PSO2 Chat Translator v1.8

What is this?
PSO2 Chat Translator is a simple tool that displays your PSO2 chat log in a separate window, and translates the Japanese messages into English (or any other language) for you using Google Translate, in real-time.

Why do I need it?
This tool makes understanding what's being said by Japanese-speaking players much easier for those who know little Japanese (or none at all). It saves time compared to copying text from the in-game chat window and pasting into a Google Translate tab in your browser. It can also show you the transliterated name of Japanese players, for example "ねこや" can be shown as the transliteration "Nekoya", which may be easier to remember if you're not accustomed to Japanese characters. You can also choose to show a transliteration of Japanese messages (romaji) rather than a translation.

How do I use it?
You must have chat logging enabled in game for it to work. Once you've downloaded it (and either installed it or extracted the zip archive), it's as easy as running it and watching the chat messages appear. Note that it will only display messages that appear in the chat after you have opened it, and will not show any messages from before it was opened.

What can this translate?
This tool will only translate messages from players in the standard chat channels (public, party, team and whisper). It cannot translate messages from NPCs, partner characters, nor system messages, as these do not appear in the chat log files. This does not interfere with any modifications you may have made to your game, as this itself is not a modification to the game.

How do I know it's safe?

The tool and its installer have been analysed by several anti-virus and anti-malware programs, and the results of the scans are shown in the Jotti malware scan results in the downloads section below. None of the programs detected malware.
The tool does not require administrator privileges to run, so it only has limited access to your computer.
The only access to the internet is to https://translate.googleapis.com and https://www.googleapis.com to acquire the Google translations, https://api.cognitive.microsofttranslator.com to acquire the Microsoft translations, https://api-free.deepl.com and https://api.deepl.com to acquire the DeepL translations, and to http://www.bakagaijins.com/chat-translator/update.xml to check for updates. You can therefore set your firewall to only permit the tool access to these domains if you wish.

How do I remove it?
If you no longer want to use it, you can remove it easily:

If you installed it using the setup installer, run the uninstaller from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
If you used the zip archive, delete the files from the folder you extracted it to.

Prerequisites
You must have the .NET Framework 4.5 installed to be able to run this tool. The installer will make sure you have this and download it if you do not. If you will be using the Zip archive, you can download the .NET Framework 4.5 from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=30653).

Download
The translator can be downloaded either as an installer capable of putting shortcuts in your Start Menu and on your Desktop, or as a standalone program in a Zip archive to be extracted wherever you please.

Changelog
[spoiler-box]Version 1.8 (June 26, 2021):

Added support for Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. You can choose which game to translate from the "Options" window.
Added support for the DeepL translation API (https://www.deepl.com). An API key is required to use this service, but a free subscription is available.

Version 1.7 (May 1, 2019):

Added support for the GROUP chat type. The colour can be customised from the "Options" window.
Updated Microsoft translation to use version 3 of the Translator Text API.
Added support for the Microsoft transliteration service.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.

Version 1.6 (August 6, 2016):

Added an option for which transliteration service should be used. The Google (Free) service provides high-quality transliterations but may stop working at any time. The Unidecode service provides low-quality transliterations.
Added automatic detection and correction of damaged configuration files.
Added a translation mode option to allow translations of only Japanese messages, or translation of all messages. When set to "Auto Translate Everything", the translation service will automatically detect the source language - this will allow translations from other languages, such as French, Russian and Spanish, into English. Alternatively, this can be used to translate English (and other languages) into Japanese, for a Japanese user of the tool.
When the "Language" option is set to "Japanese", the user-translation window will now convert from Japanese into English.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.
Miscellaneous bug fixes.

Version 1.5.2 (January 3, 2016):

Fixed a bug that meant chat messages stopped being displayed when a message with no content was handled (messages filtered by chat channel, or containing only a lobby action that gets removed).

Version 1.5.1 (January 2, 2016):

Fixed a bug that meant transliteration was being performed by Unidecode, when using the Google (Free) service. Unidecode should now only be used when using the Google (API Credentials) and Microsoft (API Credentials) services.

