What caused Sakai to post this long ass essay regarding it?

Nitro Vordex

Here's the engrishy version. (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fpso2.jp%2Fplayers%2Fnews% 2F%3Fid%3D8274&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie=UTF-8) Looks like there were like a billion parallels drawn between PSO2's battleship, and the Battleship Yamato anime. Looks like some changes will be made before then?

Mar 3, 2016, 12:34 AM
As you told me on Skype, the Imperial Family Seal on the front of the ship was changed to an ESC-A logo instead as seen in the upload on the PSO2 youtube channel. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZEfHDVWBwQ)

I can't make much of the article, but it looks like the use of WWII stuff may have stirred some controversy.

Mar 3, 2016, 12:54 AM
It's kinda obvious, the ship is a national symbol to Japan and we're about to go all 9/11 on it. Japanese nationalists don't play if Sakai had to apologize like this

raialeus
Mar 3, 2016, 01:12 AM
Super short version is
"Wow Yamato"

"Wait why are we destroying Yamato?"

"Yamato is the symbol of the Japanese spirit and Navy power!"

"Arks are destroying the Japanese spirit"

"PSO2 is a Kor Anti-Japanese game"

But the super main argument here is the concern that the 十六弁八重表菊紋, or the Imperial Jp symbol at the front of Yamato would be a Breakable part.
It's also worth noting that there is some law in Japan that regards to using that specific symbol in businesses, some players brought that up, but the PSO2 team is not violating said law as stated by Sakai.

Derp, read the page more and Sakai stated that they are going to change the Symbol anyways in order to avoid any potential discomforts that the fans would have

If I'm going to say that I'm 100% surprised, I would be lying.
But, if I'm going to say that I'm 100% expected this, I would be lying as well.

You can already saw this issue spread on the moment it was announced on several YT videos. I guess the only surprise for me is that the paragraph from Sakai came a bit....late, I guess?

Well, it's on a different scale of offensive.

Yamato as enemies doesn't only have the possibility to rustle the jimmies for those who are from JP, but it can also rustle JP's jimmies as a whole itself. JP (AFAIK) still have a high nationality value among its citizens. Destroying a national symbol is a heresy.
That, and WW2 is still a sensitive issue even to this date.

Actually I'm currently living in Tokyo.

When I relocated here for the first time, about 1 year and half ago, I was very surprised by the blasphemy that is Can Kolle.

I mean, I'm an Historian, and I was thinking how unpleasant would be for the son of a deceased Japanese military that was fighting, let's say, in the DD-Shimakaze, to see his father ships represented as a barely non-porn loli anime girl with a perizoma and a 3cm long skirt.

I think having a ww2 ship fighting with cannons and such would make me feel less offended.

That's my 2cents tho'.

I mean... Pretty sure the Japanese made Yamato fight to the death in WWII.

"Yamato was dispatched on a one-way mission to Okinawa in April 1945, with orders to beach herself and fight until destroyed protecting the island." Granted it didn't get that far, but they still ordered it on a suicide run essentially. Yamato never made it to the beach and was sunk instead.

But think of it like this. Some of us wouldn't care, but what if an American company made a Statue of Liberty boss or Twin Towers boss? People would have a fit.

Seems like a more appropriate link would be a shooter like CoD having you bomb two towers that belong to the "enemy".

I'd argue the twin towers is an even worse comparison because it was a terrorist attack that a lot of still alive people lost actual family members too, which would be a lot more to reasonably be upset about. I don't imagine there's that many WWII survivers left , let alone ones that knew people on the Yamato and even less likely to be playing this video game or watching its intro scene unless you went out of your way to bother them.

Also the twin towers aren't a warship being used in the context of being in war so im less sympathetic to the situation.

I doubt the majority PSO2 players are bother by the original seal design. When the 1st PV was shown during live broadcast the audience were excited, not raged. Some anti-PSO2 jerks probably started the "fighting yamato equals anti-japan" war and people just took the bait.

Never forget sega public announced to "increase security level" for their symphony 2015 when some tard rant to "bomb the concert place"

raialeus
Mar 4, 2016, 09:22 PM
To be honest the problem isn't as big as you might have imagined.

Most of the voices of complaint didn't even come from the JP PSO2 fanbase, but rather people who don't even play PSO2. To be fair, the everyday people in Japan don't really know a whole lot about Battleships,
at least until more recently KanColle brought more light to that area...but only for the gamers/military otakus. Your average people still don't know much about Yamato except that it's a giant warship.
The JP players are more concerned about Su not being in the Opening.

This commotion is started by some bloggers that are probably paid by Sega's competitors or simply wanted to attract more blog views by attacking PSO's usage of the Imperial Seal.
But really the Imperial Seal was nothing more than an excuse, since the "Gensou Yamato"'s seal had 24 Petals instead of 16 Petals like the real thing, to avoid violating any laws that corresponds to using that particular symbol, and on top of that it's not even intended to be a Breakable part.

This isn't exactly the first time Yamato appears as an enemy in game either, in fact, Capcom made 1943, in which you would destroy all kinds of Japan Navy ships and no one critiqued that.
If anything, I think Sakai responded too quickly, he would have been fine by ignoring said complaints that doesn't really come from the majority of the PSO2 fanbase, but what's done is done.

[S]kyHawk

So, it's basically just a publicity stunt, then?
Then I guess Sakai was apologizing to please those who got offended and to get rid of whatever bad reputation they got with this issue.

I think the Summoners weren't in there because the MPA was filled.
Notice that there were 12 AIS in the scene where the ship turrets were taking aim at them. There were also 12 Arks on foot after they landed on the ice.
