Gear gauge has to be full for the boost after countering.

That purple sheen is when you have Gear.
Melee alot with the Katana to fill the gauge. Just guard to counter and go purple anime hero mode.

Just need to start holding shift at most half a second before the attack connects with you

The purple aura means you filled up the gear gauge by doing attacks

The purply aura comes from the counter attack, not the block, and only happens if your Katana gear is maxed out.

As for timing... have you ever played Dark Souls? - It's kind of like they made block and parry the same button, but you get the parry(just guard) if you block inside the parry window instead of holding the block button, and the counter is the riposte.

Snow Banther's always fun to practice on since you can chain-block his combos.

Rocky as well, with his wind up punches and grabs. its easy to see them coming.

I would suggest this because Banthers don't take 10 minutes to wind up one punch before falling on the ground for another 10 minutes.

I don't know it's name or where it's from originally (I'm really new) but on Atrocious Ocean it spawned a giant golden-armored centaur boss with a ton of weapons. He was fantastic katana practice for me, with lots and lots of well telegraphed melee attacks to counter and an elevated face I had to jump to hit.

I strongly suggest getting Just Reversal because it seemed like all his moves sent me flying if I messed up and took the hit, and he's so aggressive you will take more hits if you get knocked down.

Hatou is the fastest way to build up your guard. At least, for me.

Depends on the situation. If there are 3+ targets, Kanran can be faster. Otherwise, yes Hatou is the fastest.

Dark Souls? oh okay. . .

I was gonna recommend God Hand Dodging routine. . .

(how I mastered every parry/dodging I-frames in every game. . .)