Version 1.5 (January 2, 2016):

Rectified an issue with failing translations.
Added support for the official Microsoft and Google translation APIs, both of which require credentials to use. If you don't wish to use the official APIs, you can continue to use the old free service, by selecting Google (Free) in the Options window. Please be aware that the free service may stop working at any time.
When using the official Microsoft and Google translation services, transliteration will be performed by the Unidecode library, which unfortunately provides less accurate transliterations than those from the Google (Free) service. Neither Microsoft nor Google provide transliteration services through their official translation APIs.

Version 1.4 (October 12, 2015):

Rectified an issue with failing translations.
Improved the translation options by allowing customisation of how player names and chat messages are displayed, through the use of macros.
Added hotkeys to scroll the chat log up or down by one page. They can be set up at the bottom of the "General" tab in the "Options" window.
Added options to filter which chat channels are displayed.
Added an option to hide unrecognised and invalid chat commands.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.

Version 1.3.1 (April 9, 2015):

Hotfix to rectify an issue with failing translations, caused by Google Translate requiring a CAPTCHA.

Version 1.3 (August 9, 2013):

Colour chat macros such as {red} are now hidden from the chat window.
Improved the ability to remove the letter 'w' from Japanese messages before translating - it will now remove the uppercase letter W, as well as the full-width characters 'w' and 'W'.
The overlay chat border's opacity can now be changed separately to that of the chat background, using a slider. To disable the border in overlay mode, simply drag the slider to the far left (transparent) side.
It’s now possible to keep Japanese chat messages in Japanese. This may be of use to people who wish to use more advanced translation programs, but find they are unable to use their translation program with PSO2/GameGuard.
Added a new textbox to the user-translation window, showing the transliteration (romaji) of the Japanese translation.
Updated the list of known lobby actions to include many of the more recent ones.
Miscellaneous bug fixes.

Version 1.2 (May 3, 2013):

URLs in chat are now converted into clickable hyperlinks.
Added ability to change the translation language to something other than English.
Added a user-translation window to let the user translate a message from their own language, into Japanese, and then see a translation of the Japanese back into their own language to verify it.
Added an option to show/hide chat commands, such as “/la dance5”.
Added an option to remove the letter “w” from Japanese messages, prior to translation. This can improve the accuracy of the translation.
Added an option to put chat messages on the next line, beneath the name.
It’s now possible to show chat messages as both the translation and the transliteration (romaji/romanisation).
Changed the overlay chat border to a more PSO2-like version, created by Gama at PSO-World.com. Thanks!
Miscellaneous bug fixes.

Version 1.1 (March 5, 2013):

Added overlay mode with transparency support.
Added support for message transliteration (romanisation/romaji).
Added always-on-top option.
Added font family, size and style options.
Added update checker.
Public chat colour is now used for all chat channels when “Display messages in colour” is unchecked.

Version 1.0 (February 25, 2013):

First release of the program.

[/spoiler-box]
I hope this will be of use to many of you, and please do let me know if you encounter any problems or have any feature suggestions!

Thanks,
Tanerinn.

Thanks. This was written in C# using the .NET Framework 4.5. I'm not too sure what you mean by realtime read/translating, as I believe this is already what it does! :D

Yeah, it would definitely be nice if it didn't constantly connect to Google Translate.
It only makes a very small HTTP request and receives a small HTTP response per message, much less than the full HTML of the Google Translate webpage. Is there some problem with connecting to Google? :-)

Mybad, I misread the part about getting chat after you opened it. xD

What about translated output?

like I say something in English, then type -t or some other flag/command and it puts the Japanese text of what I had just chatted in the clipboard or automatically sends that text. (quick enter / paste / enter)

Also, do you think you can play the audio files from the google tts api to allow players to hear what is being said without having to minimize the game? Also, toggle it on/off with a chat command?

Sorry if I'm just dumping all these ideas out there. I've been wanting something like this for a wile, but I'm way too lazy to make it.

