how long am i gonna have to grind to get to the fun part? also anyone got any pso2 videos of them using pso1 weapons? i saw a few but not being used.

If you don't enjoy this sort of game from the get-go, you aren't suddenly going to like it later.

For the most part, it's incredibly easy to level if you follow Client Orders. There's tons of guides and resources. PSO nostalgia weapons vary from being awesome to just that, nostalgia and not 'good'.

The very nature of the game is grind, the joy of this game is just playing it for it's unique style and sense of self awareness. These days it borrows more from others but still.
