A good game trailer can be more than just an ad or promo for an upcoming product. When they're done well, they can excite, entertain, and even get you emotionally invested in a game. Sure, sometimes the game isn't nearly as good as the trailer builds it up to be and for the most part these are just commercial advertising that's convincing us to buy something, but that doesn't need to detract from the entertainment the video provides.

With that being said, let's share our favorite trailers in this thread!

Let me lay down a few ground rules first:

Try to stay on topic! I know some of these videos may remind of you of games you thought would be great but wound up hating - and let's be honest, I'm probably going to post that oddly endearing FFXIII International trailer at some point - but we're not here to talk about the games. We're talking about the trailers! Obviously there's nothing wrong with mentioning if the game did or did not live up to your standards, but if you really want to discuss a specific game, open up a new thread. That's what Off-Topic is for!

Please don't put too many trailers in each post. If you have an abundance of favorite trailers I recommend you post just a few up front and then go take a walk. Come on back later, check out what everybody else has posted, and then share some more. If you absolutely have to post a bunch of videos at once, please use the spoiler box tag when you can.

Commercials are also okay! Not sure if I have to mention this, but I figured I would just in case.

I think that's pretty much it! Have fun!

To start, I'm going to share a favorite that I'm sure a lot of you have enjoyed: The Legend of Zelda E3 2004 trailer.

This trailer came at the very end of what had been a relatively strong E3 press conference for Nintendo. No word had come out about the next Zelda game, and suddenly Nintendo was playing showing us footage of a gorgeous, action-packed new Zelda game scheduled for the Gamecube. (As history would show, the game had some hiccups before finally landing on the Gamecube two years later.) I remember sitting at my computer in my college dorm room and watching the E3 presser with my roommate. We were both floored by the trailer. This trailer (and the following year's Zelda trailer, which picks up right where this one left off) are both entertaining in their own right, and when I'm in for a nostalgia trip I'll watch them from time to time.

Okay, people: time for you to share!

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z.

Now listen, I know it's like LOL DBZ GAMES, I love these games, and I'm perfectly aware of how bad some of them are. Some are great too. This game, I'm still on the fence. HOWEVER. This trailer is so 90's, I almost couldn't take it seriously. But this trailer just gives me nostalgia waves.

The GTA 3 Trailer comes to mind. It's not flashy but it sets up the theme for the entire game, plus the opera playing the background sets up a sense of dissonant amongst the game's violent nature. Like you know these two things don't mix. I'm a sucker for that type of thing.

The Saints Row: The Third trailer is one for me. It helps that Kinzie's just typing away on her laptop in the middle of a gunfight (I know it would actually kinda make sense in context, but still.)

This narration almost makes me want to spend $600 on a game. They don't even need to show game footage.

More of a commercial than a trailer, but this one for Dungeon Siege 3 perfectly represents what I feel is what couch co-op is all about.

Did the original have a trailer? Anywho, who would have thought that this would start a franchise that many people would love? When I think of a favorite trailer/TV Spot, this comes to mind. Love the idea and the song to boot. There are more I want to post though. lol

Nice ones so far, everybody. Here are another two favorites from back in the day:

Lost Odyssey TV Spot

I haven't played the game, but the combination of the Jefferson Airplane song with this trippy-looking JRPG made for a great trailer.

Prince of Persia 2008 Gameplay Trailer

Another favorite mostly because of the music. PoP 2008 has a gorgeous art style, and the way they tie in the melody with the corruption/cleansing element to give a bite-size example of the game's narrative makes this one that I often come back to.

I always thought the series looked KIND of interesting minus the disney stuff. But I seriously never even glanced at this game until I saw the very first TGS trailer. Was just something about all the scenes they showed that made the game look mysterious and adventurous. And sora looked cooler than first game, and the new enemies weren't disney characters. (nor were a lot shown in this trailer.)

A week later I ended up renting KH1 and beating it before having to return it.

This was the most recent trailer to make me go "Holy Sh*t, this game is awesome" before the game even came out. It did not disappoint.

Halo 2 Teaser Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cojjVDdtB8g

C'mon, how many of us were psyched for the game when this trailer came out? I haven't even played the first Halo and still found this teaser really compelling.

Of course, the weird thing is how this scene changed by the time Halo 2 was released.

The teaser implies that the Master Chief has gotten back to Earth just in time for the Covenant invasion. The aliens are winning and the Chief's arrival is a surprise to the broken UNSC. The situation is so dire, that the most effective way to get Chief into the fray is by leaping out his ship and directly onto an enemy ship. It's a desperate and courageous move.

The way this plays out in the actual game is that Chief has been back on Earth for a while when the Covenant attack with a small fleet. The Chief is on a space station during the attack and rushes to disable a bomb the Covenant have planted. Once that's done, Master Chief - the most valuable asset in the UNSC's service - decides to jump out into space just in case he can guide this bomb (which is no longer a threat) into an enemy ship? And then by sheer luck, he guides himself onto a UNSC ship before getting sucked up by the Earth's atmosphere?

Basically, Halo 2 made it clear that the Chief wasn't driven to do crazy things because of desperate measures; he's just crazy and reckless.

I still like the trailer, though.

I always thought the PS1 commercials for FF7 where amazing. I remember being in the kitchen and fixing my self a bowl of cereal or a sandwich, then running back to the living room when I heard this commercial come on. The best part about it, is the melodramatic narration followed by "will never be seen in a movie theater!"

The recent Metal Gear Solid V trailer is pretty good.

The initial teaser for Mister Torgue's Campaign of Carnage was also pretty amazing.

Normally, trailers that don't show any gameplay are little more than a complete waste of time, but this was just a teaser and it's for a DLC that features probably the best character to be introduced in a Borderlands game, so it gets a pass - especially considering that, well, everyone loves explosions.
