We finally get our first glance at PSU: private server! Which is a private server currently in the works. This is the first time we've seen PSU run online in over 2 years! So I'm obviously excited.

That's quite a fine job they're doing. Didn't think they would go as far to bring the good ol' Casino Voloyal, Falz tomb and so forth. Looking good, and looking forward on that too.:D

As much as I want to say this is a great success, I just can't. This is what the EGS Team had done years ago, in 2010 to be exact. So until I see any progress on the difficult plateaus the EGS team encountered I will air on the side of caution and assume I will never play PSU again.

I have slightly more faith that this will be far more successful than what was done before.

Keep at it! I'll have an ear to the ground.

I'm happy to see this is a dream come true and hope this will come a reality to all of us here and for those that had access to private server self. They should include the Real PSU veteran to beta test and give out feedback on any current error that we may face with the server and game and have some real programming experience to help them run the game and make it fully functional

Yeah until they get past the issues that EGS ran into, I am going to be less optimistic about this. If they do get past those issues then I have hope for this. They are also doing this in C over the Erlang that EGS chose.

I've talked to the people doing this, and I will most likely be helping them out with the combat related stuff. For example, PA modifiers, variance, enemy stats, and damage calculation overall. Assuming they get that far. Also, with the offline mod team having the data for the Japanese content, I see no reason why the content (obviously translated) could not be added to the game. Although there would need to be some type of download. It would just have to be something the two teams would have to get together on.

I'd like to see more overall progress on the server itself before we worry about the games balance. Since there's some glaring issues that need to be addressed about the game, it's going to take some time.

Ideally, I'd like to see better class balance and some major PA adjustments along with mission enemy level changes. Maps that actually match our characters power, since so much the older content became forgotten over time. It would be really nice to see that once everything is working, we'd be able to run the older maps that are still worthwhile to the new AoI maps. Stuff like Pre-nerfed Moatoob maps with much higher leveled mobs comes to mind.

I don't want this to be just another slicer/shotgun/jabroga spamming contest. As much as I miss the game I'd like to have some variety.

That's one of the many reasons why I want to help out with the combat balancing. The slicers were fine, but there were problems with other PAs. For the most part bullet PAs were fine. The only problem I can see with them is making some sort of balanced difference between twin pistols and rifles. Many balance problems do come from fighter PAs, but most of them can be fixed with a simple adjustment of the PA modifier. However, a majority of the PA balancing problems come from techs. For example, ice techs cast slower than any other type. With ice being the overall weakest tech type, it's stupid for it to have slower casting times. Yet fire/ground are the fastest and the strongest. There are many other issues with techs as well. Something that I'm trying to figure out for the offline mod as well.

Okay so is this server PC only or will it work for PS2?. Just thought I could ask that here

Tyreek
Jul 2, 2014, 04:39 PM
This gonna be PC only. Sorry to say, but given amount of content that the PC version had, and the fact that PS2 couldn't take advantage of any newly released content, there's no way to put this back up on PS2 and keep things 1 - 1 without having an entirely new disk of this content converted for PS2. Which is impossible. Same with 360.

So there's no "Blue Burst" edition of this game that's just a simple download-and-play? Bummer.

If the issues with PSO2 don't clear up soon, I might actually give this one a try. I didn't even know there was a PC version, actually; I wound up skipping PSU entirely because I thought it was an X360 exclusive haha.

Words cannot describe how happy I am that I had a random urge to google "PSU private server". I really hope this gets going. PSO2 is absolute garbage, and I miss this game. Tried to get PSP1 working over PPSSPP but alas, it refuses to work. Played a little bit of the offline mode, and it just made me realize how much I missed this.

Best of luck to the developers. PS fans will love 'em forever if they pull this off.

Speak for yourself, I've always loved PSU. Even when I can admit it had a pretty awful launch, I still loved it and was having a blast. PSO2 has gotten worse since it launched, as far as I'm concerned.

Following what Oku said, let PSU fans be happy their game is coming back. Seems like most of us who loved original/AotI PSU have been disappointed with PSO and will get to have fun in Phantasy Star once more.

Also, Ranger could do without Ranged resistent enemies and made the Rifles and Laser Cannon a bit more useful since the Shotgun is so OP anyway.

It would be impressive and great if they managed to get the server up and running with the original AotI intact.

It would be unbelievable and hella hype if they managed to somehow add in the the work and content from the offline expansion mod thingy and implemented it into the server.

Though, it seems kinda too early to say at this point.

Which is what EGS allowed during testing. I believe they were going to allow it anyway because it does no harm. Not sure what Tony and them think about allowing character swapping and the such. On EGS there were dozens of Sonics running around lol.

