View Full Version : who designed the costumes in this game?

it seems like 99% of the outfits are sexual in nature, perverted/just plain creepy

this one is kinda creepy, is it 'from'something? I mean whats this about. its not the most perverted one or anything but I just saw it in the lobby and im like...why is her underwear randomly showing

this isnt really sexual compared to other stuff, its more just stupid

[SPOILER-BOX]http://i.imgur.com/aiGWgQa.png[/SPOILER-BOX]

the annoying thing is they added the sexy outfits and now they could focus on adding cool stuff but instead they just add more schoolgirl outfits and wet towel outfits

Kinda tired of it, who agrees

For the outfit pictured in your post, don't blame the PSO2 designer for that. Blame the PSPo2 (Phantasy Star Portable 2 for the unversed) designer for that. Then blame the PSO2 team for bringing it in as a part of a promotion for the Vita version.

At least you're not playing Scarlet Blade. From what I've seen, the "sexual in nature" outfits there are much worse (aka "Can you even qualify that as clothing?") in some respects.

Although I will agree with you that the variety is lacking at times (I'd welcome more anytime), we could have it worse. Now, male characters on the other hand... More variety is a must, no ifs, ands, or buts.

EDIT: But yeah, 99% of the outfits? You're really blowing it out of proportion. You should've brought up the Rifra Biscana anyway. Have you even seen that one? It's from the same game as the one you posted (the Tsukino Yuzuriha), but there's even less to it.

Doesn't bother me any. That just ends up with me spending less Meseta to buy costumes. I'll buy sexy costumes for my character if I like the overall look of them, and I think a lot of people might do the same. For some people, sex appeal comes second, though there's most definitely just as many who are all over stuff like the infinite cleavage Ballistic Coat and pseudo-dominatrix Eretique Reine for exactly those reasons. But whether you fall into either camp, it doesn't really matter to me.

Agreed that males need more costumes, though. It seems that for every new male costume that comes out, two or three female costumes come out. Maybe the ratio isn't quite that bad, but it's really skewed. That might have something to do with there being female equivalents of most male costumes on top of whatever new stuff they cook up, which most likely is going to be for females anyway.

ScarredBushido
Mar 26, 2013, 06:14 AM

There is ONE thing that bugs me though. While a lot of the outfits aren't skimpy a lot of the mare sexual in nature and seem to exist or have aspects that exist entirely for the sex appeal. A lot of the skirts are really short, and stuff.

Also as much as I agree that Scarlet Blade is the most blatantly borderline porn game to come out recently it's obvious that they're marketing it specifically as as such. You're comparing PSO2 to softcore porn...

That doesn't change the fact that they're advertising it like it's a softcore porn game. Good gameplay is always a plus but that doesn't change the aesthetics of it.

EDIT: I have nothing against the game except maybe that the ads pop up way to often for my liking and make me scared someone will walk in and think I'm looking at porn. If the gameplay is good more power too them. I just won't be playing because I at least like to have the OPTION to have my character wear something slightly more modest (or be a loli robot).

This franchise doesnt sell itself from a gameplay side anymore. Once the people looking for good gameplay disapear and the activity shrinks in general. The only ones that'll still be there are anime loving and the perverted fucks. So expect the game's focus to stay and become even more towards these type of people. What i described seems kind of natural to me. its clear theyre listening to feedback. And when that feedback comes less from the peeps who are looking for serious/good gameplay, the outcome is easy to predict, unless the people running the ship have an actual principled sense of direction. I'd hope the latter is true

I realize now that the Scarlet Blade example was too far on the extreme side.

Even then, in my personal opinion, we're still doing better than, say, Flyff (despite the fact that that game feels like a dinosaur to me now; I think I was in middle school when that game came out). There's at least one class down all four disciplines that has... questionable armor designs (the female Knight armors tend to look like armored bikinis, for example, and I'm not even bringing the cash shop costumes into this yet). I'd also bring Tera into this, but that also might be a scratch too close to Scarlet Blade's side of the extreme.

