when you enter the camp ship on the left is a console on the wall. Interact with it and it should bring up a list of npc that you can invite. This same console also allows you to invite your friends npc partners.

After you enter the mission ship (the lobby with the pool) there is an "i" symbol between the drink station and quick-shop. Click it and you can select an NPC to join you.
