I could've tried, but I didn't think I'd be fast enough to tackle it.

Don't get me wrong; I've almost got Hiragana and Katakana down like second nature, but I still have the tendency to mix characters up, and I sometimes have to stare at a few a bit to figure out if it's one or another (me and nu in Hiragana, for example (め and ぬ respectively), are common offenders).