I'll certainly be thinking about how to offer translations from English to Japanese, and the use of a flag in the in-game chat window sounds interesting! I'll add both this and the text-to-speech feature to my to-do list. :-)

Thank you for making this

It'll be helpful to many, and I'll surely use this to get a slight understanding of some things that Japanese players say when playing with them(especially for some words I don't know ;_;).

Nice, I was thinking something that would do exactly this would be possible. Thanks for making this!

I would imagine it would be simple to make one for the other logs as well, right? So you can see exactly what item you picked up, sent to storage, or won from a scratch card.

This tool translates chat log in real time, am i right? There was a similar one for PSUJP. Pretty much useful thing.

One for PSU also had translations for things like picked up items too. (Though for this it was not using google, but some psu item database)

My market database tools already does this for me, but it's not perfect.

The biggest issue is there is no record when you turn items in for CO's.

A font choice, maybe, but what this nice tool sincerely needs is a font size option.

Yes you're correct in that it translates the log in real time. As above, I'll consider adding support for the other log files including showing the items that were picked up, although I might have to rely on Google Translate for the translations unless there's a PSO2 database somewhere.

is there any way you can have it output raw text?
As Klypto said, what do you mean by this? Do you mean you'd like it to output a translated chat log file alongside the original files?

I've got a suggestion. You could maybe add font choices to it.
Done, will be available in the next version. :-)

I was thinking about doing this myself as well, since essen's PSUJP translator was so awesome. But alas, lazyness.

Downloading immediately, ありがとう!
Thanks! I wasn't aware that a similar program had been made for PSU (I'm pretty new to the Phantasy Star series!).

For future release- possibly an "always on top" option, along with a transparency slider- I use 3rd party tools to have your program on top of PSO2, right above the normal chat. However, I can't seem to make it transparent.

Just a thought. :)
Always on top will be added in the next version, although transparency is slightly harder so it might take a bit longer.

Only thing I'm curious about is a lot of japanese players will "slang" or speak in shortened speak, so I'm wondering if google translate is smart enough to pick that up or if it just comes out scrambled.
Although a lot of translated messages are still difficult to comprehend, overall it works very well to get the basic meaning across. The custom translations section of the options dialog allows you to define your own translations, which you could use to set up better translations of slang terms (although at present it will only work on exact matches). :-)

Does this also translate events and messages for the game itself that end up in your chat box?
Unfortunately it can't translate the event notifications nor other messages outside of the four main chat channels (public, party, team and whisper), as the other messages don't get written to the chat log. Messages from NPCs in the main chat channels aren't written to the chat log either. :-(

Klypto

Would it be possible to get it to show the text as Romaji?
I see that on google translate, I can put "お疲れ様でしたー!" and click on the "Show Phonetically" button, and below the box it'll display "Otsukaresamadeshita ̄ !"

I don't really need this feature myself, but I have friends who only know random Japanese from anime and such, so they can't actually read any kana at all. (Well, I lied. One of them has seen よろしく so many times they actually can read that...)
But since they'll know what "Otsukare" means, if they can just read that, they can figure out what it means themselves.

I figure that for those who can understand at least some of the basic communication could use this, as "-were cheers for good work!" sounds pretty awkward.
And putting a rule for all different forms of a word can be tedious (and sometimes you just don't know what kind of slang the players would put)

Of course, I suggest this as a toggle. And probably not the default setting
(Like how you can have the names normal, or transliterated)
(Make the text Google Translate, or Phonetical Readings)

Another suggestion would be;
Is it possible to make a field on there where you can type something in english, and have google translate return to you their Japanese translation?

Pretty much, for instead of keeping a google translate webpage open, and alt tabbing to that to attempt a half-baked Japanese Chat;
I was wondering if your program could just support something like that.
(To expand on this, perhaps make it automatically add the Japanese translation to your clipboard, so you don't even have to Ctrl+C? Lol.)

I don't know much about coding however, so if this is incredibly hard/time consuming (or impossible?), then simply ignore this request.

----

Otherwise, I came to say good job with this, I can definitely see this as being handy.

