Instead of relying on some forum user that will happen to help you within the 2-minute timer the captcha has before refreshing, you should try to solve it yourself, and this thread is here to help you with JUST THAT!.

Just as a forewarning, this thread is SPECIFICALLY to assist in the captcha component as well as a "help & support center" for captcha-related problems (post for help here, not in your own thread!). If you need assistance in the entire registration process, AIDA's got it covered (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210236)

Also, do read this entire OP - it'll save many headaches to come

Methods of attack - Your captcha-rsenal
A brief rundown:

Type 1's refer to copying the japanese characters and pasting them into captcha. Tedious and tricky as it requires frequent window switching and finding for the characters you need, but no learning required! (Recognition will greatly help, however)
Type 2's refer to alternative methods of directly inputting the japanese characters, such as through handwriting recognition, altering keybindings to input one character at a time or using another typewriter. Recognition will help, but more time is required for preparation and familiarity with the tools provided. Much faster than simple copy-paste.
Type 3's refer to tools that give a little bit more help outside of captcha. Broader and less specialised, it's more so designed to help you finish the entire registration form to get more time for captcha, but it does have captcha assistance. Best done in combination with type 1/2

Type 1-A: Copy-pasta
See spoiler↓
Here I present to you, the entire hiragana alphabet:

Basic:あいうえお かきくけこ さしすせそ たちつてと なにぬねの はひふへほ まみむめも やゆ よ らりるれろ わをん
Alternative: がぎぐげご ざじずぜぞ だぢづでど ばびぶべぼ
Alternative2: ぱぴぷぺぽ
Small script: ぁぃぅぇぉ っ ゃゅょ

And if it's needed somehow in the future, the katakana alphabet!
[Spoiler-box]

Just copy and paste what you need.
Small script is just for really abnormally small japanese characters such as in ひゃこ. Doubt you'll need to use it though.[/spoiler-box]
Type 1-B: Copy-Pasta; Organised by shape
See spoiler↓
[SPOILER-BOX]Lots of people still struggle with characters of similar shape, which is understandable and.....normal. So this time, I'm going to do just like in type 1-A, but organise them based on shape:
Leftovers:う かくけ しすせ つてと の ひふへ みむも やゆよ ら
がぐげ じずぜ づでど びぶべ
ぴぷぺ

あお
なただ
ぬめ
さざ きぎ
ねれわ
るろそぞ
ちぢを
はばぱ ほぼぽ ま
えん
にこご
いり
I highlighted し to emphasis that it is its own character, i.e. に≠し+こ
Do take care of the little " and ° marks - they matter!
[/SPOILER-BOX]

Type 2-A : Online Typewriter

Here is a website with buttons that act as typewriters for the hiragana script of japanese. (http://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/hiragana.htm) Just click to type, then copy (the copy button doesn't work for me, so just select>ctrl+C if you experience the same problem)

Type 2-B : DIY Typewriter **Experimental & likely difficult; Actual results may vary per user**
See spoiler↓
[SPOILER-BOX]I do not recommend this option, however it may be a better option for some of you compared to the online typewriter.
First, this requires that you have the japanese keyboard input set-up. Details can be googled, but it's simply:
-Control panel
-Region/Language settings
-Keyboard Settings
and insert japanese (Microsoft IME) from there.

After that, for the sake of this method, configure it (via properties) such that the input method is "Kana input" and not "Romaji Input".
To activate the japanese input, make sure it is selected in the language bar, then click the "A" button and change it from Direct input to Hiragana.
Now the really tough part - learning your new keyboard.
I've been experimenting with this, but your keyboard layout MAY be different from mine: QWERTY. Refer to these screenshots:
http://i.imgur.com/bOSSHL5.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ADKKhME.jpg
The blocks have been color-coded according to the hiragana alphabet sections, but there aren't enough colors for that many distinct blocks:-? Because of that, I also provided a small text-only chart to the side of the above picture.
Note on the わ/を Key: わ is the normal '0' input, but Shift+0 changes it to を. Shift modifies some other keys too, but only for small script.
The " and ° keys should be self-explanatory - modifying most of the characters to feature those...things - type them after the character in question.

If you choose to proceed with this option, good luck to you, as I can't guarantee the accuracy of the material provided. Simplest way to go about it - keep the screenshot(s) off to the side as reference, whilst you type.

