For those that were able to play the CBT, are mags basically like they were back on PSO (feed mates and other materials to level specific points of interest, the mag changes because you fed it, you continue feeding it certain materials to obtain a desired mag) or has that been remastered or tweaked?

Mags don't work quite the same way. You can feed them just about anything now instead of only consumables like PSO and that makes them easier to feed and raise. Any mags besides your first are now cash shop items though.
