Months after I initially brought up the idea (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210866), I'm finally writing a script for my Japanese CAPTCHA video guide. I was gonna wait until I had a draft done before making this thread, but screw it, I'm at work and I'm bored.

Anyways, once again, I'm gathering data on pitfalls that mess people up when they're getting used to the Hiragana CAPTCHAs. Here are the major ones that have been touched on:

★Characters that are the same except for a loop at the end:
め (Me) and ぬ (Nu)
わ (Wa) and ね (Ne)
ろ (ro) and る (ru)

★Characters that look different in print and in writing. (CAPTCHAs use "written" forms as far as I can tell.)
3009(ki) vs き(ki)
3010(sa) vs さ(sa)

★Other problem characters:
ら (ra), ち (ti), and ろ (ro)
わ (Wa) and れ (Re)
(Among others. Lots of characters look like a lowercase b with an extra strike added somewhere.)

★CAPTCHA has a 2-minute time limit before it will auto-fail you

Any other things that caused you to fail that you later figured out? (Or that you didn't; maybe I can help!) The more information I have, the more thorough the video guide can be.

Thanks in advance, people.

EDIT:
Thanks to Inazuma for pointing out that I had わ (wa) and れ (re) mixed up! I added them to the list of problem characters.

Thanks to Rehal for suggesting ろ (ro) and る (ru).

Thanks to AIDA for reminding me of the 2-minute time limit.

わ (Re) and ね (Ne)

わ is Wa
れ is Re

Looks like we have another example to add to the list, eh? (^_^);

Thank you! This is exactly why I made this thread.

Edit: Here's an idea I just thought of like 2 minutes ago... I'm thinking about making a Flash-based Hiragana flow chart to go with the video. Basically, it would ask you 3-4 easy questions, and then tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt what the character in question is. I won't go into too much detail right now, but the first question would be to pick a category of character like this...

This is just a conceptual example. "Pre-Alpha", if you will...

[SPOILER-BOX]"b"-like characters
らろちる

"h"-like characters
れねわお

"t"-like characters
もてす

"trinity" characers
めぬあ
At least, that's what I call these. You know, like...
3022

"simple" characters (a single line that does not loop intersect itself)
しつへひん

"pair" characters
はなけに
[/SPOILER-BOX]

I know the term "flow chart" doesn't sound super exciting, but if I can taxonomize everything in a way that makes sense, it'll be very fast and effective. There's no doubt in my mind that this'll be VERY useful, just whether I'm willing to put in the work to make it make sense and easy-to-use.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Would you use this if it were an interactive tool?

Had no idea there was a time limit.