The only problem I have with costumes, is that most of them are designed for short and flat characters.

I disagree though I respect your opinion nonetheless. My main (although not exactly a loli in stature (just don't call her short; she shanked me last time, so be careful) and most certainly not flat) matches that description to some extent, and she doesn't look good in various costumes, the Honey Jacket and the Eretique Reine being the worst offenders (not-so-bad but still not great options include the Ballistic Coat, Alph Lyra, and the Ol Brink (going off the names on Cirnopedia, so I'm sorry if they seem unfamiliar)).

Volcano Veil, for example

I can't find a costume by that name (if there is, I blame Cirnopedia). Do you mean the Crater Faddle? If not, then could you please point me in the right direction?

I forgot to respond to this by saying that a lot of the outfits actually seems to be meant for middle sized characters. I used to have a tiny loli and a few of the outfits look really weird. There are also quite a few I feel look better on taller characters, but that just comes down to opinion.

I will lend my Cast opinion to all this. When I see clones of these poor fools running around in dumb outfits it just makes it that much more satisfying to obliterate the meatbags. I also get to purge the occasional heretic Cast who wants to wear a dress.

There are some pretty awesome costumes like Guard Wing... which barely anyone uses. The skimpier ones seem to sell better, so we're naturally seeing more of those.

It's also somewhat justified gameplay-wise because it's not actually armor, there's units for that.

PSO2 is just as sexualised as PSU/PSP2 were. I suppose PSU was probably the start of it (with the 'sexy pose', bikinis, maid outfits etc), then PSP2 and Infinity went further with bath towels, Magical Princess etc.

I don't mind there being some vaguely sexualised outfits in the game, and at least it's not as blatant and in your face as something like the already mentioned Scarlet Blade (which is basically a porn masquerading as a game).

Remember though, PSO wasn't totally free of this. One of the HUnewearl outfits was nothing more than lingerie (the yellow/black one), and HUnewearls also had outfits with fishnets, hotpants and so on. It's just gotten more noticable with stuff like bikinis being added.

The costume designs are just plain weird in this game, but yeah, for female characters, pretty much all of them are also sexualised in one way, another, or one you wouldn't even think of.

The example in the OP is one of the more extreme ones (it's like a part of a floral-like outfit was literally cut out for no reason other than to show the crotch), but almost every other female costume also has either skirts that show off your panties just as well as that Infinity outfit, if not better, or just massive amounts of skin exposed for no reason other than to be exposed. And if not, you should still expect a hole somewhere where there shouldn't be one. Even Feeling Robe, one of the more "modest" dresses in the game, has your entire body covered and your hips fortified, but the shoulders are are showing in their full glory. Maybe that one is not sexual, but it's still retarded.

It's just a bit unsettling when you stop for a second and think "Why?". When I see those belt-things on Zeno's armor or propellers on Shina's and nurse's outfits, the answer is obviously "anime", but when skin is being actively flashed by your clothes, it just seems to me that it's because it's supposed to be flashed, not because the costume suddenly ended before reaching the character's breasts.

The news about male players being like 80% of the game's population, coupled with an increased amount of skimpy clothes and them becoming more skimpy don't help at all, and with new areas, bosses or anything at all barely ever coming out, while new revealing threads pop up at least once every month, I just can't shake the feeling that the real purpose of this game is to create a perfect waifu to masturbate to.

If that's not enough, all non-fetish female costumes are lazy remodels of the male ones. My girl character has a package that can rival Zeno's when wearing Adventoria, for example.

That's a lot of letters, sorry, but hey, I had to get it off my chest. And I'm buying a towel anyway.

While there are a lot of skimpy clothes not all are. And you can reduce the skimpyness of some, if you decide to wear the short and top body paint. But some outfits are just too much either way.

