What is everyones opinion? If it aint will anyone be using vpn's or just flat out quitting the game? I'd like to hear everyone's thought on this matter. :)

No, my connection issue is ISP related. Unless SEGA bought out my ISP on the DL to unblock me personally, nothing is going to change.

Weird thing is, if I tracert pso2.jp, my pings can't even leave the country.
If I ping ship 08, My pings reach all the way to Japan, then it enters an infinite loop.

Hmm, just maybe, maybe the maintenance would solve the issues.

I wouldn't expect the upcoming maintenance to have any real impact on the connection issues that so many non-JPers are experiencing.

I've mostly moved on; I do skim these forums on a daily basis, and do a quick tracert in order to see if anything has changed for myself (it hasn't, of course), but that's like 5-10 minutes of my time, usually.

But TOS or not if sega didn't want us on there eventually they shouldn't have allowed any foreign traffic at all from the start / beta / launch day, period. :/ So in a nutshell if your'e do something like this to your fans then just block all foreign traffic from the start. Because if you let people get engrossed in your game then shut them out w/o a valid reason or explaination your'e just gonna piss em off more in the long run. :/

Oh Yeah we've been block from PSO2. I can go to any of the sites on SOJ's website except PSO2. I'm sure they'll say everything is working good after the maintenance but our connections will still be blocked.

All those in the JP region that are blocked will be fixed. We're stuck using pingzapper and the like to get connected until they block those too.

You are making it as Sega was a bad company that just, out of a whim, banned most of, if not all NA people from entering the server and how Sega is losing on a 'large' player base of paying customer.

You have to look at in on another perspective, that their server was attacked for almost a week (just imagine how many profit they lost that time, time constraints, pushed schedule, and overall headache from the fiasco)

Maybe the attacker originated from NA? Or at least he rerouted the attacks to come from NA anyway and blocking them seems to stabilize the server.

Remember, the NA block was not the cause, it was the effect.

Well it certainly is looking grim at this time. Without a doubt if we can not get on tomorrow after maintenance it is a wrap for us.

If SEGAs solution to all this was to IP ban us all, then they let the DDOSers win. Damage was done and not only did SEGA lose money in the downtime but most damaging they have forced them to totally alienate and completely turn their back on a HUGE portion of their fan base.

The sad reality is we live in a world of grief and terrorism. While their company was a victim, WE the fans were victims ourselves and if its SEGA's only solution is to IP ban everyone outside of Japan permanently we have been doubly victimized.

Nowadays these type of things are commonplace that ALL online services have to deal with. I can only plead with SEGA that they can see the wisdom in this and not punish and dismiss loyal fans that wholeheartedly support them.

For the sake of argument: If Sega did in fact IP ban us, they only hurt themselves in the end because people won't forget it'll be yet another strike against them with consumer confidence. Remember this isn't a localized issue.

Well, you say HUGE, but I think PSO2 income is 95% based in Japan. And the Japanese customers are demanding for quality service. In other words, prevent future Ddos attacks. I think the most effective way for SEGA to prevent attacks is to block foreign connections. Sad, but we can't really do anything.

Im not gonna debate talking about money here and speculate on what SOJ makes off non JP customers.

But what can be said without a doubt is that PSO has a HUGE fan base outside of Japan and that is undeniable.

If we are all made to feel like second hand fans and that we do not matter then why should we care anymore about a series that does not care about whether we exist or not?

Sad but true, lord knows we been ignored long enough by SOA and mistreated for decades like a red headed stepchild.

I love SEGA and the PSO series but quite frankly I would like to feel like my support and fan-dom was appreciated.

And we have ALL seen other online services have to deal with DDOS attacks and the best solution is not block everyone out side immediate area and cut yourself off from further promoting your IP.

That is not the best sense....at all.

Sakai said he loves the foreign fans and appreciates the international appeal of the game when I asked, but this DDoS thing is a new ball game.

If the quality of service is actually being hampered by said foreigners? It doesn't matter how he feels, losses need to be cut for the integrity of the game. Judging by the range of ISPs that are having difficulty...it seems woefully apparent that the US may have been source of said attacks...

BTW I didn't even mention "IP block", it may be some other countermeasures that prevent ddos, and as a result stops us from connecting as well.

They aren't going to stop a DDoS in progress, though they can weaken it. But they sure are going to make one less likely if you limit the exposure of your regional service to just your region and cut off outside connections.

That's why they are often done preemptively, instead of over two years into a game's existence.

An HK ISP originionally can't connect, error 247, but now can connect, from what I'm reading on their forum.
Apprantly, for the giant DDOS attack, that ISP had alot of BOT on their end, and the isp blocked it

Ip blocks aren't going to stop ddos.

