View Full Version : PSO2 OPINION: "Well Known" English voice actors to dub?

MegaZoneXE
Aug 7, 2012, 11:05 PM
Many have spoken on how they feel about the possible dubbing here (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197855) for PSO2

But the English version of Phantasy Star Online 2 should use well known voice actors, just as they did with the Japanese version.

I've done some [light] voice comparisons to find the best actor suitable for a few characters, trying to stay true to their Japanese actor and personality [Lisa...]:

I wouldn't expect a high-caliber "dream cast" (HAHAHA SEE WHAT I DID?) dub for this game at all. I really doubt they have the budget for it and it largely depends on where and how the dub is produced, be it internally or contracted out to someone else.

There's a lot more that goes into producing a dub than "Man, I want this person's voice in those polygons." There's budget, contracts, unions, and location of both the production studio and the actors themselves.

Well-known actors to do the character audio too. Since we know we'll never get actual phrases like the JP characters get and instead just moans and groans and other sounds associated with sex, I think Lexi Belle and Sasha Grey should do the female voices. Oh god, Sasha Grey

And for the older folks maybe some Ashley Renee~

I know it's silly but I'm kind of excited for them to have CHARACTER voices from famous voice actors and actresses, but I get the feeling they won't because there isn't as big a market for that kind of thing in the west as far as I know.

This thread is getting my hopes up, but I know I'm going to be let down. Look what t hey did to PSU.

All those fucking characters they voiced and the only one with the instant orgasm dub voice is Karen Erra, and HNNNG is Lou.

That's awful. Why did they even voice the others if they ended up so bad?

They got better in PSP. I mean, Emilia Percival was such a little sister to me... and and and and and then there's Ursula and whoamygod Chelsea~

Okay, some personal opinions, since I happen to be familiar with a few on that list.

Since you want to compare Tia's voice to her JP and make it similar, I'd switch Aki and Tia around. Reason being is I know that Laura does use a certain voice type (Rise, Maka, borderline Chun-Li) that would work perfectly for Tia. As for Aki, hrmm... Well I know that from what little of Michelle Ruff I've heard, she has a very good low-tone voice type (Yukari Takeba, Etna, Rukia, to name the ones I can right off hand at this moment) that works well for Aki.

I could see Laura using her low-tone set for Aki though (Android 18, Harribel) if she was cast for it. And as much as I hate Bosch being overused, even I cannot deny he fits like a glove for the role of Xeno.

As for Afin... I'm going to have to go against Spike and recommend Sam Riegel. He did the voice for Silabus in .hack//G.U., and his voice sounds somewhat like a younger, more light-hearted Liam O'Brien (especially true when Liam uses his "pretty boy" voice type) - if they use Sam Riegel in PSO2 the same way they did in .hack//G.U., then it'd definitely work.

For Jean, I'm gonna be bold and make another suggestion to replace yours: Kirk Thornton. I know for a FACT he does middle-aged type characters - he's done Jubei from BlazBlue, as well as Antares from .hack//G.U. - I can think of no one else who might go hand in hand at the moment.

I agree with your choice for Shion - she's supposed to have this air of emotionless-ness, and Mary knows how to pull this off.

With Patty, give her the choice you gave Maloo. I see her fitting Patty's aggressive energetic personality quite well, especially if she uses her brighter personality voice type (Nikki from Mana Khemia, Orihime from Bleach, Yui Hirasawa from K-On). In exchange, I'd actually throw Michelle on Maloo, since her Yuki Nagato emotionless voice type works best in that role (again, this is parring up tone for tone, type for type with the JP version).

Lisa is a hard one to voice, but I can right out say that from what I know of Kari Wahlgren, this is a flat out NO. No voice of hers works with Lisa's personality - if you wanna keep that innocent yet sinister yandere personality in the voice, you place either Sheh or Bailey in that role (using their upbeat voice sets). Or.... actually, why don't we throw Mandy Clark in that one? She's done the voice for Tomo Takino from Azumanga, and I know she can at least maintain that sweet-yet-sinister feel to a voice.