I'd like to second the suggestions of:
Always on top + Transparency
More Font Choices
Reading the ActionLog as well. (I think this should be either in another tab, or a sister-program. Something so it doesn't flood the chat window with "Found 34 meseta"

Fun fact- Tane actually planned this feature in the very early versions too- that it's not in (yet) is completely my fault. Sorry! I figured that most of the replies you'd need are things people have set up as autowords, yes/no/okay/thank you and such. Obviously I was wrong and I'm sure this along with all the other requested features will be added soon. ^^ (actually transparent overlay mode is done and being tested now wooo!)

You are obviously free to do whatever you want, there's already roughly 1370 pso players using "my stuff" and not all of those people are people who cheat.
As I said in my post earlier, I just thought I'd let you guys know that there's another version of a tool like this since I know a lot of you do not visit the website where I release my things.

Btw, just out of curiosity, is it the fact that I released the trainer or is it because I, myself, have been playing around with the game that makes you be like that?
If it's the latter, then I'm guessing you're not using the English patch either, right?

Klypto
Mar 4, 2013, 01:18 AM
I don't mind all that translating and using a deICEr on the game files to poke around and find things since they aren't really concerned about that, in most cases that only impacts the client and not their server / peers. It's the trainer-like stuff that bothers me and leaves me cautious about it all.

I'm assuming you're bypassing GG to run the trainer, which I'm not cool with.

I know it wouldn't make any sense to bypass GG for a translator app, but it's a psychological trust issue along the lines of this guy is already beyond limits I'm comfortable with, so I don't know what he puts in his code.

It's interesting to see that you guys are against botting though.

Both modify the client via a third party, which is generally (i say generally since I can't read the ToS...lol) against a ToS.

I don't really need this kind of software, but great effort!

The english patch doesn't modify the client, it modifes some of the language files saved in the data folder.

This is very different from a hack that bypasses security meant to disable it, and modify values that aren't supposed to be.

Also, if I recall correctly, Sakai is aware of the english patch, and has no issues with people using it.The English patch does modify the client. I think you're mistaking client/server-side information, here. The files you paste into the win32 folder modify the client.

Furthermore, Sakai has never said he was okay with people using the patch. In fact, SEGA has altered the ToS to make it clearer that any third-party alteration not only was against said terms, but also altogether illegal.

Using the English patch is not akin to cheating morally, but legally, it's just as bad.

As the Hrith points out, it does modify the client.

SEGA encrypted their files, which is a security measure meant to block things like this since it modifies things in the client that aren't supposed to be modified.

Sakai is aware of it, and obviously do not like it since they have even tried to change the encryption a couple of times.

Version 1.1 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!

Please check the first post (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204921)to get the latest download links, and check out the new screenshots to see the additional features in action. The changelog is below.

To adjust the level of transparency in overlay mode, use the background slider on the "General" tab of the options dialog. This will only change the transparency of the background of the tool, not the text that it shows. To change the transparency of the text, go to the "Display" tab of the options dialog and set the colours for each chat channel - if you click Advanced on the colour picker that opens up, you can control the transparency using the slider labelled "A" (alpha channel).

Please note that overlay mode can only produce an overlay on top of the game when it's running in a window, which rules out an overlay for fullscreen mode. However, you have the option of running PSO2 in virtual fullscreen mode, which produces the same results as fullscreen but is actually a full-size borderless window - meaning overlay mode will work with it! To enable virtual fullscreen mode, follow these steps:

Open your Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLINE2 folder.
Open the user.pso2 file in a text editor such as Notepad.
Find the Windows section that looks something like this:
"Windows = {
FullScreen = false,
Height3d = 480,
Height = 720,
VirtualFullScreen = true,
Width3d = 640,
Width = 1280,
},"
Make sure FullScreen is false and VirtualFullScreen is true. You can leave the rest alone.
Save and close the file and open up the game!

I hope to get text-to-speech and English to Japanese translation into the next release, as well as the possibility to use a different language than English for translations. As this version includes an update checker, assuming you enable it in the options dialog you will be notified when the next version is released.