[SPOILER]To be honest though, it's probably much much easier to learn the alphabet itself and its romaji, and just use romaji input...[/SPOILER-BOX]
Type 2-C: DIY Handwriting recognition (may not work for all users)
See spoiler↓
[SPOILER-BOX]Like type 2-B, this requires Japanese IME keyboard to be set up. If you do not how to do this, google it, but it's as simple as:
-Control Panel
-Region/Language settings
-Keyboard settings
However, if you're unable to "install" the asian languages, then you won't be able to do this.

To start off, make sure you're in kana typing mode.
Start typing a phrase, and press F5 to open up the IME pad. If that doesn't work, restore the language bar and open IME pad that way:
http://i.imgur.com/TgDwQKR.png
http://i.imgur.com/IvcYivY.png
The IME pad will open up; Click this button for handwriting mode:
http://i.imgur.com/B68CRAq.png
The following will then be available:
http://i.imgur.com/yHY2WbV.png
Now you can draw characters with your mouse, and hope for the best that you find what you want!
NOTE: The IME Pad will disappear once you change your input language, so you have to repeat this process to get it back up and running!
[/SPOILER-BOX]

Type 3 - Browser assisted

Transzilla Kion has put up a handy Google Chrome extension (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204778) which makes the entire registration process, login (to website) and Personal Info sections so much easier to do! It even integrates the hiragana typewriter linked above into the registration page! Check it out!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS/MIX-UPS
Read if you're getting confused between look-alike characters:
(These are more like testimonials, heh)
[spoiler-box]Summary:

Also watch for the little " dashes (aka "ten-ten"s) and °'s (aka "maru's") in
は;ば;ぱ

I don't have a captcha picture for them, but

me (め) and nu (ぬ)

look incredibly similar (at least to me) and are among the ones I mix up the most. Just commenting on this in case you get a captcha picture for either of them (so you can consider adding them to the new section).
The new section he mentioned here was where I have a gallery of such captchas combining these look-alikes together. Unfortunately, due to the captcha mechanics, these catpcha pictures expire themselves after some time, so the section itself, expired. IF you want to necro this section, provide SCREENSHOTS of such captchas (not direct img links to the captchas!)

If you want insight from one who has went through learning the alphabet:
[SPOILER-BOX]
When I began learning, what made it difficult was how similar so many things were, despite being scattered across references. I'd need one with a certain curl, but wouldn't be able to find it. I wound up skimming references line by line looking for all the ones that looked like it until I found it. I'd spend MOST of my time doing this for stuff like captchas, over and over because of how many there were.

So here they are grouped together (in no particular order), because that's what I needed the most back then before I wound up just learning the whole damn thing:
あぬめお
うつ づ
きさち ぎざぢ
けにこ げご
はほまも ばぼぱぽ
すせそ
たな だ
ねれわ
るろら

Then for katakana there aren't quite so many similar ones, but they are there:
シツ ジヅ
ウワラフ ヴプブ
クケタヌ グゲダ
ヒセ ピゼ
チナテ ヂデ
コロ ゴ
ソン ゾ
リルレノ

Uuuh, at a quick skim that should cover most of the similar-ish looking ones. I'm sure I missed a couple. I swear, that was the most confusing part when trying to learn hiragana. In katakana I could at least fill in the blanks since I knew item names in romaji, but hiragana was in actual japanese ha ha ha.

edit: obviously these lists aren't complete, because I was just grouping together the ones with similar bases or whatever they're actually called. The other ones are pretty easy to identify on their own.

[/SPOILER-BOX]
He brings up an interesting point (not explicitly stated):
the captchas shown are in handwritten font (i.e. pseudo-cursive). Because of that, you may mix up kana such as に and ほ as seperate characters: し+こ Or し+ま; watch out!
[/spoiler-box]
If you wish to succeed in this pesky captcha's, PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL!

Need some practice?
[SPOILER-BOX]You're likely going to struggle completing the captcha in 2 minutes during registration, so here are some sample captcha's I've grabbed throughout this thread, for you to practice with. Spoiler-boxing each answer is tedious, lol.
Anyway, the onus is on you to know whether you've succeeded within the two minute timer. Maybe if someone could make a flash game of sorts using these...that'd help.

A word from the OP:
[SPOILER-BOX]
It's been almost 2 years since this thread was made, and I'd like to thank everyone who've helped bring this to light.
It's been a while since I last updated this...hehe, sorry about that; RL and all.

