View Full Version : So, why Hebrew Punisher?

Most of the translations are great, but this one is very, very awkward.

I assume it's ヒボル - hiboru.
And I guess it's supposed to be either Hibol or Hibor Punisher, but not quite Hebrew Punisher.

ヘブルパニッシャー = heburu panissha~

Which does translate quite literally to Hebrew Punisher.

Alternatively, it's a Hebrew weapon that dishes out punishment.

Alternatively, it's a Hebrew weapon that dishes out punishment.

I think this was the actual intent.

I...I think.

One of my friends and I suggest that despite it literally translating into Huebrew Punisher; the intent was to say that it was a Hebrew weapon that deals punishment to gods because one of the interpretations he came up with was that Hebrew Punisher could be loosely seen as God Punisher or God's Punisher.

So really, Japan can't context well.

If it was really supposed to be a punisher of Hebrews, it'd be called ヘブル人のパニッシャー

I don't think noun cluster usage is very common in other languages, so the word 'Hebrew' here is strictly an adjective describing 'punisher' and not a noun being used as such.

Besides, I don't think it works on its own, it'd have to be "Hebrew people" or "Hebrew words" instead of simply "Hebrew" alone. Unless you're punishing the concept of Hebraism.

Unless you're punishing the concept of Hebraism.

I don't want to be the one to say it.

But I mean...

We're all thinking it.

It wouldn't be the first time

Stop right there criminal scum.

This thread is already thinly veiled in Godwin's Law as it is. Let's not pull the curtains wide open shall we? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hey now, in a game with an entire quest line called "Black Slaughter" is it really that surprising?

I believe it "could" be this way too, more broken up to this ヘ ブル パニッシャー =/to "The Bull Punisher". With the part sounding like "he" being the other way we say "The" like "Thee".

Nah Japanese use ザ for "The"

^Well for normal "The" I would agree with that. But since the name is in Katakana which is a straight trans over to English by sound and that Sega fails at separating names of weapons correctly can change how the weapon is named good or bad.

edit: well that won't work since "he or ヘ" in JP is ha with "a" saying it's name. then it might be "Hay Bull Punisher" or "A Bull Punisher"

edit: also it's weird that they didn't use ”ヒ” instead making it "ヒブルパニッシャー" which by Katakana that is more correct than "ヘブルパニッシャー" for "Hebrews Punisher".

This thread title reminded me of that movie "The Hebrew Hammer".

Probably one of the most random movies I've ever seen before. That movie is full of inside jokes that are easy to miss, not to mention it's just random as hell, lol.

None of this really matters to be honest, there's a lot of *deliberate* misspellings in the Phantasy Star Online games.

hebrew punisher is by far the most bad ass weapon name in this game... making knuckles as a weapon even more intimidating and gruesome.
