now a days people think that RPG's mean heavy storyline, magic and item finding. RPG stands for ROLE PLAYING GAME. and not turn based battles. The only reason turn based battling was introduced to RPG's was because 1 person cannot control multiple characters simultaneosly. Now that you can play online, you will slowly see RPG's go back to the realtime rule based worlds they always were. But there is still something missing, the roleplaying is gone and everyone has turned PSO into E-Bay. I seriously want to start a new guild for non-cheating, non item tracking, non-trading all the time people who just want toplay for the battles. The serious RPG fan lives for the battles. I don't want to spend hours on pioneer 2 negotiating with people for this and that item, I WANT TO PLAY DAMMIT. And And I am sick of joining a game and being bombarded with do you have this and that questions. I put serious time in the game for my items and I don't want dupers ruining it for me. And if I put in serious time, why can't you ?

I must say the one thing that annoys me a lot is when as soon as i go into a ship/block they are talkin item trading. It is all people want. If they spent half the time playing v hard with ppl as they do asking around for stuff they might just get what they r looking for. Damn people.

I never said RPG's had to be turn based. I actually prefer real time. My complaint is that when you play a role of a character you are supposed to find out what happens to that character. A story is central to any RPG. I used to play D&D and I always gave my guys a story to follow for every adventure. How can you say a story isnt important????? LOL

Story is not the main point of PSO, the main point is interaction between players, thats why it has *online* in the title. The fun of the game is playin with cool people online, not finding out about the fate of the world. Yes, I would like a little heavier story, and a good ending for all the work I put into this game, but thats not what makes it fun.

yeah the game was made for player interaction but that leaves the offline mode in the dust.

"The serious RPG fan lives for the battles."

Well, I think a 'role-playing game' is more about character development and storyline than pure combat, but I understand what you mean. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

RPG isn't specificaly just about a story... This game and Diablo prove that... barley any story at all... just enough to give the setting. When I see RPG I generaly thing character development. I think the major reason you will see people in the lobbys more asking for items rather than in a game finding it themselves is because, over the years, thats how online games evolved... look at UO... and Everquest... Sure they have fighting, but alot of players now-a-days arn't looking for the items themselves... they spend thier time in Britania or Gbay (er... Gfay... doh!) sitting at the bank asking for items. That is one reason why I generaly like offline RPG more than online.

all in all... if storyline made an RPG~ I think Halflife would count as an RPG just as much as any other game.

i know what your talking about, PSO can have a good story to it but, you have to find ppl that wil RP with you make a background for your character, have your own story unfold for them as they do the same for you, sure it takes some work but if you played and liked D&D it will come easy to you. I've joined a group that does this.

I also see what you mean about ppl not playing the game and fighting any more for the past 2 weeks even my fiends never want to play just trade, and try to get all the rares there are, i like rares and finding them, ive decided im not trading anymore, for one it ends up being dubed to death, and two i just want to play the game.

I dunno about you folks, but I sure enjoyed reading all those message "pods" on the ground, and talking to the Principle after each area. The FIRST TIME AROUND.

Yeah, it was kinda of creepy to read someone's final words. You get a sense of forboding doom. RRR's epilogue in the Ruin AREA, plus the awesome level decor, setup a superb mood for the final level/boss.

For example, the message "pods" are arranged on the map so that you will come across them in the sequence that makes sense. First you find out about the "Seal" that traps the great evil. Then you find out what the final phrase in the enigmatic chant is (read those rune pillars). Then you find out about the name of the evil and its need for a corpal form every 1000 years.

Then RRR was faced with a dilemma: She knew she is the best hunter on Pioneer 1, but she also knew that if DF defeated her, then DF will banish her soul and take her powerful form. You read about RRR's brave concluding declaration before she charge into what she knew was a suicidal confrontation. At this point, you are faced with wave after wave of C. bringer and Del Sabre, you are probably having a tough time and making frequent trip back to Pioneer2. RRR had no ship to return to.

Then you enter the chamber of flying "spawns" (they look like sperms in a womb) http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif
Which was kinda of phalic, but never-the-less a fitting setting for the abomination your are able to encounter.

After taking that final portal, you were suppose to be surprised to find yourself in a surreal mesa. A beautiful clearing with bright sun, a few clouds to line the bluest sky, and a majestic monument . But if you look carefully, you see graves around the circular clearing, and you remember that this is all an illusion.

Thus you approach the monolith and prepare to be a hero or die trying.

I know there wasn't much in terms of text story, but the message "pods" are intended as seeds that should germanate with your imagination. You need to stop, and take a good look at your surrounding. Note destroyed consoles in Mine2 and replaced by cryptic runes on the floor, see the pulsing walls in ruin3 with the hellish fume, exam the mutation of the wild life; Boomba to Dimension. Play this game as a hunter would, or a detective would. Why do you think the principle kept on asking you to "investiate" instead "slaughter everything that moves and find my Rico".

Little details here and there provide you a eerie sense of calamity, and that I think, makes a more believable story than some NPC blabbering his head off.

I want to roleplay with you people. I would like that a lot. Better than slaughtering everything in sight while trying to ignore those text bubbles of the people who are offering me a ____ for my _____.

Well I play board RPG's they are a lot of fun. A story line is good but I always hated those RPG's where you had to sit through hours of cinematics that just pissed me off. But Online games now are just a trading post for people tryin to get better. But I used to play UO and would listen to people whine about murders but when you think about it that helped make the game fun http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif.

Anthroplasm is right on target. In games like PSO, you get out of the story what you put into it, and it most definitly isn't spoon-fed to the player. Most RPGs are simply interactive movies where you really don't do all that much.
Hell, you can even make up your own story for PSO and it would probibly conform to the game! That is why PSO is one of the RPGs of all time, IMO.

Guys! If you think that PSO isnt RPG enough, you are doing it all wrong! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif
Just a suggestion:
When you're a tall dark muscular Humar, pretend you'r him please for that instant and talk rough/suave(up to you) When you're a tiny weeny female character, talk cute for god's sake! LOL Seriously, thats what some of my friends and I do(eventhough they're mostly Japanese). You really have to ROLE PLAY!

Aku Soku Zan~! (Blacked Hair Asian Samurai-like Humar with an orochi Agito)
Holy up~! (Twiny Fonewearl doing a Grants)
Initiating Attack! (Racast aka Super Combat Robot)

Ps: developing a love interest for another female gamer in the game is also considered RPG! (check out Weekly Dori-muKyasutoMagazin http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif)

This game has transformed into pokemon with the rare weapons. And when I criticize the dupers they yell at me, they don't even feel guilty.