I wouldn't exactly say that. When you only have 5-6 people working on the project it tends to take some time. The team is currently focusing on things that were never really worked on the EGS. To be honest. the progress is going better than most think. Missions are currently being worked on as well as enemy/player stats, and damage calculations.(enemy/player stats, PA adjustments, and damage calculations are something I'm personally working on)

People constantly ask to help, yet never follow through with helping if they are given something to do. I've actually started up a portion of my part of the project that I could use help with, yet nobody seems interested. People seems eager to "test" the server, yet if you give them actual stuff they can help with they turn away. For example, my project thread on the private server forums has over 300 views, yet nobody has offered to help even though I clearly say "if anyone would like to help, let me know." Maybe I would have better luck with that here on PSO-world?

Anyway, if anyone here would actually like to help me with my part of the project send me a PM. I can give you instructions on what I could use help with.

That is the whole point the major issues that stopped the egs server are not even in the sights of the team yet, sooo as I said before I would not get my hopes up for it being finished any time soon or at all.

Trust me, the team has access to everything the EGS had, and talks with members of the EGS team. Even Agrajag, the main person working on the offline mod project helps. I'm in the IRC with Adam, Tony, Agrajag, Mikuru and others everyday. I can assure you the team is working on it 110%. Some members of the team will even spend 24+ hours at a time working on it.

I can understand why you as well as others feel like you do, but try and have a little bit of faith in the team. I can however, say that I was on the same boat when I first heard about it, and before I joined the team. You are correct though, it will not be finished soon. We will work on it to the best of our ability. However, the more people we can get to help out the better. We will need people to test in the future, but for now we could use people that can have extensive knowledge of the game itself, or have other skills that would be vital for the team.

I never doubted people were working long and hard on the project but the fact of the matter is most people know there are some serious hurdles the team has yet to encounter and that these hurdles are what left the others PSU sever projects in the dust. Until I see progress on things that were an issue for servers such as EGS and nyuuniverse I will continue to believe that we will not play the game in full form ever again.

I don't know about other people, but I can't say I would be very interested in devoting a large portion of my time that I'm very skeptical about. Multiple people have asked this question in one form or another: "Will this team be able to conquer the problems that defeated previous attempts by other servers?" Unless I missed a post, this question has always been avoided, and never answered. All I see is "We haven't gotten to that yet." That to me says that this team isn't confident that they can solve those problems. If they could, a straight answer would be given. Hell, even a, "We're not positive, but we have some ideas and think we can make it work where others couldn't" would be a sufficient answer. Nobody here is looking for any promises at this point. But it would be a pretty asshole move to get people's hopes up when the team isn't confident that they have even the ABILITY to get the job done, let alone the drive and time to actually do it.

A less resource heavy way is to develop a chat/shop/inventory interface. Think PSPortable 1 between missions, but with a chat room.

That's a tough call the character wipe that happened recently was because of an update. I'm assuming it will happen again when they're implementing more changes to the game.

I've fallen asleep many of times runnin with friends!** ill use this exp to help out in any way I can. Pretty funny bug report sofar! There doesn't seem to be an invisible wall preventing enemies from entering the previous room during a mission. I would say that regardless of what happens in between now and launch, there's a 99% chance that they will do a full account wipe if/when the game transitions from beta to a stable release. Some games allow people's data to transfer from beta to live game, but that's not as common as wipes upon release. A player that's playing for progression now and for the foreseeable future is almost certainly wasting their time.

I would check out their twitter or forums for info. There are a lot of things available, and a lot of things that aren't. And with such a small team, it's impossible for them to set a deadline. It would be best to just check in on development periodically and see where things are at.

Ah yeah, I didn't expect it to be anywhere near completion. I'm just glad that there's a project going on at all for this, I remember the first time someone tried to develop a private server, they reached a sort of dead end and scrapped the project.

A few maps are playable and free to playtest. You can now exchange partner cards to other players. However email feature doesn't work. Writing message on your card doesn't save either. Nor will it tell you where your friends/acquaintances are online. Clothing and parts are now working. You can level up and the lv cap was dropped to lv 40. Shortcuts work as well (might not save).

Either way, I did give the server a go the other day during maintenance as I had PSU installed already a while ago and seeing at it was a 2MB download to get on the servers I thought:

"Why the hell not?"

I had the game set up already from when I was playing PSU offline a while, back but it seems all of the settings in the server were completely done and made the game play/look horrible.
Only played in full-screen with no options for me to change it, and my right joystick didn't want to work whatsoever.
Might I add the full-screen resolution was horrid looking as well.

I am not sure if grenades are able to do splash damage yet and laser cannons can penetrate.
