Macro are just regular macros. Auto words are text that can activate base on the situation they are specified for. Such as being heal or finishing an emergency code. Their very nifty and can be customized completely. I'll try and not ramble around and keep it simple.
1.How to get to Macro/Auto Words.
[SPOILER-BOX]Bring up your main menu and move over to the settings(the box with the gears).
Then pick the second option.

Confirm that and you should get this menu.

2.How to set and use marcos.
[SPOILER-BOX]The first option you'll see after that are your marcos. They each have a number by them so I wont explain what that does. Now you can type what ever you want in that just exit that menu and it saves it. You don't need to confirm anything.
The Hotkey for the keyboard is CTRL + F1 - F10. For the gamepad you can bring up the quick menu by pressing the select button. This can also be brought up by bring pushing end on your keyboard.

Then select the first option and that's your macros. Hit it to activate it. That's all I know about marcos.
[/SPOILER-BOX]
3.Changing Colors and Adding Variables(Info came from the awesome JeyKama)
[SPOILER-BOX]
A small addendum to autowords, found out that the macros support colors and variables.
Colors
Red {red}
Beige {bei}
Green {gre}
Violet {vio}
Black{blk}
Orange {ora}
Yellow {yel}
Blue {blu}
Purple {pur}
Gray {gra}
White {whi}
Default {def}
To use these, place the modifier in front of the text you want to color, and it will color everything until the next color modifier.
For example.
{yel}This is a {pur}purple {red}word. But now it is red.
(unfortunately these forums don't seem to support color.) That would make "This is a" in yellow test, "purple" in purple text, and the rest of the line in red.
Variables.
These are cool because they can be written to make your party/multiparty aware of your status. Ever had a fit trying to tell your group that 3 Guwanada's just spawned while running away from them? Here's the answer.
<photonarts> or <pa>: Displays the name of the last PA used
<technic> or <tc>: Displays the name of the last Tech used
<pos>: Current position
<area>: Current area name
<me>: Your character's name
<target> or <t>: Displays name of last thing targeted
<weapon> or <wp>: Displays name of currently equipped weapon
<hp>: Displays current/max hp
<pp>: Displays current/max pp
So if you want to tell your multiparty where an event is, you can use the <pos> in an Event Start autoword or a Shortcut Word for easy access.
/toge {def}Event starting at {red}<pos>{def}!
will get everyone's attention and display your current position in bright red text.
[/SPOILER-BOX]
4.How to set up/use auto words.
[SPOILER-BOX]Okay, so on the same menu for marcos are auto words right below it.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w216/beanclr/pso20120625_135912_003.jpg
These a work in according to the circumstance they are set up for. They aren't all spammy. Most of them are rarely happen. If anything I would say make one for dying/reviving as its very helpful when things get hairy.
You can set up to 3 auto words that are chosen at random for everyone. Use the + symbol to add and the - symbol to delete the bottom one.
Following the names of the tabs I used(Not a perfect translation) these are what they need to happen for them to work.

Someone has already made a pretty rocking guide for that so I'll link you to that (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196339).
