Also as a side note, I stumbled upon this text on the site.

" If "2 α2 test Phantasy Star Online" has been installed, please uninstall it before installing this software."

Just in case those that were in the second Alpha test are getting this.

You do have to run a setup before using it. Just keep hitting what looks like the forward/net button. you might need to change one of the select buttons at one point.

I'm surprised the servers aren't getting hit hard yet. Seems easy enough to start the download at a decent speed from the main site.

I'm getting about ~250 kbps on the main link. For my ghetto broadband, that's actually pretty good. I'm about halfway done. Ooo, so close, I can taste it, yet I can barely do anything to pass the time without shooting my download rate to hell.

Shadownami92

I only have 9 minutes left on my download :D 52% finished.

Also it seems like this is how the main option menu will look.

1. Benchmark
2. Character Creator
3. ???
4. ???

Don't know options 3 or 4, maybe it will be Settings and then a Quit option?

I'm getting 450kbps personally.

When it first installs it auto set to high.

Click to icon on the destop, second option down.

Then third/fourth tab on the top.

You see a box with three options and next to it a box with two options.

Top in the First Box is High, After it's Medium, Bottom is Low.

Try the lowest and see what you get, has to be done before launching the game.

----------------------
Second/Third Tab is Window Settings

First Box is Window Mode or Full Screen.

The drop boxes are pretty self-explanatory.

-----------------------------------------
Fourth/Fifth Tab is Audio Options.

-------------------------
Still working out the other stuff.

2.6k on High. Haven't tried other settings yet. I'm happy with that, I guess. Though I'm not sure what part of my system is the bottleneck. The processor's probably the oldest component, but it's still decent for what it is.

I think I grossly underestimated how much an obstacle the moonrunes would be in using the character creator. I'm sooo confused, and I'm loving every minute of it.

I got the saving and everything down, but how do I make him appear on the benchmark is the question.

Olaf to save your character, the 2nd to last sub topic, the first one is to save, you have to enter a name and the one underneath that choice is to load, you have to click on the name.

When you go click the EXE hit the 2nd option to go to settings.

Look at the tabs on top

3rd tab is for resolution, gotta be dumb not to see the numbers haha. 1st box is for TOP windows and bottom for FULL screen, the 2nd is resolution while the third is an independent resolution I guess, ALL I CAN SAY is use the 2nd box to change window size.

4th tab has two boxes, I assume the one on the right, top is HD and bottom is not HD. The box on the right going from top to bottom is High, med and low. Still looks awesome without the HD.

5th box is audio

I got 7000 on high settings no hd, hd and high settings I got 648 xD

Max settings at the most absolute low reso is 2000 for me.

From what I can tell it changes the resolution of the textures, not shaders.

Shadownami92
Apr 5, 2012, 04:14 AM
From what I can tell it practically gets rid of all the fancy shaders. This includes the ripples from the ship's exhaust and most of the normal mapping. Looks like it's pretty much just flat shaded in SD mode. I'm sure it drops the texture resolution too, but that's the main think I noticed. It also looks like the specular maps aren't used in lots of the models for SD mode.

After running the benchmark a few times, here's what I got:

Default settings: 33286

1680x1050 resolution, HD, shaders at 3 (medium), windowed mode: 15831

1680x1050 resolution, HD, shaders at 5 (max), windowed mode: 10313

I love my new PC. :D I'd run it at 1080p, but my monitor doesn't support it, sadly...

My scores on the benchmark

LOW: 99999 (PERFECT LOL!)
MID: 20567
HIGH: 14080

All at a resolution of 1920x1080

Specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), OC'd @ ~3.8GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM ( 8GB )
2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 running in SLi
Western Digital Caviler Black HDD 1TB

pretty sure you'll be able to play the game on lowest settings if you also make sure you go like 640x400 or whatever the smallest resolution is. ofc playing in that resolution on window mode is difficult but most games and i'm sure pso2 will do this, allow you to play 640x400 full screen.

having such a small resolution takes -loads- of pressure off the computer.

btw, the character customization of this game is blowing my mind.

MY FAVORITE PART IS HOW ACCESSORIES STACK OVER ACCESSORIES AKA YOU CAN HAVE THREE SUNGLASSES ON OR MULTIPLE HATS

and seriously the comedic characters you can create using this is hilaaaaaaaaaarious, it's reaching the level of super mario 64 faces.

You have to completely finish making your character.

Make sure you hit this button.

Put in your name.
Edit: Brought to my attention by Mike, you are actually putting the name of the file present in, so make sure to use a different one each time.
The files are located at "[User]\Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLINE2

Load it, Save it under Another Name.

Exit

Delete Original Character Name out of Sega Documents Folder (keep the random name version).

Reload Client>Reload Character under Random Name.

Tweak with them>Save under Original Name Again.

well sine my screen isnt hd, disabling that is a good idea, also got a good performance making the shaders go to 1, anyway with shaders on 1 i get like 6000 with shaders on max i get 800
halfway i get 1000, so in my case the shaders are the ones to blame for performance i guess.

I noticed that the program crashed on me a few times in the character creator. I remember one time it happened when I was trying to move the window around, but I have no idea if that's the cause.

Also, for those who accidently hit the Random button, there is an undo button at the bottom right of the screen.
Ctrl + Z also works.

Kind of off topic? Updating my drivers gave me an 800 point boost on the highest settings. Wow.