How do you get chat logging enabled!? Im stuck at this part

nvm! working! new problem how can i have chat and game in same window!? windows 7 here. I want the chat translator beside chat but if i click on game it just goes into background
You can now have the translator on top of the game, either using the "Display the window always on top of other windows" option or by using the new overlay mode.

I have it on top using a window manipulation tool, hack it. GG won't care about something like that.

Keep up the awesome work, Tanerinn!
Thanks! As above, you can now do this without any other tools.

Would it be possible to get it to show the text as Romaji?
I see that on google translate, I can put "お疲れ様でしたー!" and click on the "Show Phonetically" button, and below the box it'll display "Otsukaresamadeshita ̄ !"
...
Is it possible to make a field on there where you can type something in english, and have google translate return to you their Japanese translation?
...
Otherwise, I came to say good job with this, I can definitely see this as being handy.
Thanks! Romaji can now be shown rather than the English translation using the "Translation" tab in the options dialog. As mentioned earlier I plan on adding English to Japanese translation in the next version.

Thought I would let you guys know that I've created something similar to this as well.
It's nice to see an alternative and it's always good for users to have a choice! Good luck with yours.

I don't really need this kind of software, but great effort!
Thank you!

As always, if you have any suggestions or need any help let me know! :-D

Cheers,
Tanerinn.

Just wanted to say, love the romaji and overlay update.

Would it be possible to display both the translations and romaji? At the moment I am forced to open two instances of the chat translator, manually change the translation settings every time I open it, and overlay only seems to work for one window.

Please keep up the good work!

I would love to take a look at the code for educational purposes, perhaps even help out? Would def be something nice to add to a resume!

PSO2 Chat Translator isn't currently open source, but I may reconsider - if I do I'll be sure to update the thread with a link to the source. ;-)

I'm sorry to hear you've been having problems with it. I'm aware of a few bugs relating to the settings which have been fixed in the development version, and I hope to have it released soon!

Version 1.2 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!

Please check the first post (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204921)to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.

Changed the overlay chat border to a more PSO2-like version, created by Gama (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/member.php?u=34014) at PSO-World.com. Thanks!
Miscellaneous bug fixes.

The user-translation window can be toggled either using the button on the main window, or through a configurable hotkey that you can set up in the options dialog. After typing a message in the user-translation window, the Japanese translation is automatically displayed, and then a translation back into your chosen language is shown underneath for verification. The Japanese translation is placed into your clipboard automatically, so you can paste it into the game without hassle. To close the user-translation window, you can either press the configured hotkey or just use the Escape key.

Your suggestions and feedback are welcome! :-D

Cheers,
Tanerinn.

Version 1.3 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!

Please check the first post (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204921)to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.

Your suggestions and feedback are welcome! :-D

Cheers,
Tanerinn.

I haven't looked into this much but there is the possibility that it could be done. If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7 with the Aero theme, you may find you get better performance if you disable desktop composition (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/22803-desktop-composition-disable-program.html) (the Aero theme) while running PSO2.

While you can use the chat translator in regular fullscreen mode, you'll either need a second monitor to look at it on, or you'll have to Alt-Tab out of the game. The chat translator's overlay mode can only overlay on top of a virtual fullscreen window or regular windowed mode, for now at least. :-)

A minor suggestion of mine: Could you allow an option to swap the order of appearance for translated text/romaji? For me, it just feels more natural having the japanese text come first and then the translation.

I have a question: is it possible to turn off team or other chat modes? I recently joined a team and my goodness they are such chatboxes, lol. I turned the team chat off in the option settings in the game, but the Chat Translator continues to pick up those messages. Is it possible to turn those messages off somehow?

If not, that's okay, I was just wondering. Maybe it could be a useful idea for when you update.

Thanks again!

without wanting to sound like an ass, but i would advise you on updating to w7 or 8 if you can, microsoft droped xp support and youll get more and more issues with app compatibility over time.

i know its horrible having to update to a new os when youre probbly used to xp, but if you can run pso2 on your xp machine, maybe a software update would be good for the overal windows experience.

If you downloaded it thinking it was not google translated then you were misinformed :P but, you can add custom translations, for example, you can tell the program to translate マグ to MAG instead of Mug.