Yes, but. If you're just filtering by IP address country code or somesuch nonsense, then it's obviously not going to do anything. Spoof and continue. What you can do, however, is go up the chain -- even if you can't identify where the traffic is coming from, blocking access from routers outside the designated region will indeed prevent attacks from reaching the server. That's where all the "backbone block" talk comes from.

Sychosis

This depends 100% on what type of attack was made. If this was a reflected attack, then no, no amount of IP blocks are going to help because the attacker is, for all intents and purposes, SEGA themselves.

What would help is if various telcom companies shut off their own traffic so as not to be complicit in an attack (and not choking out their own customers' bandwidth).

Because we also have people completely unable to connect at all with no other logical explanation?

By the way, hundreds of ISPs all around the world blocking their customers' connections at the exact same second as when the game servers went up and then denying any involvement does not count as logical. In my subjective opinion, at least.

What would help is if various telcom companies shut off their own traffic so as not to be complicit in an attack (and not choking out their own customers' bandwidth).
And, obviously, they all did that simultaneously, right after Sega said that the DDoS is finally ceasing, right? And not at any moment before that, when the attack was actually going in full force?

Besides, my mobile ISP is also blocked from pso2.jp. And has been since the start. I can say with 100% certainty that it's impossible to use it for a DDoS, with the rates that they charge for traffic.

Its not our providers considering that we could access the official website from the time they brought it back up after ddos to the time right before they brought servers back up.

That is not coincidence.

While is is weird that some are infrequently able to log in in some locations lets just hope thats because this is temp/ half ass block that SEGA plans on lifting after tomorrow maintenance.

Sega has put these measures in place dont kid yourself. I cannot blame them to get JP back up ASAP and to curb any remaining ddos.

But if we cant get back on tomorrow as SEGA starts compensation for those affected with premium services...then people are living in denial-land to think they are ever getting back on normally cause it was not all of our our IPs to block us simultaneously from official site right before servers went back up...trust me SEGA knows this.

Who knows, maybe they stumbled here to look at the general appreciation people in the US have of the game, and came to the conclusion none of us cared in the slightest anyway:D

Jokes aside, while I don't believe they're celebrating this incredible opportunity to get us filthy gaijins out of their beautiful servers, (okay, now jokes aside for real I guess), it does seem doubtful that in the current situation, they'll make the extra effort to get us back on the game, because they indeed have very little reason to.

I also never really thought of the maintenance as an opportunity for them to fix all of this, so I guess that's a no for me.

Telcoms blocking traffic is precisely what may have caused the attacks to abate in the first place. It wouldn't have been simultaneous. The game was down for days. I'm unsure what point you're trying to make about your mobile carrier. It isn't like botmasters kindly ask you to join the botnet and offer to cover the charges.

As for the website going down at once, there could be any number of explanations. SEGA may have migrated it alongside their game servers so the whole shebang could benefit from DDoS protection. The blocked traffic would have then also affected the website. They may be trying some redirect magic which made them accidently the whole launcher. You'll have an easier time finding out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop than getting SEGA to tell you what voodoo they are working.

Now, I'm a bit of a cynic. I don't expect maintenance to solve anything and anyone hoping it will is setting themselves up for disappointment excepting a few cases. But I will have a good chortle if this was all a big misunderstanding blown out of proportion by PSOW's need to hang themselves with their own knotted panties.

Is there any specific reason why all the servers are currently grey'd out as if the servers are offline during a maintenance?

It'd be a proverbial light yeah.

For better or for worse, people would at least have some semblence of what to do and can stop running around like a headless chicken, venting their frustrations and showcasing their withdrawal symptoms on the board.

The irony of this post is that you're off-topic as well, and you're also posting in caps AND being rude at the same time, which would dishevel people more so than get them back on topic, meaning you're being counter-productive towards your own goal.

That's 2 strikes. Let's not aim for a 3rd?

If you're that flustered by said posts, you're better off reporting them or at least being...oh I don't know...

Less irate?

Come on dawg.

That being said, I'll just reiterate. The forum is divided and is heavily tinted by negativity and pessimism. You're going to see a lot of opinions and stances, as well as arguements recycled over and over. PSOW is in full echo-chamber mode right now.

You're better off talking about the actual game, and not the evolution of which us players who can't get on have the misfortune of going through.

Yeah I know that's kind of why I did it like that. I'm just bored.

Got in via Tweaker? it's because we can't access the servers.

Hm... Part of me wants the current situation to stay just to watch psow squirm for months while I continue to play without a hassle and a VPN.

I wasn't able to login via tweaker. I got error 249. And also I have not tried to login via official game client. I take it if I can't connect to official site then I can't login.

Holy shit.
I went through the first 8 or so pages reading intently before MegaCocker2007 ruined his own thread and lowered my IQ by about 40 points. Good god man, I thought horribly irrelevant image macros from 7 years ago were phased out of people's vocabulary by now but here I am looking at this drivel.

You have a problem if you still think this garbage is funny.

As for the topic, I'm not optimistic.
