I'm fairly certain this has been asked numerous times, but I'm new and I'm trying to spark a conversation. :D
So, who is your favorite and least favorite character, and yes, you can clump the Vol Brothers together as your least favorite character lol

Burce is awesome and Ethan is awful

I'm fairly certain I managed to get Bruce's card before my XBOX died. My favorite would have to be the late President Dallgun, may he rest in peace, and my least favorite would have to be Lumia.

This is just for PSU though, Ethan & Lumia get much better later in the series.

Oh my God Hit0shi how can you like Hal? D:
I just wanna... Do UNHOLY things to her until she stops breathing. I HAD TO DO A MISSION WITH HER ONCE BACK IN PSU, it was a nightmare.

Lotta Ethan hate lol he gets better though in my opinion. When you first start though he has a Tidus complex. "I hate my dad for reasons that don't make sense!"

Favorite: ....do I really need to say?

Least favorite: Laia pre-episode 3. She's so unbearable before character development D:

Favorite: Leo. I can relate to him.

Least: Ethan. Annoying until the later parts.

Favorite: Karen, since she's the only one who seems to take mercenary work with the appropriate gravitas. Laia as a second, since she's the only character who undergoes any sort of development as the story progresses. Third, Mikaris Geid because I am enraptured by the idea of dating and having children with a strong willed and independently minded android woman. (Old-school Armitage III fan here)

Also, Kraz Muehler if we can add in PSP2 characters. He's a drunken porn hound. A man after my own heart.

Least: Tonnio Riima, Lucaim Nav, and young Lumia - (though PSP2 Lumia is pretty awesome).

Also, Yut Jun Yunkers if we add in PSP2 characters.

Laia is by no means my favorite character but her progression through AotI's story was well done.

Also, Yut Jun Yunkers if we add in PSP2 characters.
Nobody likes him. I wanted to punch him in the face until he nearly dies during the story. He does have an amusing dialouge at the end of Infinity though.

Bingo O ^Ob

If we're adding more. Then my second favorite is Karen. She's the reason my character uses twin daggers. Ethan is also a favorite of mines (GASP). Once you get over his tard-ness which was pretty much half of ep.1 he really does grow up.

Another least favorite is Tonnio. He's a little shit. I loathe every time I have to have him in my party. *insert obligatory hate for Howzer for his stupid hard boss fight here*

Hitoshi, yeah, it was an online event mission. I got to fight along side President Dallgun! :D

Magashi. How can anyone not enjoy this amusing anti-hero's antics? Lou is a close second for favorite NPC, but Magashi takes the gold medal.

As for the NPC's I can't stand? Vivienne and Pre-PSP2 Lumia. Quite possibly some of the most annoying characters in Phantasy Star. I guess Emilia also fits this category as well for the majority of PSP2, but she at least fleshes out her character a bit more and quits being an obnoxious moron later on.

Eh, Magashi could have been really interesting, but all throughout PSU Vanilla he was little more than a cardboard villain who had no real motivation other than the necessity of their being a villain. Later, every time they attempt some kind of character development, he just ends up hiding back behind that veneer of "Rwar! I are supposed to be villain! Fight me so I may prove my existence (as a villain)!" Bleh.

You know what characters I really hate? Any female wearing Bikini Swimwear. ...They invoke such uncomfortable and conflicting emotions. :(

HIT0SHI - The mission's they are talking about was during the 1up event where they added the Club and Hal was the Rep. to give you the mission's. There was different NPC's that join you during 4 different mission's. One of them also had the floater's to ride on too. The Npc's where Fulyen Curtz, Bruce Boyde, Remlia Norphe for Invisible Road First area. Ethan Waber (Rogue), Karen Erra, Mirei Mikuna (Karen's Sister) for Deadly Brilliance Second area. Liina Sukaya, Alfort Tylor, Laia Martinez for United Front Third area. Lucaim Nav, Obel Dallgun, Hal for Elements of Unrest Fourth area. You get one of these Npc's when you reach a certain area in the mission at random.

That was probably when I was still on my "break" for still playing on PSO (XBOX1) before they shut down the servers... Just my luck :C

When she has that english voice actor I don't think anyone will defend you :-P

Speaking of which most of the voice acting is kinda crap so I would not think twice about locking most of the cast in a room full of angry jarbas.

Still surprised no one voted for Le booby robutt <3 Wish that champagne SUV was obtainable

I wouldn't take it out on the VA's. Most of them were actually quite decent, especially when compared to what you find in other JRPGs like Arc Rise Fantasia and Star Ocean. It seems to me that most of the issue with the VAs was due to a lack of direction, lack of character motivation, and an inability for the localization team to "modify" the game in order to better parse out dialog and provide proper lip synching.

If you play the game more than once, you'll notice that on your second playthrough the "Next Chapter Previews" are replaced by a placeholder while the characters voices played a comedy bit in the background. They had a lot of fun with these comedy bits, and you can tell (I think) the quality of the VA work goes up substantially.

Also Brian Sommer, the guy who did the voice work for Magashi, stopped by the forums shortly after the game launched and in one of his posts he pretty much confirmed what I had suspected.

It is much more important to know WHY your character is saying something, than HOW he is saying it. The characters voice is hallow if there is no reasoning for him to be saying what he is saying. I remember the Bio that came with Magashi's audition material was fairly brief. I think they wanted him to be simply cold and calculating. So there was not much added to the characters background. They wanted him to be a single-mindedly, tactically driven bad ass. His focuse was to complete the task at hand, and then get on to the next one, by using whatever means. ~ Brian Sommer (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94961&page=2)

Yeah I figured that stuff played a part in it. That and a lot of games have the voce acting recorded before the cutscenes are finished.

I liked Karen a lot. She was much more female and human (although a newman) than most characters because she was always searching for identity. She represented the idea of how a second generation female lives in that universe. Whereas a lot of characters were first generation, she kept evolving.

Japanese love creating different worlds in their Universes and stories, but those attuned to anime, manga, video games will find that most characters are first generation or native in those worlds. In other words, characters who are born in one planet and live in the planet and represent such world.

We don't see a lot of characters who are born in one world, but really live and have children in another world. However, in American and European stories, exist a lot of characters who are second and third generation.

Karen was amazing at representing the second generation. I felt closer to the character because to be a newman is to be a second generation outright, even if they have an entire planet, but still Karen was the special case and also addressed the idea of family because of her sister.

My least favorite characters are those who are either arc-developed or underdeveloped.

Arc-Development are character who they develop but that accounts to character who change their clothes and carry some new weapon, are older but still generally act the same. In short, many chapters, many forms, still the same personality.

I also do not like it when characters are made as fan-service to one audience and really do not fit anything else. These character have a small or minor development and are hardly used.

As far as "Player Characters" go, I love the characters who show personality in their combat style but clothes as well. Sometimes the personality of the actual player helps or destroys the character, but there were several strong characters as player characters in the asthetic that I really enjoyed and others I truly despised.

Oh, and for the topic...

Favorites:

-Hamvolt Magashi. The fight against 3 of him when I first played PSU was made glorious by his overacting.

-Karl Hamzer, for the same reason to Magashi. "You're too SLOW!"

-Laia. Maybe it's because ladies like her don't usually take the spotlight in JRPGs, I dunno.

Least favorite:

-Hiru Vol. His hair is an ass.
