PSO Ep. 1&2 (Plus or otherwise) Question

I'm not sure if this has been asked before or not, since I have never owned PSO on the Gamecube, but does PSO for the GC ask you to buy a license to play offline like the Xbox version? If so, would this hinder me from playing, or is there a trick to it?

I would like to know before I ask a friend to look for a copy. I don't want to waste her time or her money, especially since she's being so kind to me.

Unlike on Xbox, you only need the game and a memory card to play.
