What does this game want from me?!

I'm in a bind here: after trying to log in, I'm greeted with this message. What should I enter here?

It says choose your player ID, this is your in-game name

I think you're supposed to put in what name you want other players to see... or something.

Copy and paste the text, using Ctrl+C ;) And then it'll tell you about your Game ID (Display name)

It's asking you to put down your "main" name. Not your chars name.

So for example, if your char's name is Dias everyone will see him as "Dias" but when you befriend someone they wont see you as "Dias" they will see you as that name you put down in there.

So it's kinda like your overall user name.

It's asking for your ingame name. It is a name used globally on your characters on that ship. Say you were looking for your friend "Mizuru" in parties, but you don't remember thier character name cause they make one every friggan week for w/e reason. If you remember the global name, you can easily find Mizuru by seeing thier name listed as YETANOTHERCHARACTER (Mizuru) by looking in party participant lists.