However, I think the wet bath towel is just pathetic, especially because there doesn't seem to be a male version. I don't know, when outfits like that start to come out and people wear them I just lose any kind of respect for that person. I mean, it just makes the people that wear them seem so desperate and sexually frustrated *shrug*

There's a male version (http://bumped.org/psublog/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Bath-Towel-M.jpg) unless you meant of the wet one, but I would like to add that technically the male version is already showing more skin than the female version... there wouldn't really be much room to make much of it seethrough. ;;

Well, I think a penis isn't as bad as everybody always makes them out to be.
I don't see why we can have a wet towel version that shows nipples and a lot of the breast (actually showing everything from what I can see), but showing a slight outline of the penis would not be excepted. All I am saying is a slight outline something like only showing l l would be enough.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it but could see why it would cause issues for them. Honestly I expect the nipple thing to get censored if the game gets released internationally.

There is always going to be Sexuality and sexism in video games because there is a HUGE demand for it and japan is probably biggest in that regard.
Which is why it's always worth discussing. :3

What we need are more equally sexualized GUY outfits. ಠ_ಠ

Yes. This.

I can think of ... one outfit that is relatively sexualized for males. Kind of. Not even.

Yeah, I got nothing.

The video game industry is ruled by males. Makes sense since we female gamers are a minority. Year by year this is changing, but still there's a long way to go.

Cannot blame industry for that, because we still are a tiny market and all is about sales.
And the few attemps to make "games for girls" that the industry have, show that programers think we all fucking like Barbie, PINK, teddy bears and that kind of shit.

But back on track, I don't think guys may enjoy to see dicks in the games as a commond thing. Or as something made to be sexy.
Plus, compared to us, most of males got low tolerance to the gay factor*.

*Most of us can see girls naked as a sexy thing and don't give a shit. Even lesbian stuff. Reality is, most of guys may complain about male nudity, or suggestive gay content.

PSO2 is a casual gamers playground at most, if people choose to take it in to overdrive like you can even do with FarmVille or MySpace then that's on them but I'm quite sure that in all MMORPGs, even the most populated ones (Like WoW), casual gamers make up the vast, vast, VAST, majority of the gamer-ship.

This is getting to be akin to the debate of 'homophobic males hate gay guys, but will watch lesbian porn.' It's a double-standard. It's why I tend to keep the company of people who are comfortable and secure in their own sexuality, or at least are open-minded enough to just have fun with their friends, regardless of what their sexuality is.

That being said, one of the starting outfits you can get as male? Pretty much a bodysuit with the sides cut out, random armour pieces? That's kind of gay. My kind of outfit :)

Most girls I know(Gay guy, ya know get the free pass) Are just as dirty as guys it's just not accepted en mass for women to be discussing guys like men discuss women.

It's not something new it's just women are taught to be ashamed of having those thoughts. While men are sometimes thought that but the media at large tells them by 9 that they be praised for doing the exact opposite. While women are taught to dress like sluts but not be sluts>.> America awesome. XD

In other words, there's a reason why there isn't a commonly known female equivalent for a circle jerk.(At least as far as I know>.> Maybe there is and I just need to broaden my horizon.) But hopefully you get the point.

More on topic, I don't mind most of the costumes in this game. Some, like the one you sighted, are obnoxious, however the I am going to wear a massively flowery bloomy outfit while still having my panties out for show has less to do with the fact the panties are showing and more to do with the fact it doesn't fit the outfits motif.

Aka outfits that are made slutty, for the sake of being slutty. They just don't look right. I still say they need more stuff like this.

When you ask most of them why, they'd give that generic answer like "oh, well if i'm gonna be staring at a character's ass for 2000hrs, it may as well be female".
Then they make costumes to accentuate that and people complain.....? like, really? I think Sega knows what they're doing, and it's sure as hell working to make money.

