i believe im downloading the patches now the menu with 3 bars that fill up blue. after awhile i get a error message and have to start over is this normal? My version is 01.02.04

No worries dude, this is normal. All that means is that the connection timed out. It took me 3 shots to finally get the game patched. Try deleting your cookies and all that good stuff and turning off any other active programs, and if it fails try again. You'll get it eventually.
