So I downloaded the character creation thing but when I actually try to make a character it crashes. Is anyone else having this problem?

Somewhere your video settings are wrong. I would first turn down the shader setting then go from there. It's the first blade where you see the 1-5 slider. Thats what was making it shut down for me at first.
