afaik you technically never did; I remember the old days of grabbing the files from psu-mods and I'm assuming that never changed?

That's what i'm talking about. That's always been my method of using the english patch.

However, about 4 months ago or so sega changed something so basically if we manual english patch and launch the game with the vanilla launcher it will detect the english patch and redownload the original jp files.

Because of this we were all "forced" into using the tweaker if we wanted to use the core basic english patch.

The .bat method of launching the english patch has been posted several times in the past couple weeks. It does the same thing the SEGA launcher does to launch the game, but without the file checks. It's what I've been using ever since I got paranoid about all the bans that went out late last year and various GG shenanigans.

So no, you've never needed the tweaker to use the english patch.

there is no need for any .bat you just need a system variable and then add a launch parameter for pso2.exe

Haha yeah, I guess I should have figured that out from what I was pasting into the .bat file. But I'm lazy. xP

do that (http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3321645&postcount=272) now, obv replace the steam properties with shortcut properties, or keep in steam if you want to launch from steam

Can you show me how to do this? Can you link me one of those threads that teaches us how to do it? I would appreciate it.

Thanks, this ended up working for me.

I used the patch in your first link. Then I turned on the tweaker; installed the normal english patch. Then launched the game. Seems to work for me.

The Tweaker just automates everything, you never actually needed use it to play with the patches. It just made it really easy for anyone to patch and start the game even if they didn't understand the entire patching process (and even for those who did, it made life a lot easier).

As mentioned in this topic and several times in the past few weeks, you can launch it via 3 lines (2, if you set the environment variable -pso2 permanently, like joozek mentioned). If you want to keep the plugins (item translation, titles, damage parsing, proxy), then you can use the stuff I described here: http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231799

Personally I use the Tweaker to do all my updating and english/large/story file patching and just start the game with the batch file after that.

Issue with the English patch has been found, should be ready for use before the night is over. Thank you for your patience!

Also, the bat file (and the official launcher) refuse to start the game for me. I have no idea why, and it's also affected other people.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, a friend of mine is having the same issue with the launcher, but it works fine through the Tweaker.

I've been wondering, how feasible would it be to add a "launch through batch" option to the tweaker as an alternative form of launching the game.

Could be something completely unrelated, but for myself, when using the official launcher, when the executables receive updates, I have to manually add my pc's user to each exe permissions list.

Patches and the like on tweaker all show green.

All clear so far