OP, it has a lot to do with the direction the franchise has been heading in since PSU. Ever since PSU, the designers have really embraced the modern "moe" style trends and anime fashion to reach a wider audience back home in Japan. I guess where it REALLY took off though was PSP2. Of course, one could argue that sexualized apparel is nothing new to the franchise seeing as Nei in PS2 wore a pretty kinky looking one piece(especially for the time) and that the Hunewearls in PSO1 were pretty objectified in general. Still, at least the franchise maintained some kind of visual identity throughout both those games, something that has since been abandoned by the current team.

When I see screenshots of PSO2, I see a typical asian produced free to play online game with the normal abundance of frills, cat ears, and bathing suits. Delivering a compelling, atmospheric world is no longer a priority for these people.

It's not just the over the top "sexiness" that bothers me, it's them always ruining otherwise decent designs by adding one extremely stupid thing to an outfit.
This is the more grating thing in my eyes.

Candy crown has those absurd side-flanges-whatever-the-fuck-they are that cause your character's arms to clip through them every time unless they have a V-shaped body. Equestio (the Humarl's outfit) has those enormous pauldrons that just look awful on any character with decently-sized arms (or, hell, they just look bad in general). Heretic Lord/Queen has a similar issue with whatever the fuck those cupholder things on the sides are.

What's wrong with just taking some reasonably nice-looking outfits and adding some sci-fi twists to them? I don't know why, but whoever designs the mainline outfits at SEGA has this bizarre hard-on for extraneous doohickeys that ruin what would otherwise be some really classy outfits. It's not nice.

I should note that a fairly sizable number of the outfits do seem to be designed explicitly to feature under armor as an option for characters who prefer to dress less skimpily (Mikoto Cluster, Tiger Pierce, Neighbor Quartz and Thousand Rim are the most prominent in this regard), and there is an equally large number of outfits that aren't skimpy at all (Adventonia, Heretic Queen, Serenia Coat, so on and so forth), which again makes this complaint seem a little fallacious. Yeah, most of the PSP2 ports are really fanservicey, but they came from another game. That's just how the cookie crumbles in this particular instance.

I've thought about it in the past, but it would be REALLY sweet if they gave us options for each costume to enable/disable certain features on said costume. Maybe a future update could bring it in. They do the same in medieval fantasy RPGs. Just look at Vol Dragon - according to anime style meter, every spike on his final form is a solid +1 bonus to style. It wouldn't make a difference if he and Quartz were PSO2 bosses or DQ ones.

*looks at date* well that was fast.

Sega releasing costumes as opposed to actual gameplay updates aside, I never understood why people (particularly those in the west) are so vehement over such outfits. All of you must not get out or play many games or something, because this is all fairly tame stuff. Complaining over "weaboo fetishes" on a Japanese game catering to its' demographic. Stay classy. And while we are at it, western games aren't much better. Flat schoolgirls or voluptuous sluts, take your poison.

You guys forgetting that those play-as-dream-wife creeps are literally 80% of the games population as indicated as poles?

Which is why 80% of the new outfits are for girls.

And all of said outfits are really for japanese men that play as girls that have sugar coated fetishes? D:

So yeah they're DEFINITELY getting money.. you have no clue how much these dudes spend on their objects of affection. D:

I'm looking at it from an economic perspective not an obsession one. I'm not surprised that a fan was obsessed enough buy that many albums. I'm surprised that someone bought that many albums at all... what purpose could they possibly serve?

EDIT: Now that I think about it it was probably to intentionally skew the sales... which sounds a bit silly.

I find it funny how the Lamia set, probably the most conservative Caseal set in the game, is also the most badass... and it was actually pretty damn popular for a time.

I could use a little less fanservice with the female outfits, but I'm not tearing my hair out over it (probably because my main is a guy... and a guy who is not allowed to wear the man-towel ever at that.) Or maybe we could use a few less skirts in particular (we still don't have a space catsuit or something like that.) But then again, I'm kinda biased because I have a female character designed to be elegant/badass/occasionally androgynous rather than sexydorable. *Incoming facepalms?* Also a Killbot.

The Ranks set turns your caseal into quite a tank, there's also cosmetic magazine clips dangling off in front.