I'm still using 260.99 NVidia drivers as they're the most stable, but I"ll probably look into some other ones as we get closer to release.

The full screen mode crashes when you click outside of it (on a secondary screen for example), I remember this NOT happening on the second alpha. It will crash on my TV too, unlike in the alpha as well, but in my monitor it works like a charm. Anyway it's strange because it crashes on the PC of a friend of mine on full screen, and I believe this is an error that was not present on the alpha test.

Ugh, due to my school requiring us to get Macs (meaning I got a "new laptop" two years ago), my parents won't let me buy a new computer, even with my own money.

What I'm using right now is a 4-year old Vaio C-series. Its specs are fine, but the lack of a NVidia card is killing just about every game I try to play. Google says upgrading the graphics card is like performing heart surgery. Ugh. :/

Edit: Whoa, wrong topic. xD Whatever.

ill be blunt, your money right? unless its needed for something else thats actualy important. use it, its yours, but get a destop youll get a decent machine for allot cheaper.

Nah wasn't clicking out of the window or anything and it crashes my pc entirely, not just the creator.

Short character creator guide. (http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-the-character-creator-demo-is-up-plus-mini-guide/)

Those who dont like to click forum download links:
The character creator is located at the news link on information: http://pso2.jp/
Then it goes straight to the http://pso2.jp/benchmark/ Dowload is at 3. window.

Well still downloading it... just woke up.

Why should the lack of a Nvidia card do anything worse? A AMD card can do just as well, although in the mind of most JP devs only Nvidia does exist. Min requirement Nvidia card... recommended Nvidia card... where is AMD? XD...

Uhm wow, either I'm doing everything wrong or my Laptop is sure not suited for the Game. Lol. On low settings the best I got was 622. <__< (It ran constantly only on 20~30 fps. T___T)
I looked if I can update my Drivers, but it said they're up to date. (I'm not really good with computers anyway, excuse my noobishness...)
Is there something I can still try or can I take this as my end score? (Which really isn't good. *sobsobsob*)

Yeah most laptops aren't made for graphics like gaming. You need at least a discrete gfx card in your laptop to do med-high in most games.

Desktop are easier to upgrade and cheaper too by almost 50% to get the similar performance from a laptop.

Yeah you need to create your character, then run the benchmark, if you exit the game the character reverts back to pre set one, I think it basically works on the last character you created. so If you want to run the benchmark again with your first character, then just load that character's preset and just name it something else, then run benchmark you can always go back to your folder and delete any duplicate characters.

I also don't understand why would people want the game to crash when exiting full screen, so now if you want to use other programs while running pso2, you can only do it in windowed mode.

I haven't got to play with it yet, (will after work) try hitting Alt+Enter, that usually works on 99% of games in the world.

EDIT: For full screen that is.

for the resolution if its anything like the alpha client you can select the resolution in the settings.

So serious question, ignore it and I'll ask it multiple times in other threads.

I notice that even if I get a low score on the benchmarking, the "game" still seems to fun fine (a number of different settings.) Extremely low settings and I'm like UP there, I flick on HD and I can barely make 2000.

But the question is... if I'm playing the full game (or alpha/beta whatever) What would be the real punishment of playing this game on settings that don't reach past 2000 regardless of the benchmark score?

Is it like really a bad idea? Or is it just recommended? Or both... either way, why?

I manage to load up the creator just fine but if I try to enter the character creation the game just gives me an error message saying it can no longer run. I'm on a laptop but its pretty much brand new minus a few months.

I have a massive list of drivers to update on the laptops manufacturer website but I'm not sure which ones i actually need to run it if any at all.

Honestly, a score in the 1500s will probably work perfectly fine. I played the second alpha with the graphics turned up and didn't really have any graphical lag. When I ran the benchmark, I originally had 1530 or so. But I suppose you should fine tune your settings as needed.

You'll probably be fine. Generally, benchmarks are there to just push yours system hardcore so the you can see if you can run the game in it's most extreme setting (notice how the frames were shot.. the heavy rain/fmv-like scenes.. a lot of crap going on in the scenes at once, etc) so it stresses it on purpose. 1500-2000 will probably be fine.

Try dropping the slider to 1, and then going to the 4th tab and switch both of those selections to the bottom (for simple textures/etc)

Real "full screen" is bothering me a lot... big performance hit when switching from windowed to full screen.

Now I wish they kept the fake "full screen" that they had in Alpha-2... I hope there will be some option to toggle this, but it doesn't look like it. We need to send some suggestions to bring it back!!

While the performance for me is the same at full screen or window mode (max settings, 1440x900), I also wish they kept the fake full screen from the alpha 2, since now alt-tabbing while in full screen crashes the game, like PSU... ._.

Still working out the other stuff.

I threw up a very quick guide to the options, it might be of use to some people until Ricardo finishes translating it. idk I did it for my friend who knows nothing of Japanese. The link is in my sig.

Also I seem to get a way higher score on windowed mode than I do on fullscreen, despite the window size being the same size and more processes being in use while in windowed :/ I'm not very computer savvy so I don't understand this. Can anyone explain?

Some games prefer some cards and do well with them, while others hate them. That is the most probable reason you're having problems, unless it's an Nvidia(or whatever it is that this one prefers).

From what I've experienced on weak machines and MMOs is that it can play the game just fine, but if you're in a heavily congested area (with other players) you're going to get a ton of lag, and a framerate low enough to keep the game playable but still annoy the piss out of you :P