I'd just like to say something else though:
While I appreciate those of you who have tried to PM me directly for captcha, I just want to tell you that you're LESS LIKELY to get help from a PM than simply posting here. Reason is because, as far as I know, emails are the only method of notification on these forums, and while I get heaps of those, due to filters, I don't really get notifications from all those emails. I basically pop on whenever I feel like it. (if anyone could enlighten me on how to tailor email notification behaviour for -specific- threads, whilst still maintaining all other subscriptions, I'm open to suggestions)
The other reason being that.....I'm simply not available most of the time. That can include time zone differences.
You're more likely to benefit from others who follow this thread. More helpers = more chances, yeah?

SO POST HERE, AND ONLY HERE, FOR CAPTCHASSISTANCE.

Phew, ok. Now I'll be sifting through this thread for any remaining captcha screenshots to compile a samples list. Be back with another quick update.

True, but at the same time this (should) save them the trouble of having to make an account on this forum JUST for the sake of asking for help on captcha's.
Instead they can forever remain lurkers :P

That's assuming they don't give up entirely because they can't make out the extra detail that is obscured by the process.

As far as it goes, this should be enough, but will mostly likely fall on deaf ears (or eyes) as most that lurk don't tend to read stickies or bump extremely old threads.

I think the problem a lot of people have with the captchas is the distortion on some of the characters. A lot of times, it may actually be one character, but be so distorted that you can't make a definitive match.

The katakana captcha was a bit easier with that, since the characters had less fine detail to them. Which, of course, is probably why they changed it.

I noticed that people who play pso2 and has bought AC have mastered hiragana sooner or later. Whether it is intentional or not, it clicks in so easily.

I have met many people who could not recognize what:

はみるろく

means when they first started out, but after one month of playing, they take a look at it and go:

ha, mi, ru, ro, ku

as if it was the most natural thing on Earth.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone. There are some who can play this game for a year and not learn hiragana, but there's a lot of people who pick it up and can recognize the characters, even if they cannot speak the language or type japanese well.

Ooorrr you could be remotely smart and logical, use these two sites:

http://bumped.org/psublog/phantasy-star-online-2-pre-open-beta-registration-guide/

http://translate.google.com/

then use the english patch on the game

and enjoy the game on a server that Sega DOES give a fuck about!! :D

PROFIT

Or you could go on with the "I'm so lazy" whining that is covered by empty arguments (like the ones you just mentioned), of course.

sorry about my language, but seriously, it pisses me off when people go "hurr its so hard to play becuz its japnz serverzz" when there's obviously SO MUCH community help to let us be able to play PLUS an english patch...and we don't even have IP block or anything.

So yeah, if anyone says they're not willing to take the "work" to get into JP servers, it's NOTHING MORE but lazyness.

I'm starting to feel like aa broken record for saying this: let them choose which version they want to play. The captcha is a hassle for those of us that don't want to bother with and let's not forget, anything server sided isn't translated.

The story patch is quite large, and the game eats up my bandwidth during large updates. Downloading another 1.1GB of extra data just so I can understand the story isn't quite worth the hassle.

Excluding sound-modifiers (E.g. は、ば and ぱ), some of the kana's in your list i wouldn't really deem that similar. (e.g. けにこ)

This is just by the shapes, not the sounds. Those three were kind of similar, but probably something only I had trouble with. Everybody's different after all.

Others are grouped together because they're semi-similar. け and に have lines on the left, こ and に both have the こ in there, i'm pretty much just grouping shit together for any reason. Better to have it than not.

Maybe dumb question but...if I buy the physical copy of the game for Vita, will I still have to do the captcha stage or will it bypass that? If I can just log in with a jpn psn account I will get pso2. Otherwise no.
Anyine have an idea?

It is a pain in the butt, and with the Vita, you have to reset the system and start it up under the Japanese language setting.

At least it kind of stops the whole cheating we've seen in the PSP era, what with unlicensed/used copies of the game.

First of, id like to say thank you for this guide and your efforts.

I've tried for a couple of hours or so now but i just cant get it to work so i would like to clarify somethings before i go for an allnighter with coffee *sigh*

1. I cant seem to figure out if there are spaces betwean some of the letters? or is it safe to just type them as they are without spaces and such?

2. Is it still viablo to do this or have they implemented IP blocks? sometimes when i feel i got the hiragan right the page simply follows up with an (25) Error and whants me to retry?

Or am i just doing it wrong? i.e too slow to find the hiragana within the timelimit?

PS: Deeply apologize for my broken enligh :c

blace
Feb 11, 2013, 03:12 PM
1. No spaces when you enter the hiragana.

