What happens is when a Pacman charges their attack if you hit pause during it, He ragdolls away. I would assume it had to do with loading a sprite in his attack. Unlike Game and Watch which was all 3D modeling.

The game would reset him once you resumed game so you wouldn't just floar away and be somewhere else.
