I really need someone to help me understand the basics..I don't need items...just good friends to play with...I'm an old DC vet...looking for a few cool people to show me the ropes.

I'm a 10-year Gamecube vet and I help out a lot of new players.

My player ID is imadoctorjim, just like my name here. You can add me as a friend by searching for me at one of the purple Visiphone terminals (like the one in the spoiler box below)

I won't be on for an hour or two, but I can answer questions for you on here in the meantime. Anything pressing I can clarify for you?

Edit: Oh, you are on Ship 2, right?

Well as much as quick info goes;

http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-guide-list/
There's some good guides while your still learning what's what about the game on that website. (Also a sort of news site for PSO2)

http://cirnopedia.frostsabre.com/
Translation and Database of items and such, so it can be helpful as well.

http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207248
Useful tweaker to apply fixes and stuff, practically a replacement for the official launcher.

Two simulators, for planning ahead.

I find that at the very least, the above links are quite helpful for someone who is getting used to the game still. (And they remain useful)

To somewhat answer about quest progression.

You have 3 different kinds of quests in this game;

- Quest Counter. These you sign up for at the quest counter. You finish quests to unlock new ones. And at times you get a Client Order from Koffee to complete so you can unlock even more quests.

You generally want to open everything up. After that you'll pretty much only choose the efficient quests to run. Or ones that are required for client orders.

(And there are a bit of categories under the Quest Counter. Such as ARKs Quests, Free, Time Attack, Advance, Extreme, Limited, and Emergency Quests.)

- Client Orders. These are generally quests have an objective (Kill X Enemy, Find X Item, Play X Mission) that give a reward at the end. Either Meseta, EXP, an item, or even a partner card.
(Koffee also gives some unique rewards like more maps, a mag, pallettes, etc.)

Lots aren't really worth the time. But you have to do a chunk of these to unlock further orders and such.
You eventually get a couple repeatable orders that are great for EXP or Meseta, and you'll want to run those often.

It is nice to unlock all orders in case there are any events by Sega that require a specific one. (Campaign Quests, or the recent Bingo challenge)
Otherwise you have to grind hard to be able to complete them when they show up.

- Matter Board. This is the story of PSO2, so if your interested at all, you should proceed with this. You will either have to kill a specific enemy to get an item drop, or find a specific event tablet to show you a small story scene to proceed with this board. When you finish the key event spots (gold colored on the board), you can proceed with the Story missions at the quest counter.

The items dropped can have useful affixes, and sometimes there are Campaign quests for a certain story arc to be completed. So it can be useful to do these.
Otherwise, I know players who practically ignore the matter board completely.

--------

If your playing with an English translation, it's very easy to go through the game (ARK quests, Client Orders, and Matter Board) without any external guide.

============

Specifically for the MAG quest; (From Bumped)

Mag License
マグライセンス授与申請試練

REQ: Obtain ten フォンガルフの頭角×10 Drops from Fongalf
NOTES: These will drop in yellow boxes from Fongalf enemies.
REWARD: A mag!

I don't know if it changed since then. I haven't been a low level character since... a year ago when I started.
But if that's right, all you do is kill "Fangulf" over and over until you get 10 of the quest item drops from them. You then go to Koffee and complete the client order to get your Mag.

=====================

Anyway, good luck on PSO2.

The progression is pretty different from PSO1. Here are the steps to unlock new areas:

Talk to Rebecca at the counter by the gate. Do all the Arks Quests she has available.
Talk to Koffie (at the same desk as Rebecca) and get the Exploration Client Order for the area you're working in. This will usually involve doing some of the Arks Quests again with a time limit.
Once you finish the Exploration client order for Koffie, you'll unlock the actual "Free Exploration" Arks Quest. This is where you fight the boss to unlock the next area. (As with the other Arks Quests, you get this from Rebecca)

I don't think I'm forgetting anything... If I am, someone chime in. Does this make things clearer at all?