2. There's a 2 minute timer.

basicly i'am getting the (25) error because i'm too slow then *sigh* but atleast i know why now.. gona try and speed things up a little =/

The keyboard on the lexilogos webpage uses what seems to be a very stylized font. Often times what you copy looks totally different when you paste it into the capcha, and it can be very hard to find the actual character you're looking for because of some key differences. (It's almost as if the lexilogos page has "cursive" Hiragana; if that's a thing)

That being so, I think that these online keyboards are actually better:

Hiragana IS the cursive kana

Katakana is the more rigid, sharp script.

There is a form of cursive script for kanji as well but that's not even relevant in technology.

Thing i got it working now *deep sigh*

It actually helps starting out with the katagana box first instead of trying to rush with the age/account/passwords and stuff (typical this didnt occure to me earlier...)

Still 2gb's worth of downloading left and i feel i'll probably going to pass out untill then so ill see you fellas online tomorrow (b.'')b

And again, tyvm for clearing up stuff for my tired mind!

Have you already tried using the resources in this stickied thread (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203925) for help? Are you also aware that you have about two minutes to get it right before it times out?

If anyone has a hack for the hiragana captcha's that would be epic. I think what's happening is that the captha's are done with php, saved in the session and then checked server-side against the input so I don't think there's any easy way around it.

Sorry I ninja-updated the chrome extension yesterday. For a day or so after it updates, it takes google a little while to sync everything across it's servers. For a technical explanation the version number in the database is different from the version number in the file and google returns an error. I was able to install it today, so you might try installing it again.

Also you can right click the captcha, hit copy link address and post it here in [img] tags. Someone should write it here so you can copy&paste it into the form.

Any idea how long I have to input the answer?

I just tried 10 different ones, in 30 seconds each (including typing the username/password) and I picked ones that were fairly unambiguous.

Still nothing. Tried Chrome, IE, I'm copy/pasting from the hiragana keyboard website... and always same error about invalid input. I know it's not username/password cause I tried entering those incorrectly and it took me to a page saying invalid login...

I'm not understanding why it's not working. I even did a few with friends doublechecking behind me and afterwards we stare and compare and it all looks good... And still, it won't do it.

Stupid SEGA, I just want to reset my skill tree.

So can anyone confirm if there is a time limit to input the 5 character captcha on the main site to register your account? I've been using http://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/hiragana.htm and i swear I would have gotten it right by now... (1 hour or so of trying)

One captcha session is valid for ~2minutes.

Basically, fill everything else first, then refresh the captcha and GO FOR YOUR LIFE!!!

Help! D: I'm trying to create a sega id and trust me I've done the captcha perfectly more than once but I still get an error message (I don't know what it says) every time I try. I've left the captcha blank and not filled my birthdate and got a different error on both times, so I have no idea what is wrong. Any help at all would be appreciated D: I made an account here because I don't know what to do...

Syklo
Jun 28, 2013, 05:41 AM
At the very least, POST THE ERROR (Even though it might not be relevant to captcha at all).

from what I can tell, it's likely you put in your birthdate wrong. It goes YYYY-MM-DD, iirc.
So if you were born in july 4th, 1987, you'd use 1987-07-04, not 1987-7-4. (i.e. DOUBLE DIGITS).

it could also be your password - it requires both letters and numbers, iirc.

IMO it's easier to just put on the japanese ime (keyboard) thing, press alt+shift then ctrl+caps lock (i guess its the same for every comp idk) to switch to hiragana and just type the letters in.

No kidding it's easier.
But that's assuming:
-You have asian languages supported
-You actually know hiragana and can type the right ones in, or:
-If you mean direct kana input (not romaji), that you know which key is which.

Actually, when I have time, I might put up a chart showing which letter-key represents which kana, so you can direct-input rather than copy paste.

That image authentication is just painfully mind-numbing to try and match up all the Hiragana and copy and paste, I ended up giving up on it, I'll just pray that it gets released out of Japan soon enough D;

No problem. XD No one is too nick picky about battles in this game. Since it's pretty easy once you get use to it. Also You can turn down the shades in options and that'll let your game run better, but at the cost of graphics. My last advice is that you should make a character first and then share your player ID(like the one in my sig) to your friend(or vice versa). Later as you two level you'll get badges that can be turned in for stuff. ( or google something like" how to friend invite pso2")

You're trying to do it on your phone? That seems like it would take some doing. If you on your computer, then there's the pso2 chrome extension (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pso2-extension/febdkhimnahpmjpbidcofjdpjjggojhj) for chrome which has a pop-up hiragana keyboard. It's not the best, but it's better than nothing. Also in general if you posts pics on this thread then generally someone can help you if they're on. I saw it before, but it was already passed the time it takes to timeout. Keep at it, it's frustrating, but possible.