Finally, for our basic D.I.D. Matoi-chan, your idea flat out changes her sweet yet innocent nature. No. Don't do it. I'd throw either Jessica Boone (Misaki Suzuhara from Angelic Layer, Chiyo Mihama from Azumanga) or a very held back Sandy Fox (Mistral from classic .hack, Flonne from Disgaea) *might* work. But again, you have to keep that whole personality thing in check.

Sometimes when dubs occur, they don't fit the original mold they were meant for. What you have to do most times is get people who have experience in dubbing for those personality types and have voice sets to go WITH said personalities.

Everything else is no comment because I haven't heard much of them. Although, for the Dinian Sage that you and Aki talk with in the (currently) last story quest, either Bosch or Liam O'Brien works in this case (I actually felt Bosch would do well here).

To me Tia has more of a childlike, teasing, and yet somewhat low type of voice that is a bit hard to place. Lara Jill Miller, Stephanie Beard, or Lacey Chebert could work for her, but I think Lara works better as Furie (Edit: Don't know why I wrote Shion here... >_>), and the latter two don't seem to do much in voice-acting these days. Michelle kind of hits on some notes for her while missing others, but it's the best I could come up with off-hand that actually seems viable. Laura Bailey though would be a complete miscast, IMO. Her voice tends to come off as more stern or sultry, and I think this could work for Aki, but would be horrible for Tea. Honestly Michelle sort of runs the line such that I think she could even be a suitable Aki as well, but flipping the roles the other way just wouldn't work, IMO.

As for Afin, I suppose it depends on how you see the character. If you see him as inquisitive and like the "Hero just starting an adventure", then Sam fits. If you see him as an obnoxious git, then Spike fits. So either way. >_>

Kirk Thornton's 'gruff old guy' voice tends to be... really abrasive to me. It just feels over-the-top, honestly. Beau is really the perfect choice for Jean to me, but I just love Michael's Schwarzwald, so I'd like to see it go to him.

As far as Patty goes, the issue is that I feel Stephanie does much better when in a reserved or 'awkward' type of role than she does in big and boisterous roles. Honestly, her best role IMO was probably as Mamimi, and though that WAS more energetic and expressive than what you see in Maloo, it still isn't near what you need for Patty. Honestly, I changed my choice for Patty several times before settling on Tiffany. Rewatching Asuka's introduction in Eva, it seems like a role that Tiffany could do well in though.

And as for Kari as Lisa, my initial thought was Haruko Haruhara. It's not the same type of crazy, as Lisa tends to dotter somewhere between cutesy, psycho, and proper, but Kari's performance there is probably the most 'natural' instance of inanity and mania in a female character that I can recall in a dub.

And as for Matoi, my mind immediately jumped to Lain Iwakura from Serial Experiments Lain for some reason. Hence: Bridgette.

Agree with the Laura Bailey opinion for Aki and Tia, Disagree with using her for Lisa though not even her (Catherine) voice really fits imho.

Shion seems like a character that Ali Hillis (Liara T'soni/Lightning) could pull off pretty well. Surprised no one has mentioned Jennifer Hale for her either (Naomi Hunter/Female Shepard)

Grey Delisle's (Azula from the Last Airbender or Female Wizard from Diablo III) seems like it'd be enough (childlike sinister crazy) for Lisa. Tara strong could pull it off easily too. As much as I like Kari Wahlgren I'm with you on her being a nono for Lisa.

I will agree with removing Laura here for Aki - she's one of the top four VAs that I have a severe vendetta against for being far too overcast (Lowenthal takes the #1 spot), and her voice in that role is not a good match. As someone earlier said though, Ali Hillis in her Lightning voice type would be perfect to replace both Ruff and Bailey.

However, for Tia, I agree with that teasing bit. Except Tia has that sweet, yet innocent nature in her voice that makes you go KYUUUUUNNNNN everytime you hear it. That's why I put Laura there - because I've seen roles where she's done it well.

