I'm a bit confused. You can switch classes in pso2, but since we only get one free mag we can specialize for a melee or range mag unless we buy a second mag. What's the difference between having two characters, a hunter and ranger, or using one character, but leveling hunter and ranger classes on that single character? Is the difference only having access to the specialize subclass like gunner ect.

Title should use switching not swtiching.

The latter get to keep all previously-learned PAs. Also, the latter have access to all quests that have been unlocked. You can level the low level class by feeding them COs. If you create another character in the same account, the only thing you can benefit is shared inventory (so you can give the equipment previously acquired), and a free mag; quests need to be unlocked again from the beginning. If you create a character using new account, basically you start from scratch

Creating another character costs money, aside from the new character slot coming out with Dewmans sometime soon. The two characters, on the same account, have the ability to share their storage, meseta bank, and lobby actions. Might also share premium/shop/room, I'm not exactly sure.

If you have all your classes on one character, you have the benefit of choosing subclass options. On Ranger, you can sub a maxed Hunter and get huge damage bonuses, or sub Fighter on a Force for similar benefits. Furthermore, leveling any class after your first main will be much quicker, considering that you can pump through early levels using client order EXP. You won't need to re-unlock anything, so your low level classes can abuse all of the client order at the get-go. You also won't have to spend money on re-obtaining accessories, hairstyles, etc. but will need to pay for a mag.

If you create a totally new character, you will have another free mag, but will have to level all your desired classes over again, and re-obtain PAs. You have the benefits of shared storage and bank, effectively making any gear/monetary gains on your main character applicable to your alternate character. This applies to TACOs, as well; you'll be able to do twice the TACOs a day. However, if you need more mags, or inventory expansions, they will not be shared across characters as far as I know.

If you create totally different accounts, you will have two characters, and two mags, for free. You'll have to switch accounts for switching characters, and any gear/monetary gain is exclusive to that account. If you get a Psycho Wand on your HU/FI account, you won't be able to transfer it over to your FO/TE account. Keep in mind that if you're only levelling two classes per account, and assuming that weapons for every class drop in an equal distribution, only a third of the rare weapons you do find will actually be relevant to your classes.

In my opinion, if you're insistent on staying with multiple characters, make use of the incoming free character slot. Multiple accounts is the free alternative, with several extremely annoying downsides. Having multiple characters, versus one character, is a tradeoff of benefits. Single-character has time-saving advantages, while multiple characters has some useful benefits, given heavy play-time.