AIDA Tanerin, is it possible to hide autowords, just like in the in-game chat? (and it would be awesome to go further and disable NPC/bots autowords from the chat too, unlike the in-game chat)

Also, dissabling the chat commands I still see my lobby actions.

my pso2 chat translator is crashing since update
This crash is caused by the RadeonPro (http://www.radeonpro.info/) graphics card tool. Please follow the instructions on their troubleshooting page (http://www.radeonpro.info/manual/contents/troubleshooting) to add PSO2 Chat Translator.exe to the compatibility list, and disable API detection for it:

Q- Some programs are crashing or misbehaving when RadeonPro is active and Global API Monitoring (http://www.radeonpro.info/manual/contents/about-api-monitoring) is in effect.
A- Add the executable name to RadeonPro Compatibility list (http://www.radeonpro.info/manual/contents/settings-compatibility-list) and set option Disable API detection for the item, that should fix the issue you’re finding with a particular program/application.

Yeah since last PSO2 update the program doesn't work anymore.. :(:-?

If you're unable to open PSO2 Chat Translator and the problem signature mentions System.Xml, it's very likely that your configuration file has been damaged.

To fix this issue, please navigate to the following folder in Windows Explorer (you can paste it straight into the address bar):

%localappdata%\PSO2_Chat_Translator\PSO2_Chat_Tran slator.exe_StrongName_yk5vp1dy5t0drngunsgz4lngwwaf uetq

Delete any folder you see inside of it, particularly the folder named 1.3.0.0. You will lose your settings and have to reconfigure PSO2 Chat Translator how you would like it, but it should start up again. :-)

Cause that would produce exactly the result everyone used to laugh their asses off about with babelfish back in the day.

^Problem? Can't open it? It crashed instantly?
Check this post, by Tanerinn (the creator of the Translator):

^Problem? Can't open it? It crashed instantly?
Check this post, by Tanerinn (the creator of the Translator):

I think he's referring to the fact that the Translator is not doing its job. Since the last maintenance it has completely stopped translating any messages.
I usually use it to turn the text into Romaji (makes it easier to understand for me) instead of english but it doesnt even do that anymore.
I dont know whats broken, but i'm sure there's quite a bunch of people who would be grateful for a fix, as this tool has proven extremely useful in communicating with the JPN players.
I have tried reinstalling/redownloading, deleting settings file and the other fixes found, none worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Could you add a feature which allows you to keep the Japanese text in names or messages, but also use romanization and/or translation? Maybe use checkboxes to do this instead of radio buttons. If "Keep Japanese names/messages" is going to be an option in the Translator, then it might as well be put to good use. I'm sure this would be a very useful feature for people who are also trying to learn Japanese.

EDIT: Also, does anyone know what system font PSO2 uses? I'd like to use that in the Translator if possible.

EDIT2: Could you also add a feature which changes the log orientation? As in the default has messages start at the top and scroll down, but have an option to make messages start at the bottom and scroll up, like PSO2's in-game chat log.

Have you tried tick the 'Enable overlay mode' and then shift the Background and/or Border bar to the most left (or adjust it to your liking)?. This option is in the General Tab of Option.

I have found myself very lost when trying to communicate with JP players. They say that Google excites everything. I have also found that Google does not translate very well. On many occasions I have had to pull up Bing's translator in order to understand anything. I would suggest adding an option to a preferred site's translation tool. Many who have used translation tools also suggest Babelfish over Bing or Google.

Well.. Honestly don't bother typing Japanese to them unless you really understand the language. The occasional了解 when they tell you what to do is good enough.

To be honest, none of the machine translations will be good since the sentence structure is different between eastern and western language. You're just gonna have to guess what they're saying. Doesn't help that most Japanese players DON'T talk in formal/proper speech and mix in slangs here and there that machine translators wouldn't "get it".

Gonna bump this thread and mention that using the translation aggregator program (http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php/94395-Translation-Aggregator?p=3648894#post3648894) can be REALLY useful with this as you can check multiple translations at once to get a better idea of what is said, as well as combine it with JParser and Mecab to look up the meanings of specific kanji. The latter in particular are very useful learning tools, provided you learn the grammar rules of Japanese some other way.

