Nope, patch goes live some hours before maintenance is completed. It's always like that.

Servers usually go up at approximately 3:00 AM, according to Bumped (http://bumped.org/psublog/) (it's been a long time since I was even awake for the servers to go live, so I had to look it up). Sometimes they come back up early, though.

They're just being smart-asses, hurr hurr. Everyone 'round here knows how maintenance works by now.

Updates, bug fixes, new content and so on. They also check server integrity, wouldn't it just suck if the game just crashed because the servers couldn't handle the daily load? Every online game goes down for maintenance from either weekly maintenance or bi-weekly, there's never a time a game isn't down for updates or server integrity.
