Possible Bug or Bad Translation in Client Orders

Marlu's client orders Let's Master the Rod & Let's Master the Talis don't seem to work for me. I played them using only the appropriate weapon for each order, on hard with a S ranking for each and none of them have been completed.

So what gives?

I think you need to bring Marlu with you, if my memory is right.

She was with me, forgot to specify it. The quests were for 1 person and no other NPCs were with us.

Yes, can't use a Rod without being a Force as far as I know.