I actually noticed something earlier as I use this program for multiple purposes, like helping to keep up with fast moving conversations (using the overlay mode) since the standard chat window is fairly small and tends to fill up with non-chat related stuff like various system goings-on and not sure if this is where to point this out as I don't know if the Chat Translator's developer follows this thread but I found that while people using certain lobby actions shows up in the chat history, it doesn't seem to show when people use /la you or /cla you. Not sure if this is an oversight or it is intentional, but willing to bet it is the former.

Don't know if this is considered bad I read both sets of rules so I hope this is fine to sorta 'necro' this thread. Since this is a thread for a tool most players should be using, this really should be stickied or something.

Anyway recently my Chat Translator has stopped well translating. It now will instead do this:
[Untranslated] クラフトルームへようこそ elcome to the Craft Room.

What it is supposed to be translating is クラフトルームへようこそ to Welcome to the Craft Room. As I have a welcome mat in my room that will say:
クラフトルームへようこそ
Welcome to the Craft Room
For both English and Japanese players.

Even the "Translate to Japanese" window doesn't work. Which is what I used to create that message above. The last time this happened I had to update the translator by first deleting the old one then reinstalling the new one. But there hasn't been an update since I did that but I did it anyways and it still won't translate.

To tack onto this, Weblio's translation is also pretty good, compared to Google's. The website's in Japanese, but the only Kanji you honestly need to know to navigate the translation page is 英語 & 日本語. It also offers a breakdown of the sentence.

Just an FYI, but I'd still recommend Google translate when you're in the middle of a conversation with someone. Weblio takes a little longer to load.

Version 1.5 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!

Apologies once more for the problems with failing translations! This release should fix the problem again, and also includes the ability to use Microsoft Translator and Google Translate through their official APIs.

Check out the "Translation service" tab in the Options window, where you can choose between Microsoft (API Credentials), Google (API Credentials), and Google (Free). If the Google (Free) service breaks in future, you can now sign up for the Microsoft Translator API, and choose the free subscription that allows up to 2 million characters to be translated per month. If you prefer Google's translations, you can instead pay per character translated.

Please check the first post (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204921)to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.

Cheers,
Tanerinn.

Please check the first post (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204921)to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.

Hm... this is a bit strange. The translator has translated three messages successfully so far, so it is working properly.

After that, though, it stops translating anything else (heck, messages don't even show up in the Translator's log anymore) and I do have Chat Logging in-game enabled. Tried it both with Google (free) and the Microsoft API. It's probably an issue on my end, but I'm a little stumped as to what it could be...

Thanks a bunch for the patch and hotfix, though, it's great that the utility's working again and there are alternate API to fall back to if the official Google translator stops working.

EDIT: It seems to specifically stop working after I switch blocks. Was working flawlessly for me when I logged into B-001 but stopped after switching to B-201.

EDIT2: Nvm. Restarted the translator after switching to a new block twice. First time it didn't work, second time it did, but stopped randomly midway through.

Really good work for creating this and maintaining it. I also agree that a donation button for the program would be great.

*On a side note, does anyone mind sharing some of their custom translations?

system messages/npc chat doesn't appear in chatlogs which are what the translator uses as input

It would be nice if we could get the name transliteration fixed. I would like to be able to recognize the names of people in my parties so I can address them individually without being forced to copy-paste their names one way or another because I can't read them.

If it doesn't work and you have a smart device, the new Google Translate app can use your camera to translate text pretty quick, almost on the fly. You could aim it at the screen, take a snap, rub your finger over the text in the pic and it'll translate it.

Right there in the main post.

Are you sure you're using the latest version? It's working fine on my end.
Though, I'm still having a problem where names in Kanji are still being transliterated in Chinese instead of Japanese.
Also, newer lobby actions are showing up in the translator window.
I doubt there'll be an update considering how long it's been, but it would be nice if there was.

