Yeah. It's time to do something with this country's true illegal immigrant problem.
Time to party like it's 1492.

Ain't reality a b****, Mittens?

Make no mistake, the United States took its land from the natives by means of war.

As far as the impact of illegal immigration on the modern United States... Illegal immigrants are using our public resources, while not contributing to the tax system that funds them. In a time when our government already doesn't have enough money to fund those resources, we certainly don't need this extra drain.

Still, while many illegal immigrants are drug runners and the like, many are otherwise honest people and hard workers, just looking for a better life. Many of them come here illegally because our current immigration system is ridiculously slow, and desperately needs to be streamlined. There's a certain kind of illegal immigrant that doesn't really cause a problem for us, and that sort of person needs to be granted citizenship.

They pay some taxes - sales tax for one, there's no way to avoid it.

Actually, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that around 6 to 9 million (about 50 to 75%) of undocumented immigrants file individual tax returns each year. So apparently they (at least half of them) do pay their state, federal, and local taxes. However, unlike your typical American citizen, illegal immigrants are less likely to collect on benefits of that tax money out of fear of being discovered and deported. For example, they're less likely to report crimes to the police, file for unemployment insurance, and will never collect on social security (due to being ineligible) to which they pay in about $7 billion dollars annually. The services they use the most of are health care (due to high under/uninsured rates) and education, and this is typically where you hear the most of complaints about illegals being a drain on the economy. Overall, while illegal immigration can put moderate stresses on the budgets of state and local governments where they are the most prolific, they also represent a significant boon on the federal level and to the economy as a whole.

CBO: Impact of Unauthorized Immigration on the Budgets of State and Local Governments (http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/ftpdocs/87xx/doc8711/12-6-immigration.pdf)

New York Times: Illegal Immigrants Are Bolstering Social Security With Billions (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/05/business/05immigration.html?_r=1&ex=1270353600&en=78c87ac4641dc383&ei=5090)

And then, of course, there is the sales tax they pay which Randomness mentioned. They also purchase billions in merchandise at US prices which creates American jobs and bolster trade relations with other nations. Not to mention that immigration (illegal or otherwise) is one of the reasons why America isn't seeing a negative population growth and staring down the barrel of some of the problems that are plaguing nations like Japan. The Census Bureau projects that by 2050, fertility rates in the US will have fallen from 1.10 (or 2.20 - just above the replacement rate of 2.0 for both mother and father) to 0.54 (1.08 ), at which point we will have to enact public policies to encourage fertility and lean upon immigration to bolster our population and provide the workforce necessary to sustain an aging population.

Oh wait... this got moved to FKL... ahem...

There are more American born/non-Immigrants running drugs than Pedro from Mexico or Augusto from Panama. I think you're drawing on some very thin cultural biases that are active in the U.S. Republican Party right now.
Ronald Reagan had no problem allowing thousands of Cubans to emigrate to South Florida during the Mariel boat lift.

We should do everything to get illegal citizens legalized and send back the drug smugglers, criminals, and fools. Perhaps we should send a few of our worst politicians over the border too? They are acting a bit unAmerican and don't seem to care about the future of the USA.

btw, guess what? My father was an immigrant too. :D ^^;

It is true though that the US has a very, very bad history with native americans. We basically broke every treaty we ever signed with them. We have the infamous case of a president ignoring the supreme court. They were treated about as bad as african-americans.
