Hooray

When you are sad, nothing cheers you up like little furry things.

I've had mice, rats, and campbell's dwarf hamsters, but these are my first gerbils. I wanted some quite badly several years ago, but couldn't get any at the time.
I just got them yesterday, but I'm already quite enamored of them.

Fitzgerald - black male (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/black.jpg)
Hemingway - agouti male (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/agouti.jpg)
Fitz says grr. (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/black2.jpg)
Where are his arms!? (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/agouti2.jpg)
Sneak 'n peek. (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/peeking.jpg)

Gerbils seem to have two modes of operation: asleep, and constantly moving. They're already quite nice, and will hop up onto my hand if I put it in their tank. (In the store, Hemingway jumped from the cage to my hand, and climbed up onto my shoulder and sat there. How could I resist that?!)

I really really like Hemingway. I think I have a soft spot for small brown animals, especially brown rabbits. Hemingway is really cute rotis. They're both real cute. Do they make lots of noise at night? You must be real excited bout your new pets huh

Rotis

Nah, they don't make much noise at all. The rats are far noisier, since they like to wrestle at night.

I guess Fitz doesn't like the flash, haha. (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/snooze.jpg)

I'll put up some rat pictures soon. I lost a lot of my old rat pictures, but I've still got some good ones.

And maybe some cat and dog and fish pictures, for good measure...

You know, Rotis, I haven't really thought of mice and rats to be cute, but yours are. O_o

WHEW. Okay. I "threw together" an index of all of my rat pictures, which actually took like two hours, since I had pictures scattered all over my hard drive and various old web spaces, with multiples of some and others in the wrong format. (For some reason, I used to save my pictures as .gifs. Durr.)

But, here it is: more freakin' rat pictures than you can shake a stick at.

Las Ratas! (http://homepage.mac.com/rotis/rats/)

Wow, you've had a whole lot of rats Rotis. Pregnant dot picture made me laugh! 15 babies is a lot... And the pics of her babies were real cool to see, especially the climbing one.

Did you get Clem shipped to you?

I've never seen a rat like Pear, she looks really nice and interesting.

Your girl rats group pictures are really nice. Do they tend to stick together?

Think I really like Xae and Hemingway.

Hope salad doesn't see that, it'll make her want a rat...

I got Dot, Clem, Chester, and Ted all at the same time, all from the NY breeder. She came down to PA for a show, and although I didn't go to the show itself, we went up there to get the rats from her the day before. (As it turns out, it's a very good thing that I didn't go, since the SDA virus was going around; very airborne, very lethal.)

Shipping is possible but only done very rarely, to get unusual colors/traits from one coast to the other, etc. (Dumbos started out on the west coast, but eventually made their way over here.) Usually a bunch of breeders in an area will pool together if they want to get rats from far away, due to the cost and whatnot.

That group of girls I had was just wonderful. Dot, Clem, Pear, Bella, Rachel and Navi. They got along very well, and they all loved people. They'd run right up to you and start kissing your hands all over.
They also exhibited the phenomenon of six rats in a large cage all trying to sleep in the same exact spot, which always resulted in a huge rat pile.

Oh, and if you want to see more unusual rats, check out the AFRMA Standards Page (http://www.afrma.org/fancyrm.htm).