Excuse me is there any possible way to get this to work in a backwards compatible way? I just tested this with a Japanese friend of mine who has not had the English translated to Japanese like we thought it should do by setting the language to Japanese instead. I don't know if there's a certain setting we needed to change or not. Or if this is a feature not yet implemented or brought to many people's attention. If so I would like to see to it that this is at least brought to the talented creator who made this helpful program. Thank you.

Version 1.6 of PSO2 Chat Translator has been released!

Please check the first post (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204921) to get the latest download links. The changelog is below.

Japanese players can now set the translation mode to "Auto Translate Everything", to receive translations from English and other supported languages into Japanese. :-)

Hello,

If you wish to use RadeonPro at the same time as PSO2 Chat Translator, please add PSO2 Chat Translator.exe to the RadeonPro compatibility list (http://www.radeonpro.info/manual/contents/settings-compatibility-list), and put a check in the "Disable API detection" box. :-)

PSO2 Chat Translator v1.6

What is this?
PSO2 Chat Translator is a simple tool that displays your PSO2 chat log in a separate window, and translates the Japanese messages into English (or any other language) for you using Google Translate, in real-time.

This is really nifty, however I find when I use it, it causes me to have lag in the game when people chat. Is there anything I can do config-wise to minimize that impact? It makes it hard for me to use it during the time when I'd want it most (EQ's)

considering the ChatLog structures still identical but this translator only listen to /log folder, you can create a symbolic link to /log_ngs using FileMenuTools

1. Install FileMenuTools https://www.lopesoft.com/index.php/en/download/filemenu-tools

2. Go to C:\Users\user\Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLINE2

3. Create Symlink by right click and select filemenutools submenu

https://i.ibb.co/K6BCxBT/0001064047.png

4. On symbolic target, make sure it's named log

https://i.ibb.co/x1dPXyp/0001070148.png

5. Once you finish, you should be able to see log folder with a tiny shortcut-like icon

https://i.ibb.co/KFpkJd4/0001081448.png

6. Restart the translator. you're done

aaand it still works

https://i.ibb.co/gygyhtP/0001050344.png

tl;dr

C:\Users\username\Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLIN E2\log_ngs -> C:\Users\username\Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLIN E2\log

--

p.s: AFAIK you can't create ordinary shortcut since it has different workflow in win32api. good lord windows still has symlink (which i thought it was only for UNIX-like)

I also noticed that NGS mostly have faster conversation flow (maybe if you're in crowded Block), and the translator will bypass them / and marked as [Untranslated]. this might the case when you need your own APIkey (but i haven't tried to use my APIkey yet) because the default key got rate-limited by google

If anyone have the source code please share it lel, these days we can use DeepL to translate with better average quality than google translate

I am providing this great software a free support. poke me on discord Reanbell#3988 since I don't really logged in in this forum much, I'll help whenever I am free

missed part :

2.5 : if there's already log folder (cause it created by default), rename or move it away

i've been so confused why i cant create log symlink till i realised symlink and real folder cant together in same place when i try move the log symlink into same folder with log folder

Why does this program and installer seem to trigger windows security so badly?

The installer was created using an older version of Advanced Installer, which may explain why there were more false positives for it. I've updated it to a newer version and re-uploaded the installer.

v1.8 of the chat translator itself (not the installer) originally had a detection by Microsoft Defender, but I manually reported this to Microsoft as a false positive detection, they reviewed the file, and determined it was not malware. The instructions given by Microsoft were:

Analyst comments:
We have removed the detection. Please follow the steps below to clear cached detection and obtain the latest malware definitions.
1. Open command prompt as administrator and change directory to c:\Program Files\Windows Defender
2. Run “MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -dynamicsignatures”
3. Run "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate"
Alternatively, the latest definition is available for download here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions

It doesn't translate to Japanese anymore like it says here https://puu.sh/Inwqo/a4e659756f.jpg

what i've noticed is that whatever you set the language to translate chat to is what the Translate to Japanese thing will actually translate to.

In other words, it's 100% pointless. If you set it to english, you can't use it to respond to JP players. If you set it to Japanese, you can respond to them but you'll have no idea what they're saying.
