the "purple" saber in the pic a "Yamigarasu"? or "Lavis Cannon"?
Because if you were only Version 1 DC, you couldn't have been able to see a Version 2 DC weapon(Yamigarasu,Red Handgun, etc.), right? or am I wrong/missing something here?
Maybe a Version 2 player took that picture?
