View Full Version : PSO2 So, what IS a support partner?

Lore-wise, what is, exactly a support partner? Is it some kind of robot?

Yeah, JP reviews at 4gamer often seem to complain about how there is virtually no atmosphere.

Hah, this is kinda why I've yet to make one for my 2nd char. Something doesn't sit right if it's a tiny living thing that's gotta be cooped up in my room. I'd feel terrible already since I sort of neglect my current SP when it comes to sending it on it's little quests. @_@;

I was expecting something like "A miserable pile of secrets" myself!

It seems like it's meant to be a small robot built to serve you and look like any race you want it too, but that's really just players filling in the blanks. Sega hasn't said shit and probably won't for a long time, just like when they added dewmans. A whole new race, where did they come from? Nowhere apparently. They're just here and there's virtually zero acknowledgement of that fact from anyone but the players and the marketers.

Dewmans are like space mexicans, they come to Oracle fleet and steal the traditional jobs held by the original three races. And do them better, too, as they deal more damage than even Casts. However, due to lack of healthcare, they die in one hit.

ARKS' line of thinking is "Maybe if we ignore them, they'll go away", that's why there's no mention of them anywhere. But they can't get rid of them, either, because they are pretty useful. Though they are already treated like 4th members of ARKS in the opening movie, so it may be too late anyway.

Who are Support Partners, though, I have no idea.

I dunno, the updated pre-character-creation video felt like they just pulled a retcon and decided that Deumans just always existed like all the other races. Given that it's Phantasy Star, they're probably just genetically engineered. (As opposed to Phantasy Star Portable's version)

In the update that introduced dewmans there are a few cutscenes with patty and tia talking about secret labs, which is probably where they'll take the dewman story elements, but they don't even imply that they're related.

They just say "a secret lab? would a government ever conspire in secret? I don't believe it!" Seriously I can't even conceive of how terrible this story is. I'm like the monkeys staring at the monolith in 2001.

To be fair, "a secret lab?!" would fit right in with PSO Episode 2. But seriously, it's like the people behind PSO2 are trying their best to incorporate the worst of modern anime into the game.

"Advanced" experimental (robo)genetical branch off primary 4 races (like Newmans from Humans), whose basic idea is sacrificing general strength (which is why they are small, it takes a lot of time for them to take out mobs and they can't do most of things full-right Arks can do) in favor of high adaptivity and learning potential (ability to switch class by just switching a weapon, ability to use any equipment at any experience level, much faster experience income).

Or just Beasts that can't make rebellion.

Yeah. What the hell was up with that?

Sega...

It's still annoying how we're obviously meant to experience story quests and cutscenes BEFORE we unlock new areas... or pretty much every content. Falz, for example.

As for Dewmans, I assumed they were biologically engineered humans, like Newmans.... but made with Darken genes.

But the support partner just doesn't make sense. I think I should've made it into a tiny robot so I could pretend it was some kind of toy....

If they were normal sized you could simply assume they were npcs, just like Afin and all the rest, with the difference that they're fully customizable.

In fact, I kinda wish support partners were like that, given that there's no explanation for their small size.

Anything that I can buy from other players is game for me. So let's hope SEGA releases just that.... and doesn't make it as expensive in mesetas as some emotes are.

Tell me about it. Rappy pets would be THE BEST.

All I can do is have my character wear that moving rappy hat and tell myself it's a tiny rappy pet. I called it Gigabyte.

Heres what I think is is up

1.) Dewmans are actually Darkers posing as humans.

2.) The lab and corrupted sect of ARKS R&D Department is a cover up for said inserted Darkers disguise.

3.) SPs are actually robotically modified children that were abducted

According to Patty and Tea they're from the "void facility" like Mags. Newmen are probably the same as they've always been but have casts ever really been "explained", beyond being androids, in any game though?

Support Characters are the real hunters of the ARK forces. The are constantly working more hours than the player, they get stuff, they don't sweat or complain about leveling. We're just the lazy secondary characters compare to their awesomeness.

Even in PSO, they are just that - androids built as slaves or other kinds of servants to humans. Their inability to use techniques, though, is played in the story, in the "It's photons, I won't explain shit" way.

And PSO newmen are genetically altered subspecies of humans, a lot smarter and inherently much more competent when it comes to handling elemental techniques; however, these genetic modifications come at a price, and newman's lifespan is usually short, and death can come entirely unexpected at any second.

Seems like enough backstory - it's very short, but somehow manages to give you a convincing reason why are there so many newman lolis. But you can't even expect that much from PSO2, best that you get is "no clothes because photons".

Just asking, since if they didn't care to explain those two in PSO2, we shouldn't expect them to elaborate on Dewman either.

No, they're some sort of combination of humans and darkers created by the void facilities or something.

Xion is the time lord.

Zyrusticae

The story specifically mentions that secret experiments have been underway involving the infusion of photons into various living things, from humans to dragons to darkers. Dewmans are heavily implied to be the result of such experiments, and are explicitly mentioned to have appeared purely because of time travel shenanigans (that is to say, in the original timeline Dewmans weren't even on the table as a possibility). I have no idea if it's a desired result by Xion or just a side-effect of her crazy misadventures through time and space, but I imagine it's going to be a big sticking point as time goes on (especially for Episode 3, when beasts come into play - that is going to be a bit more difficult to explain than just "yeah, we infused humans with darker photons").

Support partners, on the other hand, are just... kind of... there. I'm sure the Support Partner quest description at least tells you something about them, but, well, I can't read that much kanji and nobody seems to care enough to translate it...

The Deuman NPC (Io, is it?) has a field event where she tells a story about Deumans being created. They're apparently made from a combination of biological material gained by ARKS. The Void Lab combined things like dragon skin and darker remains to make Deumans. She has no memories prior to just springing to life.

Support partners... I'm not sure about. Haven't checked.

Think about all those code captures and dragon egg code collects for a bit and things really do start fitting together. Before the void facility stuff I was wondering what they were doing with all those critters.

I think Franka is just a crazy chef but I wouldn't be surprised if she's some sort of agent. >_>

Yeah, and one of the first ARKS quests is a rappy capture. This also explains the influx of rappy suits.

Both Newmans and CASTs were relatively new creations in PSO's timeline. It made sense for their origins to be addressed throughout the story as the mere existence of those two races led to a whole lot of political and societal struggles. (For instance, we learn that inbetween Ep. 4 and Ep. 3, many CASTs had been murdered for petty racialistic reasons to the point it was being referred to as a genocide. After the sad incident came to a close, CASTs were renamed into "Androids" to have them seem more "alive" pressumably.)

In PSO2, those two races have been around for at least a few decades or maybe even centuries, and have become an integral part of society (Take Regius as an example, who even appears to be the leader of the Pillars), so nobody wouldy really feel the need to ask about their origins, just like you don't go around asking people where their cats or dogs came from, or why Jews are suddenly living peacefully in Germany.

That excuse doesn't work for Deumans of course, and I didn't dwelve into the story deep enough to really say anything about that. Hearing Xion say that they weren't part of her calculations has me wonder if their origins will ever be properly addressed though. The race must be quite new either way as Io feels compelled to explain her racial background to us in the first place.
