View Full Version : >_____> I actually have a question about a gaming laptop

Sooo the other week I stopped by the local wallyworld (Walmart) and bought an i7 Dell laptop with Intel-4000 HD graphics. It seemed to play some games alright, but I did not have a chance to install PSO2 to it. My main aim is to play Phantasy Star Online 2. On a side note, it does play PCSX2 games quite nicely....

If I decide not to keep it (XoticPC, powernotebooks or NewEgg being my first choices), do you have some recommendations on a low priced gaming laptop with dedicated graphics that will run PSO2?

Thanks!

Well I'm using this for when I want to play on the go or just keep PSO2 running when I play different games on the desktop. http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/

For the current price point and for whats inside, its quite a steal from what my pals have been saying.

Otherwise you could try going here just to confirm if your current laptop can meet the system requirements: http://systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

Wait, have integrated graphics chips progressed far enough to be considered "gaming hardware" or did you just get scammed harsh?

+1, Intel's integrated graphics suck.
I wouldn't say your laptop would run PSO2 very well with a graphics chip like that....

Should have gotten one with a GTX 760M-770M graphics card, GT series are fine as well or a AMD 7670M or higher, HD intel integrated is designed to do simple program work and such but not for mainstream gaming.

What exactly is your price range because pc laptops can cost a lot? I mean if you don't care if its refurbished you could get something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233017R

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y500-i5-3230M-1080P-DUAL-GT650M-SLI-6GB-1TB-Gaming-Laptop-/281231262186?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item417ab081ea.

Honestly though you probably don't need anything too special as my hp pav g7 runs pso2 pretty well and its really nothing special.

intel hd 4400 runs pso2 fine.

getting a "gaming" laptop without an actual dedicated gpu is like asking to get burned, no matter how well some game run on those intel pos, you will soon run in problems with anything that unlike pso2 requires something more than a toaster

intel hd 4400 runs pso2 fine.

It does but he wants a laptop that has a standalone graphics card.

I play the game on the mobile processor with the intel HD 3000. It can handle the game as long as the shaders are off. I expect the laptop posted will run the game fine, just don't expect any visual candy.

I feel like a lot of people are both overestimating PSO2's requirements and underestimating an integrated graphics card. Don't get me wrong, integrated graphics cards suck, but this is just a bit ridiculous.

I use an HP Envy dv4. It uses an integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics 4000 to be more precise) and I run PSO2 on standard settings (in the tweaker, Simple Render Setting is at the middle, Texture Resolution is set to High, and Shader Quality is Normal). I run the game flawlessly. I get zero lag and the game runs very smoothly. I can actually push the render settings a little higher, but then it starts to get a bit choppy from time to time.

My post is particularly aimed at jooozek because the person he responded to linked a laptop similar to mine, if not a little better, and I don't play the game on low graphics with no shaders.

maybe tell us your resolution, framerate and stuff that actually is some indication and not something subjective as "zero lag" and "game runs very smoothly", i've read posts where people argue there is no point in having more than 30 fps because the human eye can't see more so i wouldn't be surprised if you were running it at 720p in 20 fps

here is something of actual substance:

I have a intergrated HD 4200, I can only run it on low settings with medium texture detail. Lags during PSEs and tech spam.

You guys sure do jump the gun and start bashing immediately. Shit, not everyone is fucking computer savvy. Calm your hormones people. Lol.

You definitely don't wanna go looking for gaming laptops at Walmart. As someone said earlier Intel HD Graphics is more for like work.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834198039 my friend got this one but you can't downgrade to windows 7.

As said, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck with a desktop PC. Any time a laptop looks like a good deal, a desktop can be built with similar power for cheaper.

But you can't exactly bring a desktop with you to a friend's house, or school, or wherever.

If you're a student and want a laptop for gaming AND schoolwork, as a student who had a non-gaming laptop separate from their gaming desktop it worked out much better IMO.

Regardless, as far as brands go Lenovo are pretty boss - resilient, powerful, and cost efficient (they use [or used, I'm not sure if they still do] the same model I used for schoolwork on the ISS, actually). They also have options to downgrade OSes without a bunch of bloatware installed, just your standard laptop software (battery monitor, etc.).

I believe its 60 fps, because there is a very big difference between running pso2 at 30 FPS and then 60 FPS+.

i know, i'm just saying there are nuts out there that keep saying there is no difference between 30 and 60 fps or that human brain can't perceive more than 30 fps
this is always a good read

Pretty good read, yeah. I think 60 FPS is smooth enough to not irk you, and and anything in the 50s is also more than enough in pso2.

Ignoring how the game runs above 60, I agree. Looking at the game, I could deal with it being 30 fps. For normal gameplay, there's not much reason to ask for more.

Unfortunately, this game actually *does* move a bit faster with higher framerates.

And aside from that alone, it loads very noticeably faster consistently with higher framerates.

But I stand by the fact that if I didn't care about TA whatsoever, the only thing that would ever bother me would be load times. And I can certainly put up with those after successfully completing Sonic 06... which ironically was also made by SEGA.

That is true, but without capping the framerate in this game, your gpu will run constantly on 100% workload. I just tried it again having the framerate uncapped, I get a nice high framerate but my GPU temp skyrockets to 80C, and the fan spins like a chopper. You definitely do not want to do that on a laptop/notebook.
Having the game running capped at 30, 60, 90 or even 120 fps just makes your system run cooler, it is something worth considering, especially during the summer time and it actually save you some electricity, if anyone cares.

On the topic of frame rates, it's worth mentioning that having more creates a buffer. The more frames there are per second, the less noticeable that one missed frame per cycle is gonna be.

Husq is right though, unless you're running a very clean, and very cooled computer, you'll be running hot with the frame rate too high, so this doesn't really apply to people like my self on low end computers.