Also to clear up any confusion, Tia is the dreamy, airheaded twin, whilst Patty's the more aggressive, spunky twin.

As for Afin, I suppose it depends on how you see the character. If you see him as inquisitive and like the "Hero just starting an adventure", then Sam fits. If you see him as an obnoxious git, then Spike fits. So either way. >_>

The way I see Afin is that he's not obnoxious. He's trying to juggle the duties of a neophyte ARKs whilst also searching for his friend - and it just so happens that he didn't really have any friends before meeting you, thus he jumped on the chance when he saw you (hence the "Aibou" spam).

He's competent enough when it actually counts - like when you two went to save Matoi, he was shown to at least have a sense of level-headedness to A)Snap you out of the trance from hearing Matoi's cries for help, and B)Could at least think straight about how to deal with actually FINDING Matoi. He's not trying to make moves on her - he's just as responsible as you are.

But the thing most people call him a coward for (the Geternhalt/Mask mini-conflict) is easily explainable. First, you have the major antagonist deciding he wants to cut your head off - and there's obviously power behind that mask. Second, Geternhalt is one of the higher-ups in the ARKS chain of command - as a novice, you DON'T piss off your superior, no matter how badass you may be to think you want to try.

That's why I chose Sam for this. Afin's that character that's just getting used to how things work and has to juggle personal and work-related affairs all at once. I don't see someone like that being intentionally obnoxious.

Kirk Thornton's 'gruff old guy' voice tends to be... really abrasive to me. It just feels over-the-top, honestly. Beau is really the perfect choice for Jean to me, but I just love Michael's Schwarzwald, so I'd like to see it go to him.

I could agree with this one.

Incorrect. Sheh doesn't do heavily assertive roles often, but when she does, she nails 'em dead. Nikki from the first Mana Khemia is one of the best examples of her being simply spunky and badass at the same time (although you wouldn't know this since she went uncredited for that one). Her role as Metis also brings into account that she can be violently serious at times as well.

Now that I look back at it, I realize I was thinking of the incorrect person when I said what I did. I was thinking of Erin Fitzgerald, who is already bad enough on roles like this, but to top it off I can't ever forgive her for messing up on her role as Alkaid whilst doing a perfectly good job on Sakubo (especially true since I hate the latter and adore the former).

And as for Matoi, my mind immediately jumped to Lain Iwakura from Serial Experiments Lain for some reason. Hence: Bridgette.

My mind was too focused on her shitty job as Atoli in //G.U. - that's why I was against her. She can't do those types of characters well 100% of the time - it's hit or miss.

Replies in bold. Do note that we haven't seen the entire roster for the first arc, but I know one thing for sure - an English dub would have to be top-notch or not at all if they're going to attempt it.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn!!! WOOT!!! only reason to play EU/US version right there!!! (they had better do it....) does anyone think Richard Epcar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Epcar#Anime) will do anything?? he was Batou in Ghost In The Shell as well as several dozen other TV shows and video games+^_^+ Richard was also VA for Ziggy in Xenosaga, and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was Doctus in Xenosaga EP-3 +^_^+ *Xenosaga freak right here* +^_^+ Lia Sargent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lia_Sargent) i think would be an histerical voice for Shion, since she played a Shion character in the past (Xenosaga Ep-I and Ep-III), and was also VA for GitS Tachikoma+^_^+

i think Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Elizabeth_McGlynn) should do Shion's voice+^_^+ and Richard Epcar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Epcar) should be in there somewhere too+^_^+ both of them did VA in Xenosaga games (Doctus and Ziggy) as well as GitS VA (Motoko and Batou) +^_^+
yeah, i said what OP said about Shion long time ago+^_^+ Problem?

Wendee Lee for this. Tara Strong would make a good Echo I think.Eh! I love Wendee Lee, but I don't like Lisa... at all. I'd like to "hear" Wendee do Echo better, though her voice might be too strong. She can do young.
