What types of japanese text is used predominantly in PSO2? I don't know much if anything about how to distinguish kanji, katakana, or hiragana and would like to know... any help is appreciated, thanks ^^

If you take the time to learn katakana you'll be able to read some weapons and item names, character names, and some other nouns.

If you want to take meaning away from the rest though, you're going to have to learn around 2100 kanji. Don't get me wrong, knowing the katakana is helpful, but don't expect to suddenly know what all the menus and item descriptions say.

Item names will mostly be in Katakana.

Katakana = for name of most stuffs in game.
Hiragana = for general conversation.
Kanji = enhance the meaning to both above. It make any vague Hiragana become understandable and it also use to name some item.
