View Full Version : Replacing PSO2 soundtrack

If I wanted to replace the music files, what you think should be the steps to follow and were should I start looking at?
How do I open the .dat files? and from there?

I have no clue how to do this on PSO2 so I seek your help.
I know it seems kinda soon but I got spare time and would like to get some skills on the matter. Too bad I'm clueless roflol halp

Don't quote me on this, but I think it was found during data mining that the music files are encrypted. I don't know if it's going to be possible to replace the music files. Also, would or wouldn't this fall under the "altering the client" umbrella that is forbidden?

I most assuredly would.
What little games don't bother with this usually have their music files out in the open, with no encryption or security of any kind, and you can just swap files.

Boom, just quoted you.

Also yes, the music files are heavily encrypted. I did some digging of my own and managed to find what I'm 99% sure were music files, but I couldn't get them to play back no matter how hard I tried. From the digging I did, I was able to find out what zones will be in the game, but couldn't get those zones music to play, so I had to resort to other methods to get the music present in the closed beta uploaded to YouTube.

I'm sure once PSO2 is closer to release, the files won't be so encrypted, or they may very well still be encrypted at release, but at least I'll have access to the music in-game, so it'll be uploaded regardless. As for your question about replacing the soundtrack, well... That just doesn't seem possible right now.

Why don't more games just have their music files out in the open? Especially long lasting online games? I wanna fight bosses to some SSH, and listen to some distant worlds in the field!

It does make sense in this game, though. There are multiple variations of the same song in the same zone, depending on what's going on. I still don't know exactly what goes on, but I wouldn't want to mess with that. Best case scenario, you'll ruin the song you're listening to when it transitions to a completely different song.

To be honest, even if I could, I probably wouldn't alter PSO2's soundtrack. It's very atmospheric as-is, and I think that only adds to the experience. The Phantasy Star series, to me, has been one of those series where you don't just play it, you experience it.

I myself was going to be willing to replace the soundtrack with megadrive phantasy star's.
Would fit my experience very well, especially when fighting in the field and switching to emergency code.

Anyway I didn't like the soundtrack at all after playing cbt, so I thought I should give this a try since turning music off and opening your music folder isn't as good.

Someone make a hard rock/techno remix of this so I can use it for the Dark Falz battle music:

I'd like to see the return of Profound Darkness, to be honest. That boss has wrecked me more than any boss in Phantasy Star history.

Say wha? Profound Darkness, hard? That was one of my easiest fights! Epic as all hell, but between Megid, Silver Tusk, and Raja, that boss doesn't stand a chance. It was Lassec that was the destroyer of hope.

...

Sorry, I got off topic there. Yes, we need remixed PS music and somehow hack that into the game.

Yeah, I dunno. I've always had a problem with Profound Darkness, not sure why. It's probably because I always rush the bitch right when she (it?) becomes available. I tend to be a little under leveled.

Considering a lot of PSO music was remixed classic Phantasy Star music, and that PSO2 has remixes of PSO music, I would say we already have remixed PS music to a degree.

If we're going to get into this topic, I'd be interested in extracting the music to add to my collection normally, and I think the only song I'd swap out is the EMERGENCY CODE: DUEL one because it just doesn't seem to match the rest of it for some bizarre reason.

I've always been of the mindset that, if you play a video game, then you should listen to its own music and sound effects. In my opinion, if a game has a good OST to go along with those enjoyable and epic moments, then it just makes it that much more memorable, hence why I listen to a lot of game soundtracks on my Zune if I'm travelling, or have them playing in the background on Youtube or something while I'm just chilling on the PC.

That, and some game composers like Nobuo Uematsu and Koji Kondo are just awesome.

Indeed, music and sound is just as much a part of how a game should be designed as the art, story, gameplay are integral. All of these things come together to create the world you're playing in and to replace these elements is an insult to the designer and the team that composed the music and sounds for it.

Ha, speak for yourself! As soon as I started listening to PS soundtracks, I immediately noticed licks in new PSO episodes. You're right about one thing, though. They're integrated so well, that they don't distract from the song at all. Sure, the remixed music might be segmented, but damn if it isn't fun to listen to from start to finish.
By the way, PSU and the PSP games remixed a couple of older songs, too. The only ones I can name are Mother Brain's fight theme, and More Haste, Less Speed from, I think PSP2? Not nearly as much music is remixed in the newer games, but at least those stand out.

I agree, to an extent. New things should be listened to to their original music. Going into the forest for the first time, seeing the new scenery and new enemies, that needs to be done while listening to the forest's music. After the hundredth time, however? Having the option to change up the music might be nice then.
That's why I like modifying the music files, which I haven't been able to do since FFXI. After a certain time, I already have a particular idea in mind when I think of an area. And I have another song that I might prefer to listen to with that idea. And if I get bored of that song, I can always switch.
It's like I've been saying, more customization is always a good thing.

Well yeah, but I think the idea is to have the music change to different tracks depending on area and bosses and the like, just like the in-game music would. Having the music playing in Winamp/iTunes/Zune/whatever in the background isn't the same.

I played EVE Online for a while, and EVE has an in-game function to play music from your library. I loaded up the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, and it fit awesomely. When I got into battle, it played Derezzed. It was lovely.

Since people in here seem to be interested in classic PS songs, I wish to direct you here: http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194306

I've listed a couple of soundtracks which have redone PS stuff, and I'm looking for people to tell me of anything I missed.
After listening to everything I've posted (because I know everyone in this thread is that interested in their PS music), tell me how awesome each piece would fit in each part of the game.

Funny you should mention that, I actually made a MMX1~3 .ogg pack for PSOBB. Volt Catfish was a pretty good fit for Spaceship.

[SPOILER-BOX]This ogg pack consists of tracks from Mega Man X1~3.
All tracks are the SNES versions.
Simply drag and drop the tracks into your ogg folder in your main data folder.
Back up your ogg folder first though in case you want to revert it.

On the subject of music, I have to say that I like all of it. I wouldn't change the Emergency Code: Duel music at all, I think the three themes I have listened in the Closed Beta were good enough for a boss battle. If I had to keep one, it would be the Rockbear/Catadran one, though, with the Dark Ragne one being a close second. The Vol Dragon is the weakest, in my opinion, but it's still nice to hear, gives the necessary 'oh, shit' feeling when fighting a dragon.

Also, just a little note from me here, but if Sega released the OST of this game, I would be throwing money at the computer screen. And I'm pretty sure a lot of people here would, as well.

But if someone is interested in knowing a possible choice of mine for an alternate boss battle theme...

I lean more towards Kraftwerk than Draft Punk. I would even go Pink Floyd or The Art Of Noise before using Draft Punk. I used Kraftwerk to replace the music in PSOBB.

This post just bothers me. How can you be so self-assured to state your opinion that a couple of guys wearing fancy K'nex masks are apparently musical immortals, ignoring every other creative piece in history?

You and I both know it's not true. Point is, it's opinion. The moment you start stating it as a law, I want to come after you with something painful.

Like, say I wanted to replace the room music with some Mozart? Am I going to go MOZART IS THE ONLY ARTIST WORTH BEANS? No, that would be stupid, and I would be stupid for thinking it.
